Disappointing Teleportation Magic ~ Even Though The Movement Distance Is Only 1 Millimeter, I Will Rise Through Ingenuity ~ - Chapter 30.2
※ Kawamoto’s perspective
“Halt! Are you one of the summoned soldiers? Where are your comrades?”
“We got separated along the way, so I prioritized subjugation.”
“I see, did you secure the area ahead?”
“Yes, I went all the way to the uppermost part, burned down all the buildings along the way, and took care of the residents.”
“Alone?”
“Yes, it was easy to deal with mere farmers.”
“I see, good work. Return and rejoin your unit.”
“Yes, sir!”
They would likely be securing the areas we had subjugated, but I wondered if just twenty soldiers could patrol such a large area… As I thought this, I encountered another group of Yurefelt soldiers. With this many men, they could certainly secure and patrol the area, which reassured me, but at the same time, I couldn’t help but think they should have deployed this many from the start.
In contrast to the triumphant Yurefelt soldiers heading to patrol the occupied territory, my classmates at the gathering point were enveloped in a gloomy atmosphere.
“Kawamoto, you’re alive… that’s a relief.”
“I was so panicked, I ran all the way upstream. But, man, it’s dark here… how many people died?”
“Three men and four women.”
“Seriously? That many?”
“The men were Nishio, Todaka, and Muranishi. The women were Shimoda, Watanabe, Sanjo, and… Ochiai.”
“But, weren’t they just farmers?”
“No, they attacked us from behind later on.”
“What… what do you mean?”
According to Oshima, after I dashed upstream, Fulmelinta soldiers attacked from behind. We apparently crushed them by pincering them with the Yurefelt soldiers who followed us, but it seems we were caught off guard and suffered casualties.
“Hey, Oshima, got anything to eat?”
“You sure can think about food in this situation.”
“Well, if I don’t eat, my body won’t hold up. If my physical and mental state aren’t in top shape, I can’t use magic properly.”
“Yeah, but still…”
“We’ve come this far, we might as well go all out. Otherwise, we might end up dead too. Nishio and the others wouldn’t want that.”
“Yeah, you’re right…”
The others who found me also welcomed me, relieved that I was alive. Apparently, no one saw me blow up Nishio along with the Fulmelinta soldiers with my magic during the assault.
Together with Oshima, who hadn’t eaten yet either, I filled my stomach with hardtack-like rations and dried sausage. Normally, I wouldn’t find them tasty, but that day, with my hunger and the relief of stress, they tasted exceptionally good.
“Oshima, what’s next?”
“They said we’re to secure the area up to the bridge over the river.”
I had intended to ask where we’d be able to unleash our magic next, but Oshima’s answer was ambiguous.
“Aren’t we going to attack beyond that?”
“I don’t know, but wouldn’t it be better if we didn’t?”
“Why?”
“Because if we attack, we’ll probably be sent in first again.”
“Doesn’t matter to me. I’ll just kill them all again.”
The excitement, exhilaration, and sense of fulfillment I felt from breaking through the checkpoint and running upstream flooded back. I wanted to do it again. Forget about morals, taboos, and all that tedious stuff—I just wanted to go wild.
“Idiot, if we get sent in next time, the opponents won’t be farmers but soldiers. We can’t kill them one-sidedly; we might get killed ourselves.”
“Bring it on. If I die, I die. Living a meaningless life in this shtty situation is pointless.”
“You can’t say that. If you survive and achieve results, they said you’d be given proper treatment, right?”
“This treatment? How many people do you think have died already?”
“Well… that might be true, but like Umino, Kikui, Hasunuma, and Kirikaze…”
“Don’t mention that bastard’s name! I’ll kill you!”
