Doomsday Awakening GL - Chapter 2
An Yimu naturally saw it too, but the figure was moving very slowly, which gave them ample time to leave.
The three of them dared not stay a moment longer, got into the car, and drove away.
Ling Qiuyu, her face pale, looked helplessly at her phone. “My phone has no signal, Xiaoyu, check yours quickly.” She was originally going to call the police, but unexpectedly, her phone lost its signal, and emergency calls couldn’t be made either.
Nuan Qianyu’s face was also distraught, her hand still trembling. After a long pause, she said with a sobbing voice: “I… I… mine doesn’t have a signal either.”
The car hadn’t driven far before it hit something with a bang.
An Yimu didn’t expect these monsters to not fear the car and crash directly into it. She was driving very fast, but a group of monsters was blocking the front, effectively jamming the car and preventing it from moving. In the moment she was stunned, several monsters were already reaching out their claws and smashing the car window.
Nuan Qianyu screamed.
An Yimu bit her lower lip and immediately executed a drift, turning the car back. She originally intended to return to Chongming City, but this time, she was forced to drive in the opposite direction. The monsters were moving very slowly, and she quickly put a few hundred meters between them. After some thought, she decided to drive to the nearest county to seek help.
There were many cars on the highway, and others were driving in the same direction as them, each one driving faster than the last, as if being chased by a ghost—which was not far from the truth.
An Yimu didn’t dare look at the stopped cars, afraid that the people inside were those kind of monsters.
“Have you two ever watched Resident Evil?” Nuan Qianyu suddenly asked in the quiet car.
In her memory, Nuan Qianyu rarely spoke with such a serious tone, but An Yimu still honestly replied, “No, what’s wrong?” She rarely watched horror or gore films.
“This… could it be zombies?” Ling Qiuyu hesitated.
The car fell silent again, except for the vibration of the engine.
An Yimu was the first to speak, “No matter what it is, the government won’t abandon us. Let’s drive to Meixian County first, find a place to stop and rest.”
Nuan Qianyu and Ling Qiuyu didn’t speak, accepting the plan by default.
When the car was 1km away from the Meixian County highway exit, An Yimu saw, from a distance, about seven zombies attacking two men and one woman. The few passing cars did not stop and drove past. She saw the only girl waving at their car, her lips opening and closing, shouting something she couldn’t hear.
“Should we help?” After killing one zombie, An Yimu clearly gained some courage, but she still had to consult the other two. Her instinct was that the risk was too great, and she wouldn’t intervene.
“Xiaomu, can you handle it? If you can…” Ling Qiuyu’s voice gradually trailed off. She felt very guilty for asking Xiaomu to take a risk when she herself had no capability, but she couldn’t live with herself if she turned a blind eye.
Nuan Qianyu rolled her eyes upon hearing this. “Ling Dabeauty’s Holy Mother complex is acting up again.” She rubbed her hands, her enchanting face flushed red. “I’ll go down and help too!” She was not a timid person, loved watching horror movies and reading novels. She had only been stunned earlier by the sudden appearance of the zombies, but now that she had recovered, she was secretly excited.
An Yimu agreed with a hum. She stopped the car about 20 meters away from the group. Not trusting Ling Qiuyu, she asked her to stay in the car. She and Nuan Qianyu got out, grabbed their police batons, and rushed over.
Seeing people coming to their aid, the two men’s eyes lit up, and they immediately hit the zombies with more force. They were holding iron rods, which they must have found somewhere.
When An Yimu first killed that zombie, she was too nervous and forgot that the police baton could be electrified. Although the voltage was not high, it was enough to cause localized numbness. This time, she intended to test it, so she turned on the switch and rushed forward fearlessly.
The group of zombies seemed to sense the newcomers, and three of them lunged towards the two girls.
An Yimu roared at Nuan Qianyu, “Be careful not to get hurt.” She couldn’t be sure if they were infectious.
Two zombies lumbered towards An Yimu. One vaguely looked like a woman, and the other was a sturdy man. Both were completely decayed, with yellowish pus leaking from visible spots, their faces contorted, and low growls escaping their mouths.
An Yimu suppressed the fear in her heart, gripped the police baton with both hands, and swung it at the smaller female zombie. The female zombie raised a hand to block, seemingly unaffected. The male zombie saw an opening and lunged from behind An Yimu, its jaws wide open.
An Yimu’s heart contracted. It seemed this level of electricity was useless against the zombies. Her eyes flickered. Using the force from the female zombie’s block, she intensified the power in her hands, lifted her legs, and stomped on the male zombie’s chest. Using the leverage, she executed a front flip, landing behind the female zombie, and quickly elbowed her, pushing the female zombie towards the male zombie. With her body’s agility, she swung the police baton horizontally at the female zombie’s neck.
The force was so great that she staggered back a few steps. With a crack, the female zombie’s head flew off, and its body fell straight to the ground. An Yimu breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed her guess was correct; the zombie’s weakness was the brain.
The male zombie roared, stepped on the female zombie’s corpse, and leaped at An Yimu. An Yimu did not dodge. She took a deep breath and plunged the police baton vertically into its chest. A hole was pierced in the male zombie’s chest, and its spine cracked.
She quickly pulled out the police baton, and the male zombie tumbled to the ground. An Yimu didn’t give it a chance to get up. She rushed forward and mashed the male zombie’s head. Seeing the zombie stop moving, she ran back to help Nuan Qianyu.
Nuan Qianyu was untrained. She was just swinging the police baton wildly. Although it hindered the zombie’s movement, it couldn’t inflict a fatal wound. The two sides were at a stalemate, but Nuan Qianyu’s stamina began to fail. She hit the zombie’s shoulder with force, but her hands went soft, and she let go of the baton, which flew a good distance away.
Without the protection of a weapon, the zombie didn’t hesitate and lunged.
In her fright, Nuan Qianyu forgot to run and reflexively closed her eyes. However, the expected pain never came. She opened her eyes just a slit to see the zombie had fallen, its head rolling to the side. Standing in front of her was An Yimu.
After rescuing Nuan Qianyu, An Yimu didn’t linger and ran towards the other three people.
Nuan Qianyu patted her chest, catching her breath. She then picked up her police baton and used it to poke around in the zombie’s head. She was a little disappointed not to find the crystal nucleus mentioned in novels.
The two men protected the girl behind them, but they were afraid of getting hurt by the zombies, so although their attacks were fierce, they always missed the vital points.
An Yimu rushed forward, jumped, and kicked one of the outer zombies aside, skillfully smashing the zombie’s head. Fortunately, these zombies were slow, and their attacks could be dodged.
After two or three minutes, the remaining three zombies also fell, one by one. It turned out that all seven zombies were killed by An Yimu.
The three people were very excited. The only girl stepped forward and said, “Thank you, I’m Song Xuezhi, and this is my boyfriend, Gao Jingwen.” She pointed to a tall, blonde guy next to her. Before she could continue, the other guy in the white t-shirt stepped forward and said with a cheerful smile, “Hello, beauty, I’m Zhang Shan.”
Zhang Shan continued, “Thanks to your help, beauty. You wouldn’t believe how many cars passed by without stopping before you came. We were going back to our hometown for the holiday, four of us in total, Gao Jingwen and I are from the same place. We didn’t expect this to happen midway; the other person turned into a zombie. If you hadn’t helped, we might have been fed to the zombies today. Ah, beauty, I’ve talked so much and don’t even know your name.” He finished, scratching the back of his head sheepishly.
“…An Yimu.” This was truly the first time she had met someone more casually friendly than Nuan Qianyu. However, regarding the actions of the passing cars, she didn’t feel anything particular. Self-preservation in danger was only natural. If it weren’t for Qiuyu’s Holy Mother tendency, she would never have gotten involved.
Song Xuezhi tugged at Zhang Shan’s sleeve. She could tell An Yimu was not interested in further conversation, but traveling together was a good idea at this time, after all, there’s strength in numbers, and their car was destroyed. She thought for a moment and said, “Miss An, why don’t you travel with us? Where are you planning to go?”
An Yimu frowned and pondered. More people meant more security, so she agreed. “We plan to stop and rest in Meixian County first, and then return to the city.”
Zhang Shan seemed to realize he had been a bit long-winded and fell silent. Hearing this, he interjected, “That’s perfect, we’re going to Meixian County too. We were almost there when this happened. Let’s go together.”
Song Xuezhi’s boyfriend, Gao Jingwen, seemed to be a quiet person and had been silent all this time. Only after the decision was made did he speak, “I’ll go see if that car can still be driven.”
The car was very close to them, and the door was broken. It seemed the recent zombies were the people from that car. Gao Jingwen sat in the driver’s seat and tested it, then shouted, “It works! Xiaoxue, Old Zhang, get in.”
An Yimu saw the two people get into the car before walking back. She happened to see Nuan Qianyu seriously digging through the zombie’s head looking for something. She walked over and patted her on the shoulder, saying, “Stop looking, let’s get in the car.”
Nuan Qianyu got up, stretched her somewhat numb legs, and got into the car. Then, she muttered mysteriously, “Novels are really misleading. Where are the crystal nuclei? I thought I could awaken some kind of ability! Sigh!”
An Yimu started the car and informed the two about the decision to travel with Song Xuezhi and the others. As her car approached Song Xuezhi’s car, she noticed they hadn’t moved and instantly understood: they were letting her lead the way.
The highway exit for Meixian County led to a service station, where many cars were parked, and over ten people were sitting by the roadside talking. Seeing no zombies, An Yimu parked the car with relief.
The three people got out of the car. An Yimu pulled out her phone, unlocked the screen, and checked the time: 3:26 PM, still no signal.
Ling Qiuyu was already prone to carsickness, and the shock made her feel very weak. She found a place to sit after getting out of the car. She also tried to check her phone, but the battery was dead, so she reluctantly put it away.
Nuan Qianyu sat by Ling Qiuyu to take care of her.
After settling the two of them, An Yimu began to carefully observe the people.
Just then, a bald man with a cigarette dangling from his mouth walked towards them.
