Doomsday Awakening GL - Chapter 8
An Yimu crouched down and, when the zombie was still about a meter away, she suddenly rushed forward. Just as she was about to make contact, her body shifted, and the fruit knife in her hand cleanly severed one of the zombie’s arms.
The zombie roared in frustration, clearly not expecting this thing to injure it. It now regarded An Yimu with fear and turned to run.
An Yimu would not let this zombie go. This zombie clearly possessed intelligence, indicating that zombies could evolve. If she let it go and it targeted them later, they would be finished.
With this thought, An Yimu made a few light leaps and arrived in front of the zombie. She gripped the fruit knife and thrust it forward. The zombie instinctively used its remaining arm to block but only created a larger gash. An Yimu seized the opportunity and thrust the fruit knife into the zombie’s head.
A milky-white substance, larger than before, shot from the zombie’s brain into the birthmark on An Yimu’s right hand, then converged into the bean-shaped body in her brain.
An Yimu took a deep breath. Seeing the few people still surrounded by zombies, she lunged forward. The fruit knife in her hand danced with fierce power, striking directly at the zombies’ brains every time. Like a tiger among a flock of sheep, the ground was soon covered with fallen zombies. Nearly a hundred zombies were laid low just like that. Each time she killed a zombie, a bit of milky-white energy flowed into her palm. When she killed the last zombie, her palm felt slightly warm, and the normally pale pink birthmark looked as if it had been stained with bl00d.
Recalling that the milky-white substance had also shot into Nuan Qianyu’s brain earlier, An Yimu had a rough theory.
The zombie’s weakness was the head. Whoever killed the zombie would gain the milky-white substance inside the zombie’s head. An Yimu could see this substance after her bone regeneration this morning. It seemed only after killing a certain number of zombies could one see it, and it would increase physical strength, hearing, eyesight, etc., and boost explosive power.
However, she didn’t know why the substance shot directly into Nuan Qianyu and Tang Nengping’s heads but into her own palm. She was also unclear about what the bean-shaped body in her brain was, or how to utilize the milky-white substance.
After killing these nearly hundred zombies, An Yimu felt that the bean-shaped body was filled with two-thirds of the milky-white substance. She was faintly looking forward to what would happen when it was completely full. If her guess was correct, she would have to find a way for Nuan Qianyu and Ling Qiuyu to kill zombies.
In the few seconds she spent thinking, the other three were already stunned. An Yimu was like a female God of War, invincible, so powerful that people couldn’t help but worship her. A woman had massacred nearly a hundred zombies by herself!
“Xiaomu, what about your injuries…?” Ling Qiuyu was the first to snap back to reality. She instantly saw An Yimu’s bl00d-stained sleeve and the tear in her pants, where the fabric and flesh were stuck together.
An Yimu had been lost in thought and only now noticed her wounds, wincing in pain. However, she confirmed that getting scratched by a zombie would not cause a transformation. As for being bitten or other situations, that remained to be studied. “It’s fine, just needs bandaging,” her voice was faint.
“Little An’an… you’re so amazing…” Nuan Qianyu stared at An Yimu, her eyes shining.
“Not really. Let’s leave here quickly,” An Yimu turned her head away shyly, changing the subject.
A trace of an unknown emotion flashed in Ling Qiuyu’s eyes. She secretly watched An Yimu’s slightly flushed cheeks. This girl was still so easily embarrassed.
“Exactly, exactly! I knew we didn’t check the almanac before going out! Such bad luck! If Little An’an hadn’t been so brave, we would have been dismembered today!” Nuan Qianyu didn’t notice the expressions of An Yimu and Ling Qiuyu and lamented mournfully.
Tang Nengping secretly celebrated his choice to follow An Yimu. If he hadn’t followed these girls, he would still have come here to look for food. He couldn’t even handle that group of zombies, let alone the pitch-black zombie An Yimu fought. Fear was also visible in the eyes of the man nearing 40.
An Yimu could feel her wounds healing, so she simply tore some clothes and wrapped the injuries casually.
The three people were originally planning to leave the city, but at An Yimu’s request, they entered it. She had a purpose in doing this: she had to carefully confirm the true use of this bean-shaped body and whether it was as she suspected. The zombies in the city provided her with “data” for verification.
The three were already exhausted from their fighting, so after reaching the city center, they found a broken wall for cover and rested.
Nuan Qianyu had been scratched with a few shallow wounds while fighting the zombies. Although not serious, they were quite an eyesore, and An Yimu was even more upset.
“Qianyu, Qiuyu, you two must also learn to kill zombies more often from now on. What would you do if something happened to me?” An Yimu couldn’t even imagine how two fragile girls would survive in this changed world.
Ling Qiuyu quietly “mm-hmm”ed.
Nuan Qianyu moved closer to An Yimu and said with a giggling smile, “Don’t worry. This old lady will take care of those zombies. Little An’an, did you forget that I love watching horror movies the most?” She finished with a suggestive smile, lifted An Yimu’s chin with her jade finger, and pretended to lean in for a kiss.
“Ah ah ah…!”
An Yimu was just stunned when she heard a scream and instinctively jumped up.
“Not far from us, at about 10 o’clock, 200 meters away, someone is surrounded by zombies,” Ling Qiuyu said to An Yimu, her face cold as she looked into the distance.
“We’ll go over and help. You two can also practice killing zombies. Be careful and don’t push yourselves.” An Yimu said, giving Ling Qiuyu a specific look. Ling Qiuyu was physically weak, and the zombies were so strong that saying she shouldn’t push herself was an understatement. But now, she had to make them adapt to this environment.
“Tch…” Nuan Qianyu looked at the distance in dissatisfaction, flames dancing in her eyes. Couldn’t these zombies stop ruining her fun? It was a rare chance to flirt with Little An’an.
An Yimu’s speed was fast, and she ran in the lead. As she got closer, she saw five people surrounded—three men and two women—by about 10 zombies.
Drawing the fruit knife tucked into her waistband, An Yimu instantly charged into the fray.
Her strength was twice that of a normal person, and these zombies were still the unevolved, ordinary kind. She snapped one zombie’s head with one hand. Using the force of the zombie falling, she kicked out, exploding the head of a nearby zombie. Pus splattered and soaked her pants.
An Yimu suddenly remembered the zombie Li Ziyue turned into this morning, and how that shredded meat stuck to her face. Her expression instantly changed. Her stomach churned, and she dry-heaved for a long time but couldn’t throw up anything.
Six zombies remained. The five people were already terrified by An Yimu’s actions, standing like wooden stakes, their eyes wide as they stared at An Yimu.
An Yimu gripped the fruit knife. With a swift swing of her hand, she quickly dealt with four zombies. She then kicked the remaining two zombies to the ground. Just then, the other three also arrived.
An Yimu handed the knife to Nuan Qianyu. “Kill this one.”
Nuan Qianyu excitedly took the fruit knife and rubbed her hands. This zombie was pinned under An Yimu’s foot and couldn’t move, only roaring furiously. Nuan Qianyu tightly gripped the knife, licked her lips, and, steeling her resolve, plunged the blade into the zombie’s head. She added a few more strikes for good measure.
Sure enough, An Yimu saw a milky-white substance shoot into Nuan Qianyu’s brain. This time, An Yimu was very close and saw it clearly. Strangely, the amount of energy seemed half of what she got from killing the same type of zombie.
She pulled the knife out of the zombie’s head and handed it to Ling Qiuyu, her expression brooking no refusal.
Ling Qiuyu took the knife with a pale face. The blade still had zombie brain matter on it, and a stench of rotting corpse entered her nose. Looking at the other struggling zombie on the ground, her face grew even paler. She looked on the verge of tears. She pressed her lips together, neither speaking nor moving, her hand holding the knife trembling slightly.
Just then, the zombie forcefully broke free of An Yimu’s restraint and lunged toward Ling Qiuyu.
An Yimu reacted quickly with a roundhouse kick, sending the zombie flying, then stomped down with force, exploding the zombie’s head. She turned to look at Ling Qiuyu with concern, but she saw fear in Ling Qiuyu’s eyes.
That fear was not for the zombie; it was for herself.
An Yimu’s heart tightened. She closed her eyes and then opened them, only to see Ling Qiuyu’s expression was normal. Had she been mistaken just now?
The five people pushed a young man forward. His voice trembling, the man looked at An Yimu and said, “Can we join your team?”
An Yimu had virtually instantly killed those zombies just now. She was truly too powerful. If they could get her protection, they could survive. The weak are generally willing to attach themselves to the strong to survive.
An Yimu didn’t speak. So, Tang Nengping stepped forward. “That sounds good. The more people, the safer we are. We…”
Before he could finish, he was interrupted by a roar.
A zombie suddenly appeared behind the five people.
An Yimu’s eyes flashed. She took the fruit knife from Ling Qiuyu’s hand, jumped up, and rushed over.
It took little effort. The fruit knife pierced through the zombie’s body, almost tearing the zombie in half.
A milky-white substance, even greater than the black zombie’s, converged into her brain. An Yimu felt the bean-shaped body was almost full—just a little more to go.
However, why was this evolved zombie so easily killed by her?
Just then, three men appeared from behind—one strongly built, about 1.8 meters tall; one thin and tall, with shifty, rat-like eyes; and one who looked very honest and simple.
The strong man saw the corpse of the zombie An Yimu had just killed and roared, “Who the heck killed it? I’ve been chasing it for days, and which bastard snatched it?”
An Yimu understood. It seemed these people were tracking this zombie. No wonder it was killed so easily by her; it must have been injured. She covertly observed the three men.
Everyone remained silent, and the five people also said nothing.
Seeing no one speak, the man grew angrier. He was about to speak but was pulled back by the tall, thin man. “Look at those three beauties,” his tone was very flippant.
The man immediately looked An Yimu, Nuan Qianyu, and Ling Qiuyu up and down, showing an excited expression. He scanned the nine people, then fixed his gaze on Tang Nengping.
“You’re their leader, right? If you hand over these women to us, we’ll call it even for the zombie you killed. Otherwise, all of you will die here.”
Tang Nengping’s face flushed upon hearing this. He was hardly the leader; An Yimu was clearly the most powerful person here. He subconsciously looked at An Yimu but saw her expression was indifferent, her eyes half-closed, as if she was thinking about something. He grew even more nervous, unsure how to respond to the man.
The tall, thin man’s expression turned ferocious. “What, you’re not willing?”
Rustle… Rustle…
An Yimu quietly listened to the sounds nearby. Something was approaching them…
