Disappointing Teleportation Magic ~ Even Though The Movement Distance Is Only 1 Millimeter, I Will Rise Through Ingenuity ~ - Chapter 4.1
My assignment to the decorator’s workshop improved my conditions once again. Ekkels-san provided me with work clothes and shoes.
Though it’s rare, sometimes royalty visits the workshop, so they can’t have us looking shabby. If the general work clothes I wore before were cheap, no-name items, the decorator’s work clothes were like high-end brand items.
The fabric felt nice, and more importantly, they were easy to move in. Despite still living and eating at the general workers’ dormitory, my two-year-older colleague Tarik was quite envious.
“Wow, the quality of this fabric is completely different. I wish I could wear work clothes like these.”
“They’re comfortable, but I feel out of place in the decorator’s workshop.”
“In that regard, it’s more relaxed here.”
“Right?”
Though I said that, the truth is the decorator’s workshop was very comfortable. With tea breaks in the morning and afternoon and light snacks at lunch, it was quite the pleasant environment, but I didn’t tell Tarik that to avoid making him jealous.
“By the way, one of your classmates has gone out on a mission.”
“Seriously?”
“Yeah, they headed to the Heger Forest, which is about a three- or four-day journey one way. They’re supposed to do training there for about five days before returning.”
“Where do you get such information?”
“I do cleaning for the knights’ building. Plus, your classmates stand out, so there are rumors everywhere.”
“I see…”
According to that schedule, they’d return in about eleven days at the earliest. It’s only been about a month since we were brought to this world; could they really be ready to fight?
I felt a bit uneasy, but since the workshop I worked at was under the second queen’s faction, I didn’t hear any rumors about my classmates, who were aligned with the first queen’s faction.
“If you hear any more news about my classmates, could you let me know?”
“Sure, no problem.”
“By the way, what kind of place is the Heger Forest?”
“I don’t know much since I’ve never been there, but I’ve heard it’s used for new recruit training and beginner adventurers gathering materials.”
“So, there aren’t any dangerous monsters?”
“I’m not sure, but I don’t think there are any particularly dangerous creatures.”
“I see…”
“We’d better get going before the boss starts yelling at us again.”
“I should get going too…”
Parting ways with Tarik in front of the dormitory, I headed towards the decorator’s workshop. The truth is, work hadn’t started yet at the decorator’s workshop.
If the general workers’ division was like a black company, the decorator’s division was like an excellent white company. The workshop had guards checking in and out, and I presented the temporary ID Ekkels-san gave me to enter.
No other workers had arrived yet, so I could concentrate on my work alone; this time was precious. Currently, I am cleaning a small landscape painting rather than the large portrait.
This painting was also old, with dust and soot on its surface. It seemed that soot from candles and oil lamps used in the castle had accumulated on it.
Since it was a mixture of oil and particles, it had a similar composition to the paint. Thus, determining the boundary between the paint and the dirt was difficult.
If I didn’t correctly identify the boundary, the dirt wouldn’t come off completely, or I might end up removing some paint. Not knowing how many practice paintings I could ruin, I concentrated my magic on a one-centimeter square area at a time to detect the boundary and then used teleportation magic.
“Teleport… Yeah, I’m getting the hang of this.”
Areas smoothed with a knife or spatula were simpler, but spots with brush marks required intense concentration.
