Did Mrs. Sheng Got Divorced Today? - Chapter 2
Sheng Pingzhou took a few steps forward before hearing Su Wanwu’s words.
Upon hearing her, he looked toward the woman at the door. “Yuan Ke?”
It was unclear whether he was asking Su Wanwu or calling out to Yuan Ke.
Yuan Ke adjusted her skirt, acting somewhat awkward. “Chairman Sheng, do I need to step aside?”
She glanced at Su Wanwu, her eyes shifting, and then smiled generously at her.
Su Wanwu avoided her gaze, choosing to look at Sheng Pingzhou instead. “How come she’s here?”
Sheng Pingzhou slightly furrowed his brows, seeming displeased with her question. “She works at the company, of course she’s here.”
Su Wanwu immediately shut her mouth.
She realized she had made him upset. It was as if last night all over again:
she found out yesterday that Yuan Ke worked at his company, and couldn’t help but ask him about it.
At first, Sheng Pingzhou didn’t give any reactions. Even up until now she could not understand what she had said wrong that caused his attitude to suddenly grow cold last night.
And then, it was the inexplicable silent treatment.
Sheng Pingzhou didn’t notice her weird expression. He turned to Yuan Ke. “Wei Hanyu has prepared clothes for you. Change within ten minutes, then go to the family residence.”
“Understood, Chairman Sheng.”
Yuan Ke nodded lightly. Before leaving, she looked at Su Wanwu, said nothing, and just smiled before closing the door behind her.
The office was left with just the two of them.
Seeing that Sheng Pingzhou had already sat down as if nothing happened, opened his laptop, and was flipping through some documents, the feeling of helplessness inside her only grew stronger.
She walked over to him and stood still.
Feeling a shadow looming over the desk, the man slightly raised his head but didn’t look at her. “Is there something else you would like to say?”
Su Wanwu took a deep breath, trying to keep her tone calm. “Is Yuan Ke also going to the family residence?”
Perhaps because he had entered his work mode, Sheng Pingzhou’s attitude toward her was still calm, but not as cold as yesterday. “Mom asked me to take her with us.”
Su Wanwu’s face became somewhat unpleasant. “Wasn’t today supposed to be a family banquet?”
The reason she didn’t get along with Yuan Ke was because Madam Sheng had an excessive fondness for her, even more so than for Su Wanwu, the daughter-in-law.
When she interacted with Madam Sheng, she often felt marginalized.
And she wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but she always felt that Yuan Ke didn’t approve of her, yet was overly approving of her husband.
It was only some time after her marriage did she find out that originally, Madam Sheng had planned to matchmake Yuan Ke with Sheng Pingzhou.
But by some twist of fate, she, the outsider, ended up getting the marriage.
Sheng Pingzhou’s hand paused for a moment, and his gaze lifted, landing on her face. “She’s mom’s goddaughter.”
His words were simple, almost like a reminder.
Su Wanwu lowered her head even more, her clenched fist loosening weakly. “I understand.”
She walked off to the side without waiting for his reply, and sat down to wait for him to finish his work so they could leave together.
Sheng Pingzhou looked over again, seeming to realize that something was off with her. “Are you feeling unwell?”
He looked out the window. The rain still hadn’t stopped.
Originally, he had planned for Su Wanwu to go directly to the family residence, but because of the weather, he had asked Wei Hanyu to pick her up. He hadn’t expected her to come to the office to wait for him.
Thinking of this, he stood up, walked over to Su Wanwu, and reached out to touch her hair. “You…”
Su Wanwu was still hanging her head low when she suddenly felt a burst of warmth. She leaned into it almost instinctively.
She thought Sheng Pingzhou was trying to make amends, so she looked up at him, her eyes sparkling.
Sheng Pingzhou touched her forehead again. “You’re not wet.”
It seemed he hadn’t noticed the look in her eyes, and only when he withdrew his hand did their gazes meet.
He saw the clarity and attachment in her eyes, and was momentarily stunned.
Su Wanwu awkwardly turned her gaze away, not expecting that he was only checking if she had gotten wet in the rain. She had thought…
Seeing her avoid his gaze, Sheng Pingzhou also withdrew his attention. “You’re not wet, but do you feel unwell anywhere else?”
Su Wanwu shook her head. “I’m fine. I just…”
She pursed her lips, thinking for a moment. “Should I change clothes too?”
Sheng Pingzhou seemed to understand something, his expression thoughtful.
His gaze was incredibly intense, the kind of gaze that could instantly see through someone’s intentions in the business world and then take control of the situation.
Su Wanwu didn’t like it when he looked at her with that same gaze. She whispered, “Earlier, Yuan Ke also…”
“That was arranged by Mom. You don’t need to worry about it,” Sheng Pingzhou interrupted, scanning her outfit from head to toe. “You’re fine just like this.”
Upon hearing this, Su Wanwu lowered her head to inspect her attire.
She was used to wearing casual, comfortable clothes. This morning, the temperature dropped, so she casually chose a khaki trench coat, paired with a white T-shirt and jeans underneath.
From a typical style perspective, it was classic and pleasant to the eye.
But…
“Chairman Sheng, I’m ready.”
A sweet female voice rang out from the doorway, and as Su Wanwu looked up, she saw Yuan Ke standing there in elegant attire, looking as though she were about to attend a banquet.
Su Wanwu: “…”
Sheng Pingzhou stood up. “Let’s go.”
Watching his silhouette, Su Wanwu said nothing but followed behind.
******
At the family residence.
The black limousine slowly drove through the gates.
Su Wanwu sat next to Sheng Pingzhou. The man was always dressed in formal attire—his suit perfectly tailored, enhancing his tall and strong frame. The stiff fabric further emphasized his commanding presence, giving off an aura of strong pressure.
He looked at ease, as men’s suits typically only differed in price and quality; as long as the fabric and workmanship were good, they all looked similar.
Su Wanwu, however, was different.
When they got out of the car, she could feel the driver’s gaze on her and Yuan Ke.
Yuan Ke looked like she was here for a banquet, while she looked like she was just taking a stroll.
Su Wanwu had thought it was just a simple meal today.
But when they entered the gates, she immediately realized that the event was much grander than she had imagined.
“Pingzhou is back!”
Someone in the crowd called out, and the noise of the crowd quieted down.
Madam Sheng, who had been the center of attention, elegantly walked toward them holding a champagne glass. “You’ve arrived?”
She was older, with visible traces of time on her face, but also exuding the elegance and composure that only time could bring.
“Xia Bin said you had an important meeting today. I thought you wouldn’t make it on time.”
“So many people?” Sheng Pingzhou scanned the crowd with a detached look.
Madam Sheng explained, “It was originally just a family dinner, but your uncle and the others said it’s been a while since they gathered. And since you’ve recently taken over the Western Suburb project, it seemed like a good opportunity to discuss it…”
Sheng Pingzhou frowned. He could tell what was really going on just from hearing it.
“Mom, don’t interfere with work matters, and don’t make decisions on your own.”
Madam Sheng’s smile faded slightly, and she turned to Su Wanwu. “…Why did you come dressed like this?”
The sudden change in topic caught Su Wanwu off guard. She had been observing from the side, and now the focus was suddenly on her. She froze for a moment. “I…”
She bit her lip nervously. “I didn’t know…”
Facing an elder, she always unconsciously tried to please them.
She was used to doing this at home, let alone outside.
Despite all her inner turmoil, she would always keep it hidden, so that on the surface, she would never offend anyone.
“Sorry, I’ll go change…”
“Take this.”
A deep voice interrupted her, and a coat was immediately handed to her.
Su Wanwu paused, looking at the arm extended toward her. Beneath the white shirt, she could faintly see the muscle lines, containing a dormant yet immense strength.
She awkwardly reached out to take it, the crisp scent of men’s suits filled her nostrils.
Just a hint—neither too heavy nor too light.
Sheng Pingzhou casually tossed the coat to her and said slowly, “Take the coat and wait for me in our room.”
As he adjusted his cuffs, he walked behind her, his broad chest pressing against her back. “Don’t come out again.”
The air in the banquet hall seemed stagnant.
Su Wanwu originally felt a bit suffocated, but upon hearing his words, she was able to breathe a little easier.
Thank goodness…
She held the coat and glanced at Madam Sheng.
Madam Sheng was looking at her. Her expression was less than pleasant, a mix of irritation and helplessness.
“Pingzhou, If she goes back to your room, who’s going to accompany me to greet those uncles and relatives?”
No matter how much Madam Sheng criticized Su Wanwu, she couldn’t deny that in some aspects, the girl was quite likable.
She was obedient, especially to elders. Everyone in their circle knew she was a well-behaved girl.
Though the Su family’s development had slowed down over the years, they still didn’t cut corners when it came to raising their children.
Their eldest daughter from the Su family, Su Nongshuang, was decisive and outstanding in ability, while the youngest daughter, Su Wanwu, was obedient and thoughtful in every way.
In those setting that requires socializing, Su Wanwu always managed to handle things well.
At the previous family banquets, Madam Sheng had taken her around, offering toasts and charming all the relatives from the Sheng family.
Su Wanwu may not have been particularly capable, but she was skilled at reading the room and making others feel at ease.
Madam Sheng had initially planned to bring her along to handle the difficult relatives.
Sheng Pingzhou also felt a bit stifled and casually unbuttoned his collar. “Don’t you have a goddaughter?”
He smiled after watching Madam Sheng’s expression suddenly stiffen. “I suppose you’re reluctant to send her out to smile and flatter everyone?”
Yuan Ke lowered her head, not daring to speak a word.
She had been somewhat arrogant in front of Su Wanwu earlier, but Sheng Pingzhou’s few words had quickly deflated her confidence.
Seeing that no one was speaking, Sheng Pingzhou casually draped his arm over Su Wanwu’s shoulder. “Quite a coincidence, I’m reluctant too.”
He patted her slender lower back, tilted his chin slightly, and whispered in her ear, “I told you to go wait in our room.”
“Okay.” Su Wanwu nodded.
She held his coat and glanced at Madam Sheng.
Sure enough, Madam Sheng was only glaring at Sheng Pingzhou with some irritation and didn’t bother with her anymore.
Su Wanwu instantly sighed with relief and swiftly left the scene.
As soon as she stepped out of everyone’s sight, she felt all the tension leave her body, and let out a heavy sigh.
How annoying—why does she have to be so scared of elders?
She was even afraid of her own mom, let alone someone else’s.
But still, Sheng Pingzhou had been quite considerate just now. By pulling this stunt, he had placed her in a position of a doormat who had no choice but to obey.
Madam Sheng could say whatever she wanted, but in the end, she had no reason to scold her. At most, she could only scold Sheng Pingzhou for ordering her to leave.
Thinking of this, she snapped out of her train of thought and looked at the man under the dazzling lights, so handsome to the point where it was almost blinding. She couldn’t help but nod in agreement to him. “At least you’re sensible, you assh0le…”
Right that moment—
Sheng Pingzhou happened to glance her way.
Su Wanwu immediately clamped her mouth shut.
Oh no, she remembered that Sheng Pingzhou is skilled at lip reading…
