Disappointing Teleportation Magic ~ Even Though The Movement Distance Is Only 1 Millimeter, I Will Rise Through Ingenuity ~ - Chapter 9.1
Wearing an entirely orange outfit was quite uncomfortable at first, but once I got over it, I could walk through the city without feeling self-conscious.
In fact, since most people in the city were dressed entirely in blue or yellow, I didn’t stand out at all.
This city, with its castle, is called Escrode. It has existed since before the establishment of the current Yurefelt Kingdom and is known as an oasis on the trade routes.
Even today, it is a key junction on the highways connecting east and west, with many caravans passing through Escrode, filling the city with goods. From the southeastern road came dried seafood and salt, from the south came rice, from the north came mineral resources, and from the west came woolen fabrics and cheese.
The area where Tariq took me to get clothes is where the local residents of Escrode live. As you move away from that area, you start to see people dressed in more than just one primary color.
People wore various traditional clothes, such as shirts with red embroidery on natural fabric, short shirts with wide belts, or fur vests, depending on their ethnic background.
“I want to try on other traditional clothes too.”
“What are you talking about, Yuto? If you wear other ethnic clothes, they won’t let you into the castle.”
“Huh? But I have my ID.”
“No way. Everyone takes pride in their own traditional clothes, so wearing other outfits means you are becoming a citizen of that nation.”
“Seriously? I guess I can’t return to my original world, so I have to become a citizen of this country.”
“Then, there’s no problem with your current clothes. If you want to be fashionable, focus on the buttons.”
“Buttons? Oh, Tariq, your buttons look cool.”
“Right? These are made from orc tusks.”
The ivory buttons, slightly oval in shape, had intricate carvings on them.
“The price varies depending on the material and intricacy of the work. Want to take a look?”
“Yeah, I want to see them.”
The button shop Tariq took me to had buttons packed everywhere, as expected.
There were buttons themed around the sun, moon, and stars, as well as those representing fire, wind, and water magic, and animals like lions, wolves, and snakes.
Men’s buttons were larger, and women’s buttons were slightly smaller. The buttonhole sizes for men and women were standardized, so I could use men’s buttons on my current clothes.
My newly bought clothes had plain wooden buttons. Clothes were sold with simple buttons, and people could later replace them with ones they liked.
Button prices varied widely, with the wooden buttons on my new clothes costing three fal, but the more expensive ones could cost over a hundred fal. The price difference was due to the button material and the intricacy of the work.
Expensive buttons were carved from orc tusks or natural stones, requiring a lot of effort to make.
“Which one do you want, Yuto?”
“Hmm… there are so many to choose from. Oh, this one looks interesting.”
“Let’s see… oh, the shape is interesting, but the finish is rough.”
The moon-themed button had a large circle with a half-diameter hole representing a crescent moon. The surface had a pattern that looked like scattered stardust, seemingly made by casting, but the mold must have been rough as it had burrs and crushed patterns.
Compared to similar buttons, it was about a quarter of the price. The store clerk said I could choose whatever I liked, so I picked a relatively well-made one.
“Yuto, you have money, so why not choose something else?”
“I have an idea.”
“Well, as long as you like it… Oh, make sure to buy an extra one in case you lose it. They might be sold out next time.”
“Oh, I see…”
The store could sew on the buttons immediately if you paid a little extra.
I’m not good at sewing, so I had the lady at the shop attach the buttons for me. However, she had a somewhat skeptical expression on her face.
