Doomsday Awakening GL - Chapter 16
Greed flashed in Yu Le’s eyes. He hadn’t expected An Yimu to actually kill that zombie. He had assumed An Yimu had merely escaped by luck. He stared at the two spider legs, thinking, With these spider legs and my Second-Tier Awakener strength, won’t I be unstoppable? And then Ling Qiuyu will definitely give in to me.
Nuan Qianyu stared blankly at the spider leg in her hand. She suddenly felt a pang of sadness. Her hair hung down, hiding her reddened eyes, and she asked with a slight nasal tone, “What about you then?”
An Yimu smiled, “I managed to kill that zombie, why are you worried about me?”
Ling Qiuyu was also silent. This person was simply too gentle. Whenever one looked into her eyes, one felt like her world revolved around them, which led to so many misunderstandings.
In fact, even An Yimu didn’t know that the zombie had gained that Spider-Zombified mutation through a fluke. If it hadn’t been killed by An Yimu by coincidence today, it would surely have become a dominant force in the future.
Qin Yongsheng secretly made up his mind. He would follow An Yimu through thick and thin from now on. He owed An Yimu two lives. He was a man who valued loyalty and righteousness. Before the apocalypse, he worked in architectural design, and his current journey was for planning purposes. Fortunately, he regularly exercised, which allowed him to escape. He had killed many zombies before joining a team.
Nuan Qianyu gave An Yimu a look. Worry about a ghost! “Let’s go. We need to keep moving.”
Although everyone disliked Yu Le, he did have strength, so they still brought him along. However, one of his legs was corroded by the Spider-Zombified Zombie’s acidic fluid. A large piece of flesh was corroded away, leaving only white bone. It hurt terribly when he walked. He hadn’t noticed much when they were running for their lives earlier, but now that they were safe, the pain was excruciating. He could only groan as he followed the team.
After walking for a short distance, the group reached the highway and successfully found a usable van. Qin Yongsheng hot-wired the door and drove the car, and the group set off.
They were about to reach Chongming City, and everyone was excited, though they didn’t show it much on their faces. Besides excitement, Yu Le was also coveting the spider leg in Ling Qiuyu’s hand. His woman’s possession was naturally his. Although Ling Qiuyu wasn’t his yet, it was only a matter of time. Thinking this, a bright smile appeared on his well-defined face.
After the fight, it was now 7 PM. Everyone’s phones had long run out of battery, but fortunately, An Yimu was used to wearing a watch, so they weren’t completely unaware of the time.
At 9 PM, just as they were about to reach Chongming City, they were blocked by a crack in the road that was a hundred meters wide. They could see Chongming City when they looked up, but they couldn’t cross! This feeling was too despairing, like a person about to starve to death, with a steamed bun right in front of them, but lacking the strength to reach it.
It was already dark, so they had to make plans for tomorrow. Walking at night was too dangerous.
Everyone’s mood was a bit low. After lighting a bonfire, they were lost in their own thoughts. Only Yu Le was close to Ling Qiuyu, talking incessantly.
Ling Qiuyu disgustedly moved away from him and sat next to An Yimu.
Yu Le cursed softly a few times. The pain in his leg distracted him, so he didn’t pursue Ling Qiuyu anymore.
After arranging the guards for the night, everyone rested. An Yimu was scheduled for the third shift. The day’s battle had exhausted her, and she fell asleep as soon as she lay down.
In the middle of the night, An Yimu suddenly felt a sensation of suffocation. Her sleep was restless. She woke up abruptly to find Gu Linlin lying on top of her, her hands gripping her neck.
Gu Linlin’s eyes were murky, and her beautiful face wore a grim expression. She muttered, “Kill you, kill you…”
An Yimu abruptly recalled what Gu Linlin had said that day about being fed something.
The threat to her life forced An Yimu to fight back. She kicked Gu Linlin off her, jumped up, and stood, gulping down fresh air. She glanced around. Gu Linlin was on the second shift. Yu Le, who was on the same shift, was lying on the ground, still and terrified, she couldn’t tell if he was dead or alive.
Gu Linlin slowly stood up and walked toward An Yimu step by step. Her murky eyes were full of murderous intent. She was holding the spider leg An Yimu had given to Nuan and Ling, but only one of them. An Yimu’s heart skipped a beat, and she quickly shouted for Nuan Qianyu and Ling Qiuyu.
Everyone was sleeping lightly at night. The shout woke the other three, and they were astonished at the sight before them.
Qin Yongsheng shouted, “Gu Linlin! What are you doing?”
Nuan Qianyu exclaimed, “My spider leg!”
Qin Yongsheng noticed Yu Le lying on the ground and quickly went over to check his breathing. “Good, he’s not dead.”
An Yimu was relieved to hear that the others were safe. It seemed Yu Le had been knocked out by Gu Linlin, but how could Gu Linlin beat the Second-Tier Awakened Yu Le?
Gu Linlin seemed to only have eyes for An Yimu. She just kept approaching An Yimu, holding the spider leg. An Yimu knew the potent poison on the spider leg, so she dealt with it cautiously. She guessed, Had Gu Linlin turned into a zombie? But she didn’t have any zombie features. Gu Linlin’s hands that were gripping her neck earlier were still warm.
Seeing An Yimu threatened, Ling Qiuyu grabbed her spider leg and circled behind Gu Linlin. Gu Linlin, however, seemed completely unaware. She wildly slashed at An Yimu with the spider leg in one hand.
An Yimu ducked low, avoiding Gu Linlin’s erratic attacks.
Gu Linlin suddenly leaped, a height of two meters, and swung the spider leg down. An Yimu sidestepped, raising her leg to kick Gu Linlin in the waist. Gu Linlin was kicked and tumbled to the ground but still struggled to get up. She didn’t seem to care that the spider leg accidentally cut her own hand.
Gu Linlin attacked, and An Yimu avoided. The two seemed to be playing a game. In just a few seconds, Gu Linlin’s arm began to swell, tearing through her clothes. Black, earthworm-like things were wrapped around her arm, making one nauseous.
An Yimu knew the poison was taking effect.
Gu Linlin switched hands and continued to attack An Yimu. An Yimu knew Gu Linlin hadn’t turned into a zombie, so she couldn’t strike harshly. She only kept dodging, looking for an opportunity to subdue her, thinking that the poison would make her lose consciousness soon. With this thought, she drew her dagger and met the attack. To her surprise, with her current strength, which was three times that of a normal person, Gu Linlin’s single blow actually bent her knee, forcing her to kneel halfway. The web of her hand gripping the dagger ached intensely from the shock.
Gu Linlin raised her hand, ready to strike again. An Yimu, having learned her lesson, quickly dodged. Gu Linlin’s movements suddenly became much faster. Besides the spider leg, she also had a small knife in her hand.
Seeing Ling Qiuyu behind Gu Linlin, An Yimu understood and led Gu Linlin toward her. When the spider leg swung down, An Yimu quickly grabbed Gu Linlin’s wrist.
Ling Qiuyu seized the opportunity, gripping the spider leg and stabbing it into Gu Linlin’s body. The spider leg passed through her from back to front.
Gu Linlin looked at An Yimu with hazy eyes, which then cleared up somewhat. She opened her mouth as if to say something. A tear slipped down her cheek, and she finally fell to the ground.
A stream of milky-white energy shot from Gu Linlin’s brain into Ling Qiuyu’s brain.
An Yimu hadn’t fully recovered her wits. What did Gu Linlin want to tell her before she died? Her mouth seemed to form the word “nan” or “lan”? It was too bizarre. What exactly did that group of people feed Gu Linlin?
Ling Qiuyu pulled An Yimu closer and said softly, “How could Gu Linlin turn into a zombie, all of a sudden?”
An Yimu’s expression changed slightly. Ling Qiuyu didn’t know what had happened to Gu Linlin and thought she had turned into a zombie, which was why she delivered the fatal blow. If she knew the truth, she would probably blame herself for life. An Yimu immediately decided not to tell anyone, although she herself still felt astonished when thinking back.
Why did Gu Linlin knock out and injure Yu Le instead of directly killing him? What exactly happened to Gu Linlin? All these questions became unsolvable mysteries with Gu Linlin’s demise.
“Little An’an, get out of the way!”
Nuan Qianyu suddenly shouted.
An Yimu quickly pulled Ling Qiuyu back. Looking closely, she saw Gu Linlin’s flesh rapidly decompose into corpse fluid, leaving only her clothes wrapped around a skeleton.
A strange insect crawled out from the white bones.
“Ah!” Ling Qiuyu grabbed An Yimu’s arm, screaming. She had been afraid of insects since she was a child.
An insect? Could it be some kind of Gu worm? That was too far-fetched! How could such a thing exist! Or was this a mutated insect? There are countless insects in the world. If they could all mutate, humans wouldn’t survive! An Yimu stared at the insect with surprise and uncertainty. The insect had a strange appearance that she had never seen before. Nuan Qianyu could spot it because it was quite large, only slightly smaller than a fist.
An Yimu picked up the spider leg on the ground and stabbed the insect with it. The insect struggled twice and then stopped moving.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief but were still terrified.
They were only one step away from returning to Chongming City, yet Gu Linlin died here. Such an outcome made everyone feel terrible. Since the apocalypse, people around them were constantly dying, in various ways. Humanity was so small, so vulnerable, like dust in this world.
Qin Yongsheng dug a pit and buried Gu Linlin’s remains.
An Yimu began to wonder. The apocalypse came too suddenly, followed by zombies, mutated animals, the strange fog, and none of it could be explained by science.
