Divorcee O Finds Me Irresistible - Chapter 15
As midnight approached, a barbecue stall was still open downstairs in the neighborhood. The young man behind the grill waved skewers, sprinkling them with cumin and chili powder. The rising smoke carried a mouthwatering aroma.
About a dozen outdoor tables were set up in front of the stall. Besides Xu Qing and Fu Shuang, a few other young people were enjoying late-night skewers and beer, mostly men, with hardly any Omegas in sight.
While Xu Qing and Fu Shuang were ordering at the counter, a group of drunk men whistled at them. Fu Shuang, startled, nervously gripped Xu Qing’s arm. Xu Qing glared fiercely at the men.
Halfway through ordering, Xu Qing asked Fu Shuang, “Should we just take it upstairs to eat?”
Fu Shuang replied stubbornly, “The weather’s so nice. It’d be a shame not to eat here. Besides, there are plenty of empty tables. We shouldn’t let them ruin our mood.”
Fu Shuang, ever the strong-willed one, nearly wanted to slap the whistlers across the face. But with Xu Qing beside her, she had to feign a frightened demeanor.
There was no way she’d back down and leave.
“The weather is perfect tonight,” Xu Qing said, looking up at the full moon peeking behind the tall buildings. The night sky was clear and cloudless, a deep, serene blue, and the temperature was comfortably mild—ideal for enjoying skewers outdoors. She glanced at Fu Shuang with an appreciative gaze and said reassuringly, “Don’t worry, just pick a spot. With me here, there’s nothing to be afraid of.”
Fu Shuang hummed in agreement and chose a seat neither too close nor too far from the other table. As she pulled out the chair, she looked at Xu Qing with a questioning glance: Is this okay?
Xu Qing nodded, then produced a pack of wet wipes from seemingly nowhere and handed them to her. “Here, wipe down the table.”
“Did you bring these from home?” Fu Shuang asked, surprised. She took a wipe and cleaned the chair first, then the table. “No wonder everyone says it’s best to marry a Female Alpha. Women are just better at taking care of people than men.”
Xu Qing chuckled, deliberately teasing, “Well, that depends on personal preference, doesn’t it? If your preference is for men, then marrying a Female Alpha wouldn’t help much.”
Fu Shuang leaned in like a rabbit, twitching her nose and whispering, “To be honest, I’ve hated men since I was little. They’re dirty, smelly, stupid, and clumsy…”
The rabbit honestly confessed her preferences.
Xu Qing’s heart bloomed with joy, but her expression remained calm as she poured a cup of orange soda into a disposable cup for Fu Shuang.
Fu Shuang took a sip, intending to casually ask about Xu Qing’s preferences. However, seeing Xu Qing’s enigmatic demeanor, Fu Shuang suddenly felt less confident.
A beautiful and charismatic Female Alpha like her could like any type of person, not necessarily an Omega, Fu Shuang thought.
After careful consideration, Fu Shuang recalled that she always reacted strongly to her older sister’s pheromones. But had her older sister ever reacted to hers?
As far as she could tell, the answer was no.
Realizing this made it even harder for Fu Shuang to ask Xu Qing about her orientation. What if it turned out to be completely different from what she imagined?
Fu Shuang suddenly felt a pang of melancholy. Xu Qing clinked her cup against Fu Shuang’s and smiled. “Congratulations on your big win today. When you strike it rich, don’t forget to treat me to a meal.”
Even during the toast, Xu Qing kept her cup lower than Fu Shuang’s.
Feeling cared for, Fu Shuang’s heart suddenly grew sentimental. She chuckled softly and said, “I’ll take your good luck.”
“Of course,” Xu Qing said. “You’re beautiful, incredibly capable, and relentlessly determined. If you don’t get rich, who will?”
These words made the little money-grubber Fu Shuang feel like she was floating on air. She didn’t even bother with false modesty, blinking her eyes and asking, “Older Sister, do you really think so?”
Her soft, adorable yet proud demeanor made Xu Qing want to ruffle her hair.
“I’d be a dog if I were lying,” Xu Qing replied.
Fu Shuang straightened her back noticeably at Xu Qing’s acknowledgment.
Just recently, everyone around her had been urging her to “stop making trouble.” Even her closest friends had opposed her running away from home. In their eyes, Omegas were merely appendages of elite Alpha society, incapable of true independence.
But Xu Qing recognized her worth, showering her with high praise.
If Fu Shuang had a tail, it would be wagging furiously right now. Xu Qing seized the opportunity to ask, “So, I’m genuinely curious—how exactly did you manage to get the compensation today?”
Fu Shuang took a dainty sip of her orange juice, deliberately teasing her. With a saccharine smile, she feigned naivety and said, “I’m just so pretty. The kid’s parents got dizzy from hearing me talk and transferred the money right away.”
“Wow, you’re truly gifted!” Xu Qing exclaimed dramatically. “Someday you should open a law firm, and claimants from all over the world will be lining up to wire you money. You’ll be rich in no time!”
Fu Shuang laughed heartily, clutching her stomach. Just then, the restaurant’s young waiter arrived with freshly grilled skewers and two bottles of coconut juice. Fu Shuang looked puzzled. “When did we order coconut juice? Is this complimentary?”
The waiter smiled. “No, we don’t offer free drinks.”
Fu Shuang glanced at Xu Qing, who noticed the group at the table behind them settling their bill. When Xu Qing’s gaze met theirs, the boy paying the bill lowered his head and gave a shy wave.
“The customers over there are treating you,” the waiter explained with a smile. “He said his friend was rude earlier and wanted to apologize.”
Without turning around, Fu Shuang replied coldly, “If he wants to apologize, he should come say it himself. Who cares about this?”
Xu Qing paused, surprised by Fu Shuang’s reaction. Seeing the situation, the waiter took back the drinks and returned to relay the message to the other group. Defeated in their attempt to strike up a conversation with the attractive women, the group left dejectedly.
“Annoying creeps!” Fu Shuang muttered, but when she met Xu Qing’s eyes, her expression instantly shifted to a bright, cheerful smile. “Older Sister, do you want some beer?”
“Do you want a drink?” Xu Qing asked.
“I don’t drink, but if you want some, I’ll grab a few bottles for you.”
“Drinking alone isn’t much fun,” Xu Qing smiled. “These are enough.”
“That kid usually lives with his grandparents,” Fu Shuang said, picking up a skewer of grilled meat. “He’s notorious for causing trouble at school. The old couple is loaded, but they’re as tightfisted as can be—they wouldn’t pay a cent in compensation.” She continued sharing her evening’s ordeal with Xu Qing: “I told them I’d report the incident to the school and notify the kid’s parents. There’d be a school-wide parent-teacher conference where they’d be publicly criticized. The traffic police would also use the case as a cautionary example in their public awareness campaigns. Their child would never get into a good high school, and their son and daughter-in-law would definitely question their parenting abilities. If it happened once, it’ll happen again. They’re lucky their kid wasn’t hurt this time, but my friend suffered significant losses.”
“After two hours of relentless persuasion, the old couple finally agreed to pay compensation.”
As Fu Shuang spoke, Xu Qing had already peeled a grilled shrimp. She placed the intact shrimp meat on Fu Shuang’s plate like an offering, saying earnestly, “Teacher Lulu, I have a personal matter I’d like to ask your advice on.”
