Did Mrs. Sheng Got Divorced Today? - Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Hidden
A large, well-defined hand stretched out from the gray duvet and pressed the alarm clock at the precise moment before it rang.
The piercing sound never had the chance to echo.
Seeing the woman beneath the blanket continuing to sleep soundly, Sheng Pingzhou turned the alarm clock facedown on the table, got up, and entered the bathroom.
The sound of running water filled the air.
Su Wanwu laid in bed with her eyes closed. She was only pretending to be asleep.
She only opened her eyes when she heard the bedroom door softly close. Emerging from the blankets, she let out a quiet sigh.
The sound of a car engine started downstairs and gradually faded into the distance. Su Wanwu hesitated for a moment, then got out of bed and walked to the balcony, watching as Sheng Pingzhou’s car disappeared down the road.
Only when the black Cullinan was completely out of sight did she touch her forehead, feeling a chilling emptiness deep inside.
Yesterday, they had quarreled—an argument that was rare between them. Even by bedtime, they were still holding something against each other.
Su Wanwu was always the first to compromise. Before they went to sleep, she tugged at his sleeve. “Before you leave for work tomorrow, can you give me a good morning kiss on the forehead?”
Perhaps Sheng Pingzhou was still upset. He hadn’t given her a definite response, only turning away to switch off the lights. “Go to sleep.”
And today, as expected, he hadn’t done it.
To Su Wanwu, this meant that her attempt at reconciliation had been ruthlessly ignored.
She was still wearing last night’s silk nightgown. Autumn had arrived, and a sudden chill swept through the air.
Rubbing at the goosebumps on her arms, she lingered on the balcony for a few more minutes before finally turning back inside to change and head to the film set.
******
The rain in Ling City always came without warning.
In the fine drizzle, Su Wanwu watched through the camera lens as the lead actress shed delicate, tear-streaked sorrow.
She found herself lost in thought—not because of the silent treatment from Sheng Pingzhou, but because after this scene, the filming would officially wrap up.
She and Sheng Pingzhou had been married for less than a year, but his mother, Mrs. Sheng, had already hinted, both openly and discreetly, that she wanted Su Wanwu to give up her career as a director and return to a traditional family role.
“I’m not against you working, but the entertainment industry isn’t exactly the right place for you…”
“Besides, Pingzhou manages so many companies. If you stay this busy, when will you two ever have time to nurture your relationship?”
“…”
Conversations like these had gone on for hundreds or thousands of times. So often, that she could even recite them in her sleep..
Let alone, the point Mrs. Sheng’s trying to make wasn’t for them to nurture their relationship, but actually urging them to have children.
They had been married for less than a year, and already, the pressure from her mother-in-law was already overwhelming.
“CUT!”
The assistant director called the scene before her, removed the headset, and nudged Su Wanwu. “Director Su, is something wrong?”
Su Wanwu snapped back to reality and looked at the footage on the monitor..
The lead actress had completed her final scene—dressed in a flowing red gown, curled up in the artificial snow, a single line of bl00d-red tears trailing down her cheek.
The last frame froze.
The End.
Su Wanwu picked up her walkie-talkie. “One more take. I need more complexity in the lead’s expression…”
She threw herself back into work, momentarily setting aside her personal troubles.
The set buzzed back to life. Crew members hurried to their positions—some creating artificial snow, others adjusting lighting, and others clearing disturbances from the frame.
Once the lead actress was ready, Su Wanwu called out, “Action!”
This time, everything clicked. She was fully immersed, and the actress seemed to enter a deeper state of performance. From the very first second, she took everyone’s breath away with her performance..
Finally, the last shot was complete. The assistant director let out a relieved sigh.
Su Wanwu, being satisfied with the shot, called it a wrap.
The lead actress rose from the artificial snow, dusted off her costume, and ran over. “Director Su! Director Su!”
Her voice was urgent. After reaching Su Wanwu’s side, she peered at the monitor. Her eyes still streaked with crimson tears. “Is there anything I need to improve?”
“No, that was excellent. You really found the emotion this time.”
Su Wanwu stepped aside to let her review her own performance. As she analyzed the scene, she commented, “This final expression is perfect. No sense of force, and your body language was much more natural…”
This was a low-budget web drama. The actress, Tang Mian, was a D-list celebrity—if she could even be called that. She was an influencer, who had gone viral on social media platforms for some time and was still a university student, using her summer break to shoot this drama before heading back to school.
She and Su Wanwu got along well.
Even though the project was just another over-the-top period melodrama, with barely enough funding, and the lead’s “luxurious” red gown looked like a cheap rental from a photography studio, they were both exceptionally dedicated.
Tang Mian wasn’t formally trained. She attended an ordinary university, became an influencer due to her looks, and landed this role purely by chance.
Or rather—her low fees fit Su Wanwu’s tight budget.
“Director Su, I really think our show has a shot at success!” Tang Mian said earnestly.
Su Wanwu smiled. “Anything is possible.”
But this ‘possible’ sounded rather unconvincing.
Tang Mian met her gaze seriously. “I’m not just flattering you, Director Su. If this drama takes off and I become a big star, I swear I’ll come back and take another one of your roles!”
Su Wanwu raised a brow. “For free?”
Tang Mian grinned. “Well… maybe not entirely for free.”
Su Wanwu chuckled, perhaps picked it off Tang Mian’s bubbliness, and shook her head. “After the next film, I’m retiring from the industry. Who knows if there will be another chance?”
Her gaze drifted into the distance. She took a sip from her thermos.
“Director Su, We’ll take our leave!”
There were constantly people coming over to say goodbye. The assistant director also came over hurriedly and spoke with her cheeks blushing. “Director Su, I might need to take an early leave. My boyfriend is coming over to pick me up…”
Su Wanwu saw the blush on her cheek, and let out a “tsk.” and waved her hand. “Get the hell out with my blessings then.”
The assistant director thanked her nonstop and left happily.
Su Wanwu was quite easy going, plus this is a small set, so all the workers here are all familiar with each other.
Tang Mian had removed her makeup and put on her casual clothes. She walked over to Su Wanwu before leaving. “Director Su, is your husband not going to pick you up?”
Not a lot of people knew that Su Wanwu was married. She and Sheng Pingzhou didn’t hold a big ceremony, but those who follow her will definitely know.
She shook her head, but before she spoke, Tang Mian let out a squeal, “Oh my! Isn’t that Chairman Sheng? Director Su, your husband came to pick you up!”
She winked at Su Wanwu, and her tone filled with teasing.
Su Wanwu followed her sight and saw a familiar figure walking over from a distance,
She was stunned for a second, “he’s not…”
“Hehe, don’t be shy, director Su.” Tang Mian squinted her eyes as she smiled. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”
With that, he hurried off as if she didn’t want to interrupt the love birds from interacting.
Su Wanwu watched her leave with a wry smile on her face. As she turned, the man was already standing behind her.
“Ma’am”
Wei Hanyu stood respectfully before her.
“Chairman Sheng asked me to pick you up.”
He was Sheng Pingzhou’s assistant, responsible for handling various matters, big and small.
Sheng Pingzhou had never been to her film set before, but he had sent Wei Hanyu on several occasions. For quite a few times, Tang Mian had bumped into him and mistakenly assumed he was Su Wanwu’s husband.
Su Wanwu never had the chance to explain before Tang Mian would “sensibly” scurry away.
“It’s raining. Mr. Sheng said to take you directly to the family residence to wait for him.”
As soon as Su Wanwu got in the car, Wei Hanyu arranged the itinerary.
She had originally been resting with her eyes closed, but upon hearing this, she opened them. “…The family residence?”
Was she going to visit her mother-in-law again?
Wei Hanyu nodded. “Madam Sheng just called Mr. Sheng and asked him to go back for dinner tonight. His father will be there as well, so they hope you and Mr. Sheng can return early.”
“What about Sheng Pingzhou?”
“Chairman Sheng still has a meeting to attend to. Since it’s raining, he asked me to take you to the family residence first.”
Su Wanwu pouted, “Can’t he and I go together?”
Upon hearing this, Wei Hanyu glanced at her. “Chairman Sheng is probably afraid that you would be bored at the office.”
Su Wanwu retorted right away, “Get me there to be bored then.”
Wei Hanyu couldn’t help but smile, “Yes, ma’am.”
Su Wanwu diverted her glance and stared out the window.
Compared to being bored, talking with Mrs. Sheng was more terrifying.
If Sheng Pingzhou was with her, he could still reject some of his mother’s demands, even though there wasn’t much use in that.
She sighed lightly.
It was already tiresome to try to please a person, even more tiresome to try and please many people all at once.
*******
At Shengshi Corp.
Su Wanwu took the private elevator and entered the CEO’s office.
Sheng Pingzhou was still in a meeting, so she casually sat on the guest sofa in his office and scrolled through her phone nonchalantly.
“Ma’am, Chairman Sheng probably still needs an hour, feel free to tell me if you need anything.”
“…an hour?” Su Wanwu thought about it for a second, and took out a pile of scripts from her bag. “Just tend to your work then. I’ll just stay here and read the scripts. Don’t mind me.”
“Got it, ma’am. Then please just call me if you need anything.”
Wei Hanyu turned and left the room while closing the door lightly behind him.
Su Wanwu moved her eyes away from the door and focused on the script she had got in her hands.
She planned on only filming one more drama before completely leaving the industry. Therefore, she had to be extremely careful with what script she chooses.
All the scripts here are the ones she picked out from the studio that was deemed as promising. She took one randomly and started to read through it, slowly losing herself in the story.
Time slowly passed…
Her neck was getting stiff from the reading. Su Wanwu let out a yawn, and instinctively stretched——
“Haaa…”
Just as she looked up from the script, she saw the man walking into the office at that exact moment.
Their eyes met.
The corners of Su Wanwu’s eyes were still teary from the drowsiness. Her expression turned rigid.
In the next second, she quickly controlled her expression, and pushed the pile of scripts before her towards the other side of the table.
“You’re back?”
She stood up, and walked up to him with a smile on her face. “Is the work tiring today?”
Sheng Pingzhou was dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, exuding a cold and indifferent aura that commanded respect just through his prescence. His gaze briefly swept over her, and he slightly parted his lips, saying, “mhm.”
Su Wanwu had grown accustomed to his distant and cold demeanor when he was outside, so she wasn’t upset by his way of talking. However, when she saw the woman behind him, her steps halted———
“Why is she…”
She bit her lips and looked at Sheng Pingzhou.
Anger fired up in her eyes, but she still tried her best to suppress it.
This woman was the reason for their fight last night, and they still hadn’t reconciled since.
But she didn’t want to continue the fight, nor continue the silent treatment, so she could only try to let her voice sound as calm as she could.
“Why is she here?”
