Divorcee O Finds Me Irresistible - Chapter 27
The next day, Xu Qing continued to drive Fu Shuang to work, arriving about ten minutes late, just as they had the previous day. This time, however, no one was waiting for them outside the office door, and the day proceeded as smoothly as usual.
Having promised to make up for her girlfriend’s missed birthday, Xu Qing was determined to create a truly special occasion. She planned to research the city’s most recommended restaurants online and order a birthday cake.
After completing her research, Xu Qing stared blankly at the computer screen, wondering:
Am I dreaming?
Do I really have a girlfriend?
No matter how she looked at it, it all felt surreal. Just a short while ago, Xu Qing had been agonizing over the arranged marriage her family had planned for her. Now, she had a genuine girlfriend?
Xu Qing’s heart raced with excitement. This major life event was still a secret, and it felt… stifling.
After 26 years of being single, she was eager to share the good news. She cradled her coffee mug and pondered who she could tell, but no one came to mind.
Her social media was filled with relatives, work colleagues, long-lost classmates, and strangers who frequently posted. None of these people mattered enough to Xu Qing, nor did they feel like the right audience for her joy.
If Madam Min saw Xu Qing’s new girlfriend on WeChat, would she explode with anger again? Xu Qing didn’t want her joyous occasion to turn into a funeral.
She logged into a social media platform she used frequently abroad on her personal laptop and posted a text status: “Brand-new live!”
Then, with nothing else to do, she scrolled through the updates of friends she hadn’t contacted in ages, paying particular attention to her older sister Xu Yuan’s profile.
Xu Yuan’s username was Wish. She uploaded photos and videos every few days to document her life. In one post, a little girl with deep-set eyes chased after a newborn foal in a farmyard, asking the person filming in a babyish voice, “Mommy, can I ride it?”
The voice that followed made Xu Qing’s heart skip a beat.
Xu Yuan’s voice sounded remarkably similar to Xu Qing’s, but her older sister’s tone was slightly deeper and her words carried more conviction. She replied indulgently to the four-year-old girl, “No, you can’t. You’ll have to wait until you’re older to learn how to ride a horse.”
The girl puffed out her cheeks in anger, planted her hands on her hips, and declared, “Hmph! I don’t believe you! You’re a meanie! I want to grow up right now!”
In the video, Xu Yuan teased the little girl and threw what looked like a piece of horse dung at her, shouting, “Come on, catch me first!”
The girl screamed and charged after Xu Yuan. The video also captured the sounds of others speaking Thai, their cheerful atmosphere infectious enough to make Xu Qing smile at the screen.
Xu Qing continued scrolling through Wish’s updates, browsing photos of her family life. She almost clicked the “like” button several times but restrained herself. After so many years of no contact, it was best to maintain their distance.
Still, Xu Qing couldn’t help but feel genuinely happy for her older sister.
As the workday neared its end, Xu Qing pulled out her laptop again to slack off. She noticed two new updates on the social media site:
One was a “like” from Wish.
The other was a comment from Wish: “Hey kiddo, long time no see! How’ve you been?”
After a moment’s thought, Xu Qing replied, “The revolution isn’t over yet. Still working hard!”
Staring blankly at the screen for a few seconds, Wish replied, “That’s the spirit! If you need anything, come find me. I’ll be waiting for you at the farm in Thailand.”
Xu Qing couldn’t help but laugh. She returned to Wish’s profile and liked all the family photos. Under the first video—the one where Wish threw horse dung at her daughter—Xu Qing commented, “Hey, that’s bullying! Auntie’s gonna help you get revenge!”
Soon after, Wish replied, “Hahahahahaha.”
Xu Qing was about to sneak in some more idle time before heading out to pick up her girlfriend after work when she received a call from a headhunter. They were informing her about a multinational corporation nearby that was hiring architectural designers.
Life’s turning points often arrive unexpectedly.
Even Fu Shuang noticed Xu Qing’s unusually good mood that day and begged to go to the nearby park to see the pigeons. Xu Qing readily agreed.
Now that they were in a relationship, they should be going on dates, taking leisurely walks, and wasting time on meaningless things!
A vendor selling fried tofu skewers stood near the park entrance. Fu Shuang, acting as if she’d never seen such a thing before, excitedly tugged Xu Qing over.
“I’ve never tried this before! Is it good?! Let’s have this for dinner tonight!”
Fu Shuang’s smug expression made it seem like she’d made a brilliant decision.
However, Xu Qing could tell from the smell that the vendor was using low-quality oil that hadn’t been changed in ages, with a hint of rancidity. The tofu skewers themselves were clearly made from inferior ingredients, and the sauce slathered on them after frying reeked of Hex flavor enhancers.
Seeing Fu Shuang’s expectant face, Xu Qing frowned and said, “It’s not clean.”
“Huh?” Fu Shuang looked confused and shocked. “Have you tried it before?”
It’s just a roadside stall, nothing special. Why haven’t you ever tried it?
Maybe her Omega girlfriend was raised under strict rules.
Xu Qing felt a pang of sympathy. She glanced at the stall owner, a meticulous woman dressed in clean clothes. Perhaps her sense of smell had dulled with age, preventing her from noticing the issue.
Oh well, Xu Qing thought. If the kid wants it, what can I do?
Holding Fu Shuang’s hand, Xu Qing lowered her voice. “You can buy one skewer to try, but don’t eat too much. It might upset your stomach.”
Fu Shuang happily paid for a skewer, her eyes gleaming with anticipation as she stared at the steaming tofu. “My coworkers saw the bento you made for lunch today,” she said to Xu Qing. “They all said it smelled amazing—way better than their takeout. Some even joked that I should make extra portions for them next time.”
Xu Qing raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t get into an argument with them, did you?”
Fu Shuang shot her a slightly reproachful look. “Older Sister, do you really think I’m that kind of person?”
Xu Qing stroked her chin. “Hard to say. With your temper, you probably snapped back, right?”
“I didn’t. I just told them my girlfriend made the bento,” Fu Shuang said with a smug grin.
Xu Qing’s heart fluttered slightly. Imagining her Omega girlfriend showing off about her at work, she couldn’t help but smile.
Xu Qing longed to show off her adorable girlfriend everywhere, but with nowhere to do so, she felt a bit stifled.
“Really?” Xu Qing said, feigning composure. “That’s a good reason, I suppose. But your colleagues must be disappointed to hear that the beautiful new coworker isn’t single. There must be a lot of broken hearts.”
“Who knows? Maybe,” Fu Shuang said smugly. “Those people always act so high and mighty. Even if they wanted to pursue me, they’d play hard to get. In their eyes, an Omega working for a living must be pathetic. They’d never lower themselves to actively pursue me.”
Xu Qing’s upturned lips flattened. Thank goodness I asked her out yesterday, she thought resentfully. Otherwise, in my girlfriend’s eyes, how would I be any different from those people too proud to pursue her?
Xu Qing had only wanted to spend more time creating better conditions for their relationship.
Feeling inwardly ashamed but outwardly composed, she agreed with Fu Shuang: “Those people are disgusting.”
“Exactly!” Fu Shuang puffed out her cheeks, looking genuinely annoyed. “They found it strange that my Alpha cooks for me at home. I’m just an intern, not earning any money. How could I possibly be taking advantage of my Alpha?”
Xu Qing’s anger flared instantly. “Why even bother with people like that?”
Then it dawned on her—her girlfriend was interning at a major corporation. Wow, that’s impressive.
She had assumed Fu Shuang was working as a cashier at a bubble tea shop or supermarket. After all, there weren’t many jobs available for someone her age and with her level of education.
“Because we see each other all the time, and different departments often interact. I can’t just start yelling at him,” Fu Shuang said, her smile tinged with worldly wisdom. “That’s just how things are. People have long been conditioned to the ABO hierarchy. They think Omegas should stay home, quietly serve Alphas, and let them earn the money to support the family. I didn’t argue with them—it’s pointless. Let them think whatever they want, right, Older Sister?”
She stood too close to the tofu skewer stall, the acrid smoke drifting indiscriminately toward her, tainting even her smile with the vulgarity of societal norms. It was a jarring sight, like a sudden thorn piercing Xu Qing’s heart, spoiling her mood.
“Come closer,” Xu Qing said, tugging Fu Shuang by the wrist and pulling her into her arms. She wrapped her arms around Fu Shuang from behind, gently stroked her hair, and murmured soothingly, “Your work environment sounds awful. If you have to deal with such trashy colleagues every day, even the most passionate spirit would be worn down. Why don’t you take some time off and look for a new job?”
Fu Shuang’s mood visibly brightened. She let out a snort of amusement. “Honestly, it’s just jealousy. They all wanted to chase after me but missed their chance, so now they spread rumors and talk behind my back. The more they try to bring me down, the more I’ll live proudly and defiantly! Let those slimy, backstabbing creeps rot in hell!”
“That’s my girl!” Xu Qing couldn’t resist leaning down to kiss the top of Fu Shuang’s head. “I love seeing you so spirited and fearless.”
The kiss landed on Fu Shuang’s warm hair, sending a strange sensation through her scalp. Even Xu Qing could feel Fu Shuang’s body stiffen. Realizing her sudden boldness, Xu Qing awkwardly released her girlfriend, feeling flustered by her own impulsiveness.
“Your tofu skewers are ready!” the old woman at the stall said with a smile, turning to Fu Shuang. “Young lady, would you like chili sauce, scallions, and cilantro?”
Fu Shuang, her back to Xu Qing, froze like a malfunctioning machine, unable to speak clearly. Xu Qing gently interjected, “Just a little chili sauce, no scallions, but yes to cilantro.”
“Alright!” The old woman sprinkled the seasonings and handed over the paper bag with a relatively clean hand.
Fu Shuang and Xu Qing reached for the bag at the same time, their hands brushing. Both nearly recoiled, but the old woman held on firmly, preventing the tofu skewers they’d waited so long for from falling to the ground.
Xu Qing couldn’t help but laugh first, easing the awkwardness. Fu Shuang made a silly face at her, a faint blush still lingering on her cheeks.
“Let’s go see the pigeons,” Xu Qing said, taking the tofu skewers and wrapping her other arm around her girlfriend.
Fu Shuang murmured a soft “Mm-hmm,” leaning into Xu Qing’s embrace, still adjusting to this unfamiliar closeness.
Habit is merely a process—the process of growing close to another person, of letting your souls touch.
Fu Shuang quickly composed herself, resting her head on Xu Qing’s shoulder with a relaxed smile.
