Divorcee O Finds Me Irresistible - Chapter 33
After a rainstorm, the temperature in Shengyuan City plummeted. Just last week, people were riding around in short-sleeved T-shirts, but this week, they were practically reaching for their down jackets to ward off the cold.
Xu Qing frowned as she surveyed her girlfriend’s wardrobe, which contained only a few thin shirts. Her thickest garment was a single blazer meant for the transition between late summer and early autumn, utterly inadequate for temperatures nearing single digits.
Wearing that on the back of a motorcycle would freeze her to death, Xu Qing thought. She didn’t want her girlfriend to develop a negative association with her beloved motorcycle.
“Why don’t you wear my clothes to work today?” Xu Qing suggested, pulling out a patterned sweater from her college days and a fleece-lined jacket with a lapel collar. Though the style was outdated, warmth was its saving grace.
“So tacky!” Fu Shuang’s face twisted in disdain at first sight of the clothes. “It looks like something from the last century…”
Xu Qing had never cared much about fashion. Now focused on maintaining her figure, she could make any shirt look good. But back in her school days, things had been different.
From childhood, Xu Qing had never lacked clothes. Her elder sister and Madam Min always bought her new outfits. However, their tastes were… questionable. Madam Min favored a flamboyant, Hong Kong-style look from the last century, pairing bright red sweaters with jeans. Sister Yuan, on the other hand, leaned towards a Western cowboy aesthetic, accumulating ripped jeans one after another, accessorized with everything from wristbands and gloves to high-necked scarves. Under their influence, Xu Qing’s style during her school years was a chaotic mess, severely diminishing her youthful charm.
Later, these worn clothes piled up basket after basket. The Xu family stored several boxes in each of their multiple properties in Sheng Yuan, which is why Xu Qing could now pull out some winter clothes on short notice.
“I used to have no fashion sense at all—I looked like a Mat,” Xu Qing admitted frankly, rubbing her nose. “All my clothes were bought by my mom and sister. Just look at this sweater to see their taste. But the quality is good—it’s thick and has shrunk a bit, so it should fit you well. Go ahead and change.”
Fu Shuang’s hazel eyes narrowed slightly, and she smiled. “No, thank you.”
Xu Qing was surprised. She hadn’t expected to disagree with her girlfriend on this. In her view, she had offered the perfect solution: the sweater might be a bit ugly, but it was just for one day. Why couldn’t she just wear it?
“I don’t understand. Why don’t you want it?” Xu Qing asked, holding the sweater with a serious expression. “You don’t have any other clothes. You’ll freeze to death if you go out without it.”
Fu Shuang’s face scrunched up in a deep frown, as if her entire being recoiled at the thought. Perhaps due to her innate resilience, she could tolerate poor food and harsh conditions, but when it came to aesthetics, she had impossibly high standards. Forcing her to wear that gaudy, bright red sweater with its tacky floral print—it was practically a death sentence!
“I’ll take a taxi. The office has air conditioning,” Fu Shuang said, her lips pressed into a thin line. “I’m not wearing your clothes. I’d rather die than wear that.”
Xu Qing was stunned. She hugged the sweater and sniffed it. Though it carried a faint woody scent from being stored in a chest, it was clean overall, with a lingering fragrance of laundry detergent. She remembered the sweater was made of cashmere, incredibly soft to the touch. How could it be… so utterly despised, to the point of life-or-death aversion?
Her lips parted, but she remained silent for a long moment, as if she had already foreseen a terrifying future.
Their past two weeks together had been remarkably smooth, so smooth that Xu Qing had begun to believe their lives would always be this simple, easy, and mutually fulfilling.
But this harmony was built on the absence of disagreement. Now that a conflict had arisen, Xu Qing didn’t even know how to persuade her.
Overwhelmed by a sense of defeat, she stood frozen in place, holding the garment and softly saying, “It’s really cold outside.”
Fu Shuang was on the verge of tears, her hands clasped together trembling like a sieve, her voice shaking with desperation. “Older Sister, please have mercy! I really don’t want to wear that ugly thing. It’s not about you—I just can’t stand that outfit. I’m begging you, please don’t make me wear it. I can’t face anyone like this, waaaah!”
Xu Qing’s expression turned cold, completely unmoved by Fu Shuang’s tantrum and pleas. “What if I insist you wear it?”
Tears welled in Fu Shuang’s eyes as she despairingly picked up the garment.
Before leaving, Xu Qing meticulously checked Fu Shuang from head to toe, ensuring she was completely covered. Only then did she get on her bike and ride her to the company building.
Wrapped up like a dumpling, Fu Shuang rushed straight to the restroom to change out of the outfit without a word, then carried the large bag upstairs.
In the elevator, Fu Shuang ran into her manager’s superior—the Personnel Manager who had once specifically assigned her to shred documents. He smirked, his expression half-mocking, half-serious. “Oh, Xiao Shuang, dressed so lightly? Aren’t you worried about getting a cold?”
Fu Shuang secretly rolled her eyes as the man continued, oblivious to her annoyance. “With this cold weather, you girls need to be careful. Getting sick could affect your fertility, you know.”
Fu Shuang forced a tight smile, her eyes burning with the urge to stab this pot-bellied supervisor to death.
Several people were in the elevator, and Fu Shuang remained silent. For a moment, it wasn’t clear who the Personnel Manager was addressing, creating an awkward silence. After a long pause, another Beta girl in the elevator muttered, “You’re a Beta man worrying about other people’s fertility? Are you sick or something?”
The girl wasn’t from their company; she just happened to be sharing the elevator. Though she had no stake in the matter, she couldn’t let the man’s remark slide. She glanced at Fu Shuang with a look of concern.
Fu Shuang couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “Who knows? I wouldn’t dare ask.”
The Personnel Manager was seething with frustration. When the elevator doors opened, he stormed out without even checking the floor.
“Is he your boss?” the Beta girl asked Fu Shuang.
Fu Shuang shrugged. “I’m just an intern, so everyone in the company probably thinks they’re my boss.”
The girl laughed heartily. “You’re so funny! Do you think that little jab you made earlier will affect your work later?”
Fu Shuang considered the question seriously before shaking her head dismissively.
The elevator doors opened. She waved goodbye to the girl and went to clock in at the office.
At lunchtime, when Fu Shuang went to pick up her takeout, she ran into the girl again. The girl approached her and struck up a conversation about work, even inviting Fu Shuang to visit her studio.
The girl’s name was Lucy, two years older than Fu Shuang. She ran an internet company that profited by creating short dramas and videos to gain traffic on various platforms—in other words, a company that cultivated Internet celebrities.
From the moment Lucy saw Fu Shuang, she was struck by the Omega girl’s stunning natural beauty. Her features were striking yet perfectly balanced, far surpassing the surgically enhanced looks of the Internet celebrities in Lucy’s company. With a touch of filters and a hint of suggestive content, Fu Shuang’s beauty could definitely go viral.
The studio was located downstairs from Fu Shuang’s company, so Lucy waited for her to exit the elevator in the morning, hoping to chat a bit longer before returning to her own floor.
Her intentions were obvious, and Fu Shuang understood perfectly, though neither acknowledged it openly. She glanced at the scene inside one of the studio’s live streaming rooms.
A meticulously made-up girl was striking poses in front of the camera, singing a generic, clichéd pop song that catered to older men’s tastes. The entire song consisted of repetitive phrases like “Brother, you…” and “Sister, me…” over and over.
When the song ended, the girl began thanking viewers by name for their virtual gifts, interacting with the chat. Her exaggerated, affected speech made Fu Shuang’s head spin, but seeing the streamer’s radiant, happy expression, Fu Shuang figured she must be earning a lot.
“What do you think of her?” Lucy asked tentatively.
“She’s quite impressive,” Fu Shuang replied tersely.
“She’s one of our company’s top streamers, but honestly,” Lucy whispered in Fu Shuang’s ear, “she’s not even a tenth as beautiful as you.”
Fu Shuang glanced at her with a smile, thinking, You have good taste.
“Do you think I could do this?” she asked, sounding like an innocent young maiden.
“Of course, you could definitely do better than her. Do you know how much she earns in a day?”
Fu Shuang asked sincerely, her eyes wide with genuine curiosity, “How much?”
Lucy leaned in conspiratorially, “On her best days, she can make up to two hundred thousand.”
“Wow,” Fu Shuang swallowed her envy, watching the focused streamer in the live broadcast room. The streamer’s constant “Thank you, Boss!” made it sound like the spenders were her own parents. Fu Shuang’s expression turned somewhat dazed.
“Here’s my business card. Think it over, and you can come find me anytime. I’m just downstairs from your company, so feel free to drop by and hang out whenever you’re free,” Lucy said warmly, offering her card and extending her hand for a handshake.
Fu Shuang stared at Lucy’s outstretched hand, momentarily frozen. It was just a casual handshake, but ever since connecting with her Older Sister, she had developed an aversion to physical contact. Even a brush against her clothes in the morning elevator ride could leave her feeling uneasy for hours.
Lucy didn’t overthink it. In fact, she found Fu Shuang’s slightly dazed demeanor even more endearing and distinctive. Men always liked girls who seemed a little clueless.
“Keep my card safe,” Lucy winked at her. “Come visit our studio again sometime!”
After leaving the studio, Fu Shuang let out a long sigh. Instead of taking the elevator, she chose to walk the stairs back to the office.
Even though her heat cycle had stabilized and she had received a temporary mark, she still felt restless and distracted.
The feeling of not belonging in crowds, the emptiness she felt after just half a day apart, even her mind wandering to her during work… This mark hadn’t solved the fundamental problem; it seemed to have made it worse.
Frustrated, Fu Shuang climbed several flights of stairs in one go, panting for breath in the fire escape.
After resting for a moment, she prepared to climb higher when she suddenly heard someone push open the heavy fire safety door and curse, “Brain-dead idiot! A damn intern trying to ride over me?”
Fu Shuang: “……”
The voice was unmistakable—her Personnel Manager. But the chubby Supervisor was usually quite amiable, never resorting to cursing, even when he disliked her. At most, he would assign her extra tasks to wear her out.
Could this be because of what happened in the elevator this morning?
Fu Shuang froze in place, observing the situation unfold.
“Why are you picking on an intern?” another voice, unfamiliar to Fu Shuang and likely from another department, chimed in with a shrill tone. “A stinky Omega like that shouldn’t even be looking for work. Scare her a little, and she’ll behave. I know a group that specializes in dealing with unruly Omegas. One incident, and they’ll never dare to leave their homes again.”
The portly Personnel Manager hesitated. “…Is that really necessary? If we get rid of her, Xiao Ning will be on my case again…”
Xiao Ning was Fu Shuang’s manager. Through office gossip, Fu Shuang had heard that the portly manager was pursuing her manager romantically.
“Come on, Sister Ning isn’t stupid. If she gets into trouble and quits, how is that your fault? She won’t blame you.”
The manager remained hesitant. Suddenly, a clear, crisp voice rang out from the hallway: “I’m recording this, by the way.”
