Disappointing Teleportation Magic ~ Even Though The Movement Distance Is Only 1 Millimeter, I Will Rise Through Ingenuity ~ - Chapter 6.1
I often visit the decoration workshop, even after finishing the cleaning of the portraits. The main reason is for the afternoon tea and snacks, but I also enjoy watching the work being done there.
While cleaning the portraits, Klassen-san, who was working in the adjacent space, also asked me to help with cleaning corroded metal. Klassen-san specializes in armor restoration and always has a calm demeanor.
Everyone working in the decoration workshop is calm and composed. Unlike the general duties office or the kitchen, there is never any shouting. When I mentioned how surprised I was by this, Klassen-san explained the reason.
“The work done here is delicate and many tasks are unforgiving of mistakes. You can’t do such work with a hot temper. Keeping a calm mind is very important here.”
Everyone in the workshop quietly proceeds with their tasks, using their specialized knowledge and sometimes seeking advice from one another. The atmosphere in the workshop was very comfortable for me.
“How is it going, Yuto? Are you able to remove it well?”
“Setting the boundary is quite difficult.”
Cleaning the corroded parts of the armor that Klassen-san requested was extremely challenging. The corroded parts are the oxidized metal of the armor, but distinguishing between the oxidized and non-oxidized parts is difficult.
When performing cleaning using transfer magic, it is necessary to set a boundary between the dirt to be transferred and the object it is attached to. I have no theoretical understanding of how I can recognize this boundary, but it is probably part of my ability as a user of transfer magic.
When I focus on the object, a cross-sectional view of it appears in my mind, and I set the boundary by drawing a line. The more similar the properties of the dirt and the object, the harder it is to set the boundary.
Currently, I am practicing with a corroded coin. According to Klassen-san, small parts can be cleaned by soaking them in a solution, but disassembling and reassembling an entire armor set requires a tremendous amount of effort.
Of course, historically valuable items are painstakingly restored, but it’s not feasible to disassemble and restore everything, so they want to have various methods ready depending on the degree of corrosion. This kind of thinking seems to be common among those restoring other items as well.
“Hey, Yuto, can you remove stains like this?”
Halmire-san, a petite and slender woman in her forties, is in charge of dress restoration. Her bluish-silver hair seems to be natural rather than dyed.
“Stains on fabric… If the fabric isn’t dyed, I think I can do it, but dyed fabrics and patterns would require practice.”
“As you can see, this fabric is undyed, but give it a try.”
“Alright. Transfer!”
“Wow…”
At the tea table, I used transfer magic to remove the stain from a handkerchief-sized piece of fabric Halmire-san handed me. Everyone around the table exclaimed in amazement as the old stain on the fabric disappeared completely.
“Yuto, come here for a moment.”
Seeing that not a single drop of the stain remained, Halmire-san pulled me into the workshop. Curious, the others also stood up and followed.
“Yuto, can you remove this stain?”
“Is this a wedding dress?”
“Yes, I want to remove this large stain if possible.”
The chest of the pure white dress, which seemed to be a wedding gown, had a faint purple stain. It looked like someone had already tried to remove the stain, but it still lingered.
“This fabric isn’t dyed either, right?”
“Yes, it’s made from the finest spider silk.”
Spider silk was also a topic of interest in Japan, but I suspect that the spiders in this world are not the size I am familiar with. The spider silk had a wonderful texture and shine, and the undamaged parts gleamed with a pure white brilliance, making the stain even more conspicuous.
“I’ll give it a try…”
When I focused, I realized that the spider silk was made of much finer fibers than the previous fabric, and the stain had been trapped between them. Still, since the spider silk and the stain were completely different substances, it was relatively easy to select the boundary.
“Transfer!”
Even though the stain moved only one millimeter, it was more than enough to remove it from the fabric.
Seeing the dress regain its pure white brilliance with just one application of transfer magic, Halmire-san gasped and was left speechless.
“This… this is amazing, Yuto! Look at it, it’s as beautiful as if it were just made.”
Not only Halmire-san, but the other workers and Eckels-san, who was present, also praised my work.
“Wonderful, Yuto. This is the wedding attire of the Second Queen, Charlene. It had that stain because of the carelessness of the First Queen, Clarissa. This is marvelous; you’ve removed a royal grudge.”
“I-I’m glad I could help,” I replied, though there was an underlying tension in Eckels-san’s voice.
