Did Mrs. Sheng Got Divorced Today? - Chapter 6.2
Unable to suppress her curiosity, she whispered to Wei Hanyu, “Does it make a big difference which group they apply through? Or does Group A have better benefits?”
Wei Hanyu shook his head, also puzzled. “Not really. The benefits are nearly the same. The only real difference is that fresh graduates in Group A get the chance to be personally overseen by Chairman Sheng during their interviews. Otherwise, there’s little distinction.”
Even he couldn’t understand why Shu Mi had lied.
Shu Mi had never experienced such a moment of humiliation.
The weight of countless stares crushed her, their judgment burning into her skin.
Mocking her.
Disdaining her.
Especially with Sheng Pingzhou standing right in front of her…
Tears slipped down her cheeks before she could stop them. She could endure the misunderstanding from everyone else, but not from him.
“Chairman Sheng,” her voice wavered, “I wasn’t lying… I only applied to Group A because… I wanted to see you.”
Shu Mi had no choice but to tell the truth. Her nose was flushed red, and her voice carried a deep sense of bitterness. “I had no reason to lie. There isn’t much difference between the A and B groups, is there? Isn’t the purpose of recruitment to assess a person’s abilities and performance? I wasn’t trying to deceive anyone for personal gain. I just wanted to see you, that’s all…”
The situation had grown more complicated.
Su Wanwu, who had been blending into the background, now found herself under scrutiny. She could feel the weight of glances shifting in her direction.
“So this girl is here for Chairman Sheng, huh?”
“But isn’t Chairman Sheng already married?”
“I heard Mrs. Sheng was here today. I saw Assistant Wei escorting a stunning young lady into his office with the utmost respect…”
“…Wait, don’t tell me that unfamiliar beauty by Assistant Wei’s side is actually Mrs. Sheng?”
“Pretty sure that’s her! I was wondering where this new hire came from…”
“…”
Su Wanwu didn’t know how to react.
Suddenly, she felt incredibly self-conscious. No matter how she stood, she couldn’t find a comfortable posture.
She didn’t know whether she should speak up to clarify her identity or if it would be better to slip away from this mess with as much grace as possible.
Instead, she could only offer a gentle nod, responding to the curious gazes with a polite smile.
Then, a shadow fell over her.
A hand casually lifted her chin, and as Su Wanwu instinctively tilted her head upward, she found herself staring into a pair of sharp, unreadable eyes.
At some point, Sheng Pingzhou had walked right up to her. His large hand rested on the back of her head.
“Let’s go.”
Before she could fully process what was happening, she was already following his lead.
Like a marionette on invisible strings, she moved as he directed, leaving the room behind.
The silence was deafening.
Wei Hanyu was the first to recover, turning to the onlookers. “That was Chairman Sheng’s wife.”
Not that the clarification was needed. Sheng Pingzhou’s actions had already made that abundantly clear.
He shifted his attention back to Shu Mi, who stood frozen in place, her lips slightly parted in disbelief as she watched Sheng Pingzhou walk away with Su Wanwu.
She could feel her tears threatening to drop from her eyes.
A sharp ache surged through her chest.
She had worked so hard, poured years of effort into inching closer to him, and finally, finally, she had the chance to meet him in person—
Only to find out that he was already married.
Her heart clenched painfully, as if something precious had been stolen from her.
“I…”
She opened her mouth, but no words came out.
Wei Hanyu, ever perceptive, caught the emotions flickering across her face and added, “Miss Shu, Chairman Sheng is a married man. For everyone’s sake, I advise you not to take any actions that might cause unnecessary trouble.”
His words jolted her back to reality. She quickly wiped her tears away. “I-I’m sorry…” she stammered. “That wasn’t my intention…”
She wanted to explain herself, but what was the point? The damage was done.
“I deeply apologize for any inconvenience I’ve caused Chairman Sheng,” she said, lowering her head. “I’ll make sure to apologize to him personally. I regret taking up everyone’s time today. I’m truly sorry.”
She took a deep breath, then nodded resolutely. “I accept the results of the interview. Thank you, Assistant Wei, for your explanation.”
Wei Hanyu, seeing her composed attitude, chose not to press further. “You may leave with the other interviewees.”
—
Inside the elevator.
Su Wanwu stole a glance at the man beside her, then quickly looked away.
She thought she had been subtle.
Yet a few seconds later—
“Elevators have reflective surfaces.”
Sheng Pingzhou’s voice was indifferent as he gazed at her reflection in the polished steel walls. “I can see you.”
Su Wanwu stiffend.
She let out an awkward chuckle, scratching the tip of her nose in embarrassment.
Sheng Pingzhou glanced at his watch. “It’s past one. Why haven’t you eaten yet?”
Su Wanwu responded matter-of-factly, “I was waiting for you. I wanted to have lunch together.”
He paused, his eyes flickering toward her.
“You’re not hungry?”
She shook her head. “You skipped breakfast. If I don’t watch you eat, I’m afraid you’ll forget about lunch too…”
Her gaze dropped to her shoes.
The numbers on the elevator panel flicker as they descend.
Sheng Pingzhou reached out, gently pinching the back of her neck. “If you have questions, just ask. Don’t bottle them up.”
