Doomsday Awakening GL - Chapter 29
Circumventing the zombie’s body, she searched the room and found that most of the food had been touched, including some snacks that only had empty wrappers left, and the room’s occupant had also stored water.
An Yimu felt confused. This meant that the zombie just now was the room’s owner. This woman had hidden in the room for a period after the apocalypse began, but how did she turn into a zombie later?
They still didn’t know the transmission method for the zombie infection. At least An Yimu was certain that being bitten or scratched would not transmit the infection. She had always believed that only humans who suffered a fatal attack from a zombie and had an intact brain would turn into a zombie. So, how did this woman turn into a zombie? Why was her bl00d red? Or was the woman in the process of turning into a zombie, not having fully transformed? And why was she a second-stage zombie?
These questions had no one to help her answer, at least for now.
After cleaning up, An Yimu found that the room had no usable items or food, which disappointed her somewhat. She closed the door and went to the room across the hall.
With the appearance of this female zombie, An Yimu didn’t dare to be careless, keeping her eyes peeled and ears open, cautiously paying attention to her surroundings.
Kicking open the door, the first thing An Yimu saw was the refrigerator. She quickly ran over and opened the refrigerator door, finding some in-season fruits inside. An Yimu stuffed a few still-intact apples into her backpack, then opened the lower compartment, where she was pleasantly surprised to find a box of chocolates.
Thinking of Lan Chang’s satisfied expression, An Yimu let out a sigh of relief. She put some of the chocolate into her own pocket and tucked the rest into her backpack. She worried that if she encountered a zombie she couldn’t handle, she might lose her backpack, so keeping some food on her person felt safer.
The bottom layer contained some raw meat. Opening it released a pungent, raw odor.
An Yimu didn’t bother to look. After closing the refrigerator, she entered the inner room. The room was relatively tidy. She silently apologized to the room’s owner in her heart before starting to rummage through the cabinets and drawers. Soon, she noticed a box under the table. She opened it and found a case of instant noodles.
An Yimu was delighted. This was excellent for filling the stomach! Although she had always considered it junk food before the apocalypse, she couldn’t afford to be picky now. Being able to fill her stomach was good enough. Food like instant noodles, which were both filling and easy to store, was the best choice.
However, how could she carry a whole case? With An Yimu’s current strength, she could naturally lift it, but carrying it would make movement very inconvenient, and the large target would also attract zombies’ attention.
If she had called the others to come with her… No, that was too dangerous.
An Yimu finally decided to let go of some of the noodles. After stuffing her backpack full, she left.
The food was almost sufficient to sustain them for some time. The remaining necessity was water. An Yimu was well aware of the importance of water to the human body. A person could survive without food for seven days, but three days without water would be fatal.
After clearing out the entire female employee dormitory building and dealing with the occasional zombies in individual rooms, An Yimu emerged. She had collected a jar of jam, some dry bread, a few apples, a box of chocolates, some instant noodles, and a few bottles of water she found later. She also found a powerful flashlight and a compass.
An Yimu guessed that since there was an employee canteen nearby, fewer people kept their own food reserves. She checked room by room and found only a few households were cooking for themselves. The canteen should have stocked fresh vegetables and rice/flour, which were not the ideal foods she was looking for. But with this haul, An Yimu was very satisfied. One couldn’t be greedy.
Considering the inconvenience of the male employee dormitory, An Yimu wasn’t in the mood to search there as well.
Walking towards the exit of the employee dormitory, she noticed a map detailing the entire factory layout, with all the points clearly marked, which was very detailed.
An Yimu pondered for a moment and decided to go to the shipment and storage area. In her mind, the production department should be the place with the most zombies, so she would go there last. The remaining areas could mostly be ignored.
The shipment and storage area was not far from the employee dormitory, only a few hundred meters away. An Yimu quickly arrived on foot. She climbed a wall to observe. The zombies here had evolved quickly. The highest level was only second-stage, and none had evolved special abilities. There were about seventy to eighty of them, wearing work uniforms that were faintly recognizable.
An Yimu jumped in from a corner, put down her backpack, and rushed towards the zombies with the bone knife in hand.
She needed power, needed to become stronger, needed to advance. Four-stage zombies had already appeared, and she was stuck at the third stage, which made her very uneasy.
Initial Zombies and second-stage zombies were no match for her. In a moment’s time, An Yimu had defeated them utterly, sending them scattering in all directions.
An Yimu’s attacks were extremely accurate; almost every strike resulted in a zombie’s death. The bone knife in her hand was like a tiger’s wings, multiplying her attack power.
Soon, a zombie caught An Yimu’s attention. That zombie stood at the warehouse entrance, half-hidden inside, its pair of pitch-black eyes fixed on An Yimu.
Based on experience, An Yimu judged this must be a third-stage zombie. She didn’t know what ability it might have evolved.
When zombies evolve to the third stage, they gain intelligence. The stronger ones develop abilities, and some undergo unique mutations.
An Yimu sighed at the unfairness. Humans could gain energy by killing zombies but couldn’t apply it, only strengthening their physical constitution while their hearing, sight, and speed improved to a certain extent. Moreover, this was something anyone could achieve. As long as you dared to kill a zombie, you could gain this ability. This was also why An Yimu felt immense pressure. The human population was so large, and the number of people who dared to kill zombies would only increase.
Similarly, zombies could gain energy by killing humans. This racial opposition was mutual. More importantly, zombie evolution was much faster than human evolution.
An Yimu let out a long shout, kicked away the low-level zombies nearby, slightly gathered the bone knife, and used her momentum to leap and charge towards the third-stage zombie.
The third-stage zombie’s head moved slightly, and it stretched out a massive arm, more than three meters long, that swatted at An Yimu.
An Yimu was unprepared. She raised her hand and slashed with the bone knife, creating a terrifying wound on the zombie’s arm.
This was the suppressive effect of rank. Her bone knife was an item from a fourth-stage zombie, so it could naturally injure this third-stage zombie.
The zombie roared in anger, and its whole body was revealed.
One of the zombie’s arms was over three meters long, while the other was two meters, looking very asymmetrical. Was this an Ape-like Zombie?
An Yimu did not dare to be careless, taking light steps to maintain distance from the zombie. At this moment, she realized the importance of ability even more. If she were a fourth-stage Awakener, she would have a crushing advantage right now.
The third-stage Ape-like Zombie roared, pounding its arms together and smashing them heavily on the ground. The ground shook violently. The zombie took the opportunity to crash into An Yimu like a cannonball.
An Yimu lost her footing. Seeing the zombie crashing towards her, she gripped the bone knife, ready for a killing blow. After her last fight with the Bone-like Zombie, she dared not underestimate a zombie’s intelligence. She didn’t believe this third-stage zombie would rush to its death, knowing her bone knife could injure it!
Sure enough, as the zombie rushed forward, a long tail whip suddenly whistled and struck from behind An Yimu.
Evolving to the third stage had lengthened the Ape-like Zombie’s arms and tailbone.
An Yimu calmed down, tracing a pattern with her feet like the Big Dipper constellation. Just before the third-stage Ape-like Zombie pounced, she suddenly stepped back and grabbed the thick tailbone with one hand.
The zombie let out a terrifying shriek. It lifted and slammed its tailbone down, whipping frantically.
An Yimu knew that the biggest advantage against this Ape-like Zombie was agility. She released the tailbone she was holding and quickly circled behind the zombie.
The zombie’s tailbone followed, lashing out from behind.
An Yimu quickly dodged the tailbone attacks, trying her best to evade both the zombie’s arms and its tailbone.
Having failed to injure An Yimu for some time, the Ape-like Zombie suddenly jumped a few times in place, shaking the ground violently.
An Yimu was caught off guard and accidentally fell to the ground.
Seizing the opportunity, the zombie pressed down, its tailbone’s small hook lashing towards An Yimu’s head.
An Yimu swiftly moved her head away. The blow shaved off half of An Yimu’s ponytail. An Yimu was enraged. She sprang up with a powerful backflip, wielding the bone knife like a pair of nunchaku, continuously closing in on the zombie.
The Ape-like Zombie had been hurt by the bone knife and was very wary, constantly retreating in the face of An Yimu’s sudden aggression.
An Yimu shouted clearly, grabbed the zombie’s tailbone, pulled hard towards herself, and with a push of her foot, released the bone knife, sending it flying toward the zombie.
The bone knife’s speed was too fast. The zombie couldn’t dodge. The bone knife pierced through the zombie’s abdomen, and An Yimu also arrived, stepping on the arm the zombie swung at her, jumping onto the zombie’s skull. She narrowed her eyes and forcefully slammed both hands down on the zombie’s head.
The zombie let out a high-pitched, furious roar.
An Yimu jumped off the zombie’s body and quickly retrieved the bone knife that had passed through the zombie’s body.
While the zombie was still going insane, An Yimu, holding the bone knife, directly chopped off the zombie’s head. Black bl00d splattered out, and the zombie’s heavy body fell straight to the ground.
Instantly, a surge of energy swirled in her palm and flowed into her brain.
An Yimu took a deep breath. The energy gained from killing a zombie of the same rank was much more than from a low-level zombie. This third-stage Ape-like Zombie, combined with the low-level zombies she killed earlier, had filled three-fifths of the nodule in her brain.
Her spirits were greatly lifted. She would soon be able to break through to the fourth stage. According to her previous calculations, if she could kill three more third-stage zombies, she could break through to become a fourth-stage Awakener.
She glanced around. The surrounding low-level zombies, deterred by her strength, instinctively scattered in all directions.
