Disappointing Teleportation Magic ~ Even Though The Movement Distance Is Only 1 Millimeter, I Will Rise Through Ingenuity ~ - Chapter 38.1
After yesterday’s battle with the wyverns, I saw the sunlight for the first time in a while, but I spent the rest of the time underground again. Whether it was due to that or accumulated fatigue, my sense of time was off.
“Lord Yuto, it’s time to get ready…”
“Mm, mm… Is it time already?”
“Yes, you asked to be woken up a bit early…”
“That’s right… Ugh.”
“Are you alright, Lord Yuto?”
“I-I’m fine… I think it’s within expectations.”
Woken up by Araseli, I tried to get out of bed, but a sharp pain ran through my side.
It’s the price I paid for being saved by Radin’s tackle when I was about to be eaten by a wyvern yesterday.
Even small movements send pain throughout my body. I had asked to be woken up early to force my body to move and get used to the pain.
During training with Mauroni, when he said, “If you have time to say it hurts, move,” I thought it was unreasonable, but now I fully understood why.
The place we’re heading to now is a battlefield where you could easily lose your life if you flinch from pain.
With Araseli’s help, I got dressed and put on my full set of armor. Seeing the scratches on the armor brought back memories of yesterday’s battle.
Yesterday morning, the knights gathered in the underground hall all had determined expressions, but none of us expected the plan to fall apart right from the start, nor did we think we wouldn’t make it back alive.
The team that suffered the most was Emelian and his group, who were part of the second prince Belnort’s royal guard.
Out of the four, only one survived, and even that one barely escaped with his life and was left traumatized, making him unusable.
In today’s operation, Belnort’s guards are supposed to act as a diversion.
Speaking of which, during last night’s dinner, when I asked Radin why he had a bad feeling before the subjugation, he mentioned that Emelian’s armor creaked every time he walked.
Metal armor is often imagined to make clanking noises when you walk, but well-maintained ones make hardly any noise.
Radin felt that Emelian’s armor wasn’t well-maintained, which gave him a bad feeling.
It’s not clear if the wyvern woke up because of the armor’s noise, but the fact remains that Emelian is no longer in this world.
When I finished getting ready and went to the hall, Mauroni and the others were already gathered.
It was still not the scheduled time, but it seemed I was the last one to arrive.
“Sorry for being late.”
“No problem, it’s not yet the scheduled time,” Mauroni said, and Saed and the others nodded in agreement.
Saed then spread out the castle’s blueprint and began explaining the morning’s attack plan.
“This morning, our target is the wyvern that has made its nest on the east side of the castle.”
Four wyverns have made nests in three locations.
Two are together in the ballroom near the center of the castle, one is in the entrance hall, and another one is in the music room on the east side of the castle.
The east side of the castle is controlled by the second prince’s faction, but for this subjugation, factional matters are irrelevant.
When the nation’s survival is at stake, there’s no room for factional disputes.
“We will ascend these stairs and proceed through this corridor to reach the room adjacent to the music room.”
On the castle’s blueprint, the wyvern’s location was marked in red ink, and the route to get there was indicated.
“We will wait by the wall, and when I give the signal, prepare to cast your spells. When we get word from the lookout that the wyvern has awakened, launch an attack through the wall and then retreat immediately.”
“Should we not confirm the effectiveness?”
“Unfortunately, this place is where the music room staff stay. For a wyvern that can crush the walls of a warehouse, these walls are nothing but thin boards.”
The idea that attacking through the wall would allow us to hit the target safely was naive. In reality, the wyvern had smashed the outer walls and floors of the castle to make its nest.
The wall might hide me, but it was not enough to serve as a protective shield.
“So, after launching the attack, we retreat without confirming the result?”
“Yes, we leave the room, proceed through the corridor, and retreat to this point. The observers will assess the effectiveness, and if the wyvern is severely wounded, Mauroni and I will finish it off. Yuto, you will stay with Radin.”
After launching the attack through the wall, we would retreat to a place where we couldn’t be found, even if the wall was destroyed. The soldiers observing the situation would judge the extent of the injuries and inform us if the subjugation was possible.
If the wyvern was critically injured, Mauroni and Saed would finish it off together. The other knights and soldiers would distract the remaining three wyverns to keep them away from the one being subjugated.
This strategy was based on the assumption that wyverns would help their comrades in danger.
“Now, let’s go. First, we take down one, and everyone returns alive. Understood!”
Saed raised his right fist, and everyone participating in the operation followed suit. Yesterday, the three teams moved through the same corridor, but today we would take separate routes.
