- Chapter 6 - Swallow Isle (Part 1)
Yu Luo handed the kite over to Ziming.
The maids in the residence were shocked by Li Xiao’s martial arts skills they had never seen anyone capable of light-footwork before, something they’d only ever read about in fiction.
Yu Luo had only ever seen it on TV herself.
But then again, the man was the male lead the favored child of fate in this world. No matter how many villains jumped out in front of him, he always managed to deal with them ruthlessly in the end.
Whatever he did wasn’t surprising to Yu Luo.
“Since you’ve done it, I won’t go back on my word,” Yu Luo said, pulling a small bottle of Lingzhen Ointment from her sleeve. “This medicine is your reward.”
She reached out and handed it to Li Xiao.
Li Xiao glanced briefly at her fingertips.
Yu Luo was born fair-skinned, her fingers slender and soft like boneless jade, her fingertips delicate with a faint blush of pink.
Completely different from before. No trace of resemblance to who she used to be.
Yet she insisted on pretending nothing had changed.
He took the medicine from her hand. “Thank you, Miss Yu.”
Yu Luo let out a quiet sigh of relief and quickly led the maids to Swallow Isle.
Swallow Isle was surrounded by water on all sides and planted with various exotic flowers and rare herbs. Since it was now autumn, it didn’t look as lush as it had in previous months.
Yu Luo took a boat over, and the maids helped her ashore.
“The young masters and cousin should be just ahead,” one of the maids said.
Yu Luo looked around and thought this area seemed better suited for fishing than flying kites.
As she walked forward, she spotted a large, bright red butterfly kite soaring high in the sky. The weather was clear and breezy today perfect for kite flying.
The second young master of the Yu family, Yu Che, was standing close to Liu Yanran, the two of them holding the same kite string together.
The eldest son, Yu Yuan, was already engaged.
Among the Yu family’s sons, only Yu Che was still unmarried.
At first, Liu Yanran had tried to get close to Yu Yuan. After all, as the legitimate eldest son, he was the heir and would inherit the bulk of the family’s wealth.
But she later learned that the young lady Yu Yuan was engaged to had powerful connections. If Liu Yanran dared try to steal the engagement, she not only had little chance of success but might also bring trouble to herself and her family.
So she shifted her attention to Yu Che and began nurturing a closer relationship with him.
Between the two sons, Yu Yuan was steady and composed, while Yu Che was gentle and warm—both were dream matches in the eyes of many noble ladies.
Even the original Miss Yu had adored her two brothers and would constantly try to win their favor.
Yu Luo glanced at the three of them.
To be honest, these two “brothers” did have very handsome faces.
Even the movie stars Yu Luo used to like couldn’t quite compare.
But Yu Luo had no interest in trying to win them over.
She much preferred being near Madam Yu after all, Madam Yu looked exactly like her real mother.
Liu Yanran also spotted Yu Luo approaching.
Her face paled slightly, and she said to Yu Che, “Cousin, Luo is coming. Maybe she’s upset that we didn’t invite her and is here to cause a scene.”
Yu Che’s brows furrowed.
This sort of thing had happened more than once or twice.
Every time he and Yu Yuan did something with Liu Yanran and forgot to invite Miss Yu, she would throw a fit and make everyone miserable.
He was just about to speak when Yu Luo walked over.
Yu Luo said, “I heard you were flying kites here, so I thought I’d come and join the fun.”
Yu Che relaxed a little. It didn’t sound like she was here to cause trouble.
And she truly wasn’t.
She wasn’t the original Miss Yu they were two different people. Just making the effort to show up here and play the role of a harmless third wheel was already hard enough.
As for grabbing a whip and attacking people?
No, thank you. Yu Luo had zero interest in such hobbies.
As long as her identity remained hidden and no one started suspecting she was a ghost or demon who had come back from the dead, she was perfectly content.
Yu Luo let her kite fly up into the sky and found a clean spot to sit down.
Ziming began laying out pastries and tea on a nearby stone bench.
Today, the young miss was behaving herself. No yelling, no lashing out at the maids or her cousin how rare.
Ziming figured it might be because Miss Yu had suffered a blow the last time she clashed with Liu Yanran. Maybe the two young masters’ impression of her had taken a hit, so she was now keeping a low profile.
Yu Luo tugged at her kite string and looked over at the food. “What are those?”
Ziming quickly answered, “This one’s Poria Eight Treasure Cake, and that one is Milk Osmanthus Cake. Would you like to try one, Miss?”
Yu Luo had both hands busy with the kite string and couldn’t reach.
So Ziming picked up a piece of the Milk Osmanthus Cake, placed it on a clean white handkerchief, and held it up to Yu Luo’s lips.
Yu Luo cautiously took a bite.
Her eyes lit up instantly.
The pastry was soft and chewy, melting in her mouth, with a light milky flavor mingled with the scent of osmanthus. It was better than any cake she had ever tasted.
She leaned forward and took bite after bite from Ziming’s hand, finishing the whole piece.
Ziming froze in surprise.
This was the first time she’d seen the young miss eat so quietly. In the past, if she’d dared to hold food so close, Miss Yu would have scratched her hand with her long nails and snapped, “Get your filthy claws away from me.”
But today, Yu Luo calmly finished eating, her eyes soft and satisfied, lips slightly smeared with cake crumbs. She looked just like a little white fox that had sneakily eaten something sweet.
It was the first time Ziming realized how delicate and beautiful her young miss truly was—so soft and lovely, it made one’s heart ache.
“Miss, would you like another piece?”
Yu Luo replied, “I’ll have more later. This one was really good. You and Bitong can each take one and try.”
She said it so naturally that it felt out of character, so she quickly coughed and corrected herself, putting on a stern face again. “I’m only rewarding you because you’ve been obedient these past two days. If you disobey again, I’ll punish you severely.”
The threat coming from Yu Luo’s lips didn’t scare Ziming this time. Instead, it sounded… kind of cute.
“Yes, Miss,” she said.
Then she hesitated and added, “You have a bit of cake on your face. Shall I wipe it off for you?”
Yu Luo obediently leaned her face forward.
Ziming carefully wiped the crumbs from the corners of her lightly flushed lips.
Not far away, Liu Yanran was watching. Seeing Yu Luo so calm and not causing trouble as she usually did, her brows furrowed in displeasure.
Then she deliberately said, “I told Auntie long ago that I wanted a roll of brocade fabric for a dress, but who knew it would end up with Cousin Luo. Of course, Cousin Luo is stunning and more than worthy of such fine material. I’ve lost my mother and am just a guest in this household how could I possibly deserve something so nice?”
Yu Luo: “…”
This oh-so-innocent, not at all fake green tea act? It felt like it had come straight from the same womb as her stepsister and stepmother.
And of course, both Yu Che and Yu Yuan the two hopelessly clueless men ate it up completely.
