Disappointing Teleportation Magic ~ Even Though The Movement Distance Is Only 1 Millimeter, I Will Rise Through Ingenuity ~ - Chapter 34.1
When the wyvern migration was detected, a notice was issued to the town below the castle, advising residents to refrain from unnecessary outings. However, since the last occurrence was a hundred years ago, some people did not feel the sense of urgency.
Would they really come? And even if they did, would it matter to them?
Once one person starts disregarding the rules, others begin to think, “If they’re not following it, why should I inconvenience myself?” This seems to be a common phenomenon everywhere.
Additionally, despite the notice, the wyverns did not appear for two days.
Even though they were warned that the wyverns could appear at any moment and to stay indoors, some people began to think the warning was a mistake or that the wyverns wouldn’t come to their area when they didn’t see any sign of them after waiting for so long.
As a result, when the wyverns finally appeared, many people were out and about in the town.
Animals that hunt from high altitudes have very keen eyesight. Wyverns are also known to have excellent vision, and it seemed they had been carefully observing the town’s people from above.
Then, when the wyvern descended and destroyed the castle’s bell tower, people panicked and fled indoors, leading the wyverns to associate buildings with potential prey.
The wyverns made the castle grounds their nest and began descending into the town, destroying houses and abducting residents.
In hindsight, if the town had been deserted when the wyverns appeared, they might have just flown away without stopping at the castle.
There was an abundance of easy prey, a convenient high perch, and warehouse-like caves suitable for nesting.
Now, the royal capital had become the perfect living environment for the wyverns.
Given the situation, if we don’t take decisive action to remove the wyverns, the Kingdom of Yurefelt will not be able to sustain itself.
The wyvern extermination operation was planned as a blitzkrieg by a select few elite members of the Royal Guard. Somehow, I was chosen for this mission, although I am still not entirely convinced. However, I had negotiated with the king, so now I have no choice but to go through with it.
The deal was that if I achieved significant results in the wyvern extermination operation, or if I died, my classmates would be released from combat duties. Several of them had already lost their lives in the war against Fulmelinta, and those caught in the wyvern migration were now unaccounted for. If they were still alive, all would be freed from combat duties as promised.
Honestly, participating in this extermination is terrifying. Facing a ferocious carnivorous dragon over twice my height seems like madness.
Still, Radin, known as the King’s Shield, will be guarding me, so I will boldly charge into the wyvern’s domain and use all my magic. If I can inflict a fatal wound on even one of the three wyverns, the deal will be fulfilled.
The king has ensured that this agreement is acknowledged by the faction of the second prince, so there is no backing out now.
“Phew…”
“Yuto-sama, can’t you sleep?”
“Yeah, it’s embarrassing to admit, but I can’t stop shaking…”
With the operation just hours away, I was advised to get some rest, but I couldn’t sleep at all.
The image of the wyverns feeding during the day haunted me, and imagining myself being eaten next made me tremble.
I pressed my forehead against the rough earthen wall, closed my eyes, and hugged myself tightly to stop the shaking, but it was barely effective.
At that moment, the blanket I was using was pulled away, and a soft warmth enveloped my back.
“Yuto-sama, your body is so cold.”
“Araseli, could you hold me like this until it’s time?”
“Yes, gladly…”
As a man, I felt the roles should be reversed, but for now, I wanted to be enveloped in Araseli’s warmth.
Somehow, I managed to sleep until Araseli woke me up past midnight.
Though it was a short sleep, I felt surprisingly clear-headed.
Since I didn’t have custom armor, I finished preparing by wearing a breastplate, backplate, gauntlets, greaves, and a steel helmet.
Araseli was also clad in similar armor as mine.
Initially, I was the only one participating in the operation, but Araseli insisted on joining.
To compensate for the short range of my magic, I needed to get close to the wyverns. In that situation, I wouldn’t be able to pay attention to my surroundings.
I planned a reckless, all-or-nothing attack, but Araseli opposed it, offering to take charge of situational judgment instead. By leaving the decision to advance or retreat to Araseli, I could focus solely on casting severing transfer magic.
I didn’t want to drag Araseli into such a dangerous situation, but when she said she would die with me, I couldn’t refuse.
“Let’s go, Araseli.”
“Yes, Yuto-sama. We’ll die together if we must…”
“No, let’s share the honor of slaying the wyvern together.”
“Yes…”
