Devil or Angel (GL) - Chapter 33
When the two of them arrived home, it was already 9:30 PM. After parking the car, Yìyáng let Zhī Yǔ go in first, and only after seeing her walk into the house did she slowly follow behind and enter the door.
Aunt Liú saw them come back one after the other and just assumed it was a coincidence, not thinking much of it. She suddenly seemed to remember something, and ran over, circling Yìyáng’s body and sniffing her from side to side. Only after detecting no such odor did she let out a sigh of relief: “Thank goodness you didn’t drink!”
“Aunt Liú, you really don’t trust me, do you? I promise you, from today on, I’m quitting alcohol! Not a drop!” Yìyáng declared with a solemn pledge.
“You’ve said that no less than 100 times in the past two years. My ears are about to grow calluses. Don’t just talk a good game; you have to take action.” Aunt Liú still had a hard time believing this “cry-wolf” young lady.
“This time I’m not just making empty promises. My good friend doesn’t like me drinking, and drinking can easily lead to mistakes. So I will honor this promise. You and Zhī… will supervise me from now on. If I drink again, you can punish me by not letting me eat your delicious food, okay?” Yìyáng’s eyes were fixed on Zhī Yǔ, who was standing to the side, as she spoke.
“You have a good friend now? When did that happen? How come I don’t know?” Aunt Liú was very curious about the “good friend” she mentioned. She even suspected that Yìyáng had found another female friend or something similar. If that was the case, she had to vet her; she couldn’t let her get hurt again.
“Oh, you don’t know her. I’ll introduce you later. In any case, please believe in my determination this time! All right, it’s late. You should go to bed early too. I’m so sleepy. I have to go to work tomorrow!” Yìyáng yawned and stretched lazily, ready to head upstairs.
As she passed Zhī Yǔ, she gave her a wink. Of course, Zhī Yǔ also received her signal, and she said to Aunt Liú: “Then I’ll go up and rest too. Good night, Aunt Liú!”
With that, the two of them went upstairs one after the other. Aunt Liú watched their retreating figures and felt a strange sensation, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on what was wrong. Or maybe she needed to get a new pair of reading glasses; she had this persistent illusion that her young lady’s eyes were always fixed on Zhī Yǔ.
When the two arrived at the door of Zhī Yǔ’s room one after the other, Yìyáng held her hand, swaying it back and forth, reluctant to let go: “Woman, get some rest early, and don’t let that man touch you!”
“Yáng Yìyáng, it seems this has already exceeded your jurisdiction. Don’t forget, you’re just my friend!”
Zhī Yǔ felt a sense of helplessness at what she said. Although it was impossible for anything to happen between her and Zhāng Guódòng, from Yìyáng’s perspective, they were a couple, and intimacy was a natural consequence. This little brat was still so domineering.
“Okay, friend!” Yìyáng’s expression was clearly unhappy, but what could she do? If they were truly going to do something, she couldn’t stop them.
Just as they were talking by the door, it suddenly opened. Zhī Yǔ immediately withdrew her hand from Yìyáng’s. Zhāng Guódòng glanced at the two of them: “Zhī Yǔ, you’re back. You must be tired. Come in and get some rest! Yángyáng, you should go back to your room early too.”
Yìyáng watched as Zhāng Guódòng took Zhī Yǔ’s hand, which had just been in her own grasp, and led her into the room. She drooped her head and returned to her own room. The moment she entered, she flopped onto the bed, radiating a feeling of deep unhappiness.
At this moment, her heart was filled with an unspeakable bitterness and jealousy. Why did it have to be her own father’s woman? And she had to helplessly watch them being intimate, unable to do anything. This was undoubtedly a form of torment, a painful torture, and she was powerless.
After Zhī Yǔ entered the room, Zhāng Guódòng immediately released her hand: “I apologize for the offense! Zhī Yǔ, what were you and Yángyáng talking about outside just now? Have you two become very close recently?”
“Huh? No, she just happened to come back at the same time, and we just chatted for a few words.” Zhī Yǔ’s answer was a bit evasive.
“Oh, I see. I thought you two had grown closer, which would make it easier to persuade Yángyáng. It seems my solitary daughter is really not easy to approach. We’ll take it slowly. If there’s any progress, let me know in time.”
“Mhm, I understand! When the time is right, I will find a way to persuade her to come to the company to help.”
“That’s good! Oh, by the way, when I left work today, I saw you received a bouquet of roses. Who sent it?” Zhāng Guódòng suddenly remembered the afternoon incident and asked.
“Uh… that…” Zhī Yǔ stammered, not knowing what to say. It’s not like she could say your daughter sent them, right?
“Even if you don’t tell me, I know. It must be someone at the company who has a crush on you. This is what we’ll do: tomorrow, I’ll go to the company and announce our relationship, so they’ll give up and won’t bother you anymore.”
“Mhm, Chairman Zhāng, I’ll follow all your arrangements!”
“It’s settled then. I’ll go back now. You should wash up and get some sleep!” With that, Zhāng Guódòng pulled open the middle door and went back to his room to sleep.
But at this moment, Yìyáng had no intention of sleeping at all. Although she was lying on the bed with her thoughts racing, her ears were constantly perked up, trying to hear if there was any movement from the room diagonally across. But did she think the walls were hollow? It wasn’t that easy to hear.
In short, she couldn’t hear anything, but Yìyáng kept her eyes wide open, paying attention, just in case she heard the sound she most dreaded. She was afraid she would impulsively rush over, unable to control herself. Right now, she was conflicted and anxious.
If Zhī Yǔ also liked her, it would be simple. The two of them could elope, go to a place where no one knew them, and live a normal and happy life, no longer concerned with their identities or moral ethics. But the reality was that it was just Yìyáng’s wishful thinking, so those beautiful dreams were nothing more than fantasies.
“You rotten man. When my mom was alive, I never saw you come home so diligently; you were practically nowhere to be found. Now that you have a young and beautiful woman, you come back all the time. Men really are no good… Zhī Yǔ, Zhī Yǔ, do you really love him or not…” That’s how a certain little brat spent the entire night, muttering to herself and tossing and turning.
The next morning, as expected, Yìyáng came downstairs wearing a pair of black-rimmed glasses. When Aunt Liú saw her, she knew exactly what was wrong: “My young lady, why are you pretending to be so refined? You didn’t sleep well again last night, did you? You’re quitting alcohol, but when will you improve your sleep quality? It looks like I’ll have to go burn some incense and pray to the Bodhisattva for you this week!”
“Please, I’m not superstitious!”
“Sincerity makes it happen, you know? I will move the Bodhisattva with my sincerity.”
“Okay, then please buy some extra delicious food to show respect to the Bodhisattva for me!” Since Aunt Liú had a place to entertain herself, Yìyáng just let her be. Besides, she was doing it for her own good.
Just as Yìyáng was about to finish breakfast, Zhāng Guódòng and Zhī Yǔ came downstairs together, laughing and chatting. In a certain person’s eyes, it was as annoying as it could possibly be. Her eyes were about to catch fire.
“Yángyáng, you’re up so early today. How is your studio doing recently? I heard there were some problems with the promotional poster shoot. Your father knows a lot of modeling agency CEOs. Do you want me to help you contact them?” Zhāng Guódòng sat down and started to care about his daughter’s recent work.
“You don’t need to worry about it. I can handle it myself, thank you!” Yìyáng replied in her usual cold tone.
“All right. If there’s anything you need help with, just say the word!” Zhāng Guódòng had no choice but to say this after being snubbed.
Yìyáng quickly finished her meal, glanced at the still-eating Zhī Yǔ, then picked up her bag, ready to leave. At this point, Zhāng Guódòng stopped her: “Yángyáng, um… Liu’s car is in for repairs. I have a client meeting this morning. Would it be convenient for you to take Zhī Yǔ to work?”
“No need, I’ll take a taxi myself.” Before Yìyáng could answer, Zhī Yǔ spoke up first.
Yìyáng checked the time. She still had a little while before she had to be at work. Besides, she was the boss; it was fine if she didn’t go to the company. Then, she thought about how this woman actually refused to ride in her car. In that case, she would do the opposite of what Zhī Yǔ wanted.
So she went back and sat down in her original seat. Her meaning was very clear. Seeing this, Zhāng Guódòng smiled and whispered in Zhī Yǔ’s ear: “I’m creating an opportunity for you two to get along. You want to complete the mission and go home early, don’t you?”
Why whisper in her ear when you can talk? Yìyáng took a sip of water and placed the cup down heavily on the table: “Can the person who needs a ride hurry up? This young lady doesn’t have all day to wait!”
Zhī Yǔ was about to say “wait or not, I don’t care,” but she changed her mind when she remembered Zhāng Guódòng’s words. She swallowed the words that were about to come out. In this house that was not her own, she could only hold back her anger.
Under a certain person’s impatient urging, Zhī Yǔ quickly finished her meal. She wiped her mouth, picked up her bag, and walked out without even glancing at the little brat.
Yìyáng had been spacing out, but when she came to, the woman was already outside. She quickly put on her backpack and rushed out. Seeing the person ahead, she immediately changed her expression, and a servile, attentive look took over as she insisted on taking her bag.
“My lady, you don’t have to bother. I can carry it myself!” Zhī Yǔ said, annoyed.
“Hehe, you’re already having a hard time walking in those high heels. I’m afraid you’ll get tired. Let me do this heavy work,” Yìyáng said with a subservient smile, flattering her.
“Fine, whatever you want!” After glancing at a certain person’s car, which was about 500 meters ahead, Zhī Yǔ helplessly let her take her bag. Since she liked carrying it so much, she could carry it to her heart’s content.
Yìyáng talked nonstop all the way, not allowing Zhī Yǔ a moment’s rest. This little brat was usually so cold and unapproachable. When did she become so talkative? Zhī Yǔ wished she could just tape her mouth shut.
