Disappointing Teleportation Magic ~ Even Though The Movement Distance Is Only 1 Millimeter, I Will Rise Through Ingenuity ~ - Chapter 5.3
“That’s a method people here wouldn’t think of.”
“Probably. Maybe you could try a different approach too.”
“What do you mean?”
“I can’t think of something specific right now, but if you combine your knowledge of modern medicine with healing magic, they might want to keep you in the castle instead of sending you to the battlefield.”
“That’s a great idea! Medicine here is likely behind compared to Japan. If I think about internal organs and cells, I might come up with amazing magic. Yes, I’ll try that.”
“And, I can’t say this loudly, but have you heard about the succession dispute?”
“What’s that? I haven’t heard.”
I shared what I knew about the royal succession struggle, based on what the foreman had told me.
“That’s ridiculous!”
“Shh, keep your voice down.”
“Sorry, but now that you mention it, the few times I’ve seen the second prince, his demeanor was definitely off.”
“Maybe they’re keeping him away because of his bad behavior?”
“Hmm… Not sure. The first princess rarely shows up either.”
According to Umino-san, Princess Aurelia only appeared at the ceremony before a deployment and never during regular training.
“Is it like they summoned us as tools, and now they’re only interested in our achievements?”
“Probably. Wow, I feel even more like I should get away from the front lines.”
“You really should, and the sooner the better. Don’t worry about pride or appearances, just beg on your knees if you have to and get out of there.”
“Right. Hey, can you keep sharing information with me?”
“Sure, but how do we stay in touch?”
“Well, it’s not good for you to come over, so I’ll come to you.”
“Okay, I’ll tell you where the general duties dormitory is.”
I told Umino-san where the general duties dormitory and my room were.
“If you’re not there, I’ll leave a note wedged in the door.”
“Wait, wouldn’t it be bad if someone read it?”
“It’s fine. I’ll write it in Japanese, so they won’t understand.”
“Oh, that’s smart. Let’s do that.”
“Alright, I’ll get going then.”
“Yeah, see you…”
I was relieved that instead of being criticized, we had a positive conversation. At the same time, I resolved to avoid Kawamoto at all costs.
I returned to my room in the dormitory and lay down on my bed.
Last night, I was deeply shaken after hearing the tragic news from Tarik about my classmates, but talking with Umino-san had eased my mind a bit.
“Oh, I forgot to ask who the victims were… or maybe she intentionally didn’t say.”
I tried to recall Ikeda’s face, the only one I knew had been lost.
The only memory I had was of him being noisy with Kawamoto.
When I was kicked out of the dormitory, he was standing next to Kawamoto, grinning.
I don’t feel as bad as I thought I would, hearing he was a casualty. I didn’t wish him ill, but it didn’t hurt much either.
“Let’s sleep… I have work tonight.”
I pushed thoughts of Ikeda out of my mind and drifted off to sleep.
