Dressed as the Scumbag Alpha Mom of the Tragic Female Lead (ABO, GL) - Chapter 68
Chapter 68
“…The fetus and the mother are both in good condition, but you’re approaching four months now, and the mother’s need for Alpha pheromones will increase. If your partner is an Alpha, have her spend more time with you.”
“I understand. Thank you, doctor.”
Gu Lingjun’s belly was only slightly rounded now, and when she wore loose jackets, no one could tell she was pregnant.
“It’s already four months,” Zhao Zi said, unable to resist touching Gu Lingjun’s stomach, marveling, “It’s still so small. Are you eating properly?”
Since Jiang Chuxie had an appointment with a therapist, she was worried about Gu Lingjun going to her checkup alone and asked Zhao Zi to accompany her.
Gu Lingjun smiled lightly, pushing her hand away. “Of course I’m eating well. Chuxie’s cooking is delicious. Look, my face has even gotten rounder.”
“Jiang Chuxie’s cooking is pretty good,” Zhao Zi nodded in agreement. “But why is she seeing a therapist again? Is she okay?”
“She’s just a bit too tense. I’m worried she’ll wear herself out.”
Zhao Zi chuckled. “You’re the one pregnant, not her. How come she’s acting like she’s got prenatal depression?”
“She’s always been someone who overthinks… worries too much.”
“Well, I’d say it’s also because your family still hasn’t accepted her. Plus, after what happened to her before, it’s only human to be nervous.”
The two chatted softly as they left the consultation room, heading toward the therapy department to wait for Jiang Chuxie. But as soon as they stepped out, they ran into Gao Yuanxun. The mixed-race doctor, dressed in a pristine white coat and gold-rimmed glasses, looked refined and aloof.
“Yuanxun-jie, what a coincidence!”
During the holidays, Zhao Zi had gone with Zhuang Qi to meet her family, including Zhuang Jingyuan and Gao Yuanxun. She had a good impression of the Zhuang family, including this cousin who wasn’t related to Zhuang Qi by bl00d.
Gao Yuanxun raised an eyebrow, her gaze settling on Gu Lingjun. “Xiao Zi, why are you the one accompanying Lingjun for her checkup today?”
Zhao Zi was outgoing but perceptive and didn’t mention Jiang Chuxie’s therapy visit, laughing instead. “Yeah, I was curious. I wanted to see what a prenatal checkup is like, get some experience.”
Gao Yuanxun gave a soft chuckle, a hint of exasperation in her smile. “You, always saying things like that. Xiao Qi even said she’d outdo me and give me a little niece.”
“Hmph, she wishes,” Zhao Zi pouted, then asked curiously, “Yuanxun-jie, you’re not just passing by, are you? Waiting for someone?”
Gao Yuanxun stood with her hands in her pockets, her posture relaxed, clearly not just passing through.
“Yeah, I’m here with a friend for her checkup… Lingjun, you’re done already?”
Gu Lingjun nodded. “I’m finished.”
“How’s everything? Is the baby healthy?”
“The doctor said everything’s fine. Thanks for your concern.”
Gao Yuanxun smiled lightly. “How are you getting back? Is someone picking you up, or are you taking a cab?”
“Chuxie’s coming to get us.”
“That’s good…” Gao Yuanxun looked at Gu Lingjun with a meaningful smile. “Zhao Zi’s here with you today, so I thought something might’ve happened between you and Chuxie.”
“Come on, what could happen between them? Their relationship is so good, I’m almost jealous. Jiang Chuxie’s only flaw is that she likes Lingjun too much and gets too nervous about her.”
“Oh, that’s a relief. It’s rare to find an Alpha as good and caring as Chuxie. Lingjun must be very happy, right?”
Gu Lingjun smiled and nodded, but she felt an odd, indescribable sensation.
Gao Yuanxun’s actions were never out of line, and she’d always been helpful and caring. Yet, from their first meeting, Gu Lingjun had felt that her words carried hidden meanings, her actions suggestive, as if she were trying to convey something.
“Chuxie’s great, but Yuanxun-jie, you’re an amazing Alpha too! Whoever marries you would be just as happy!”
Gao Yuanxun chuckled, a faint blush appearing on her fair face.
“Xiao Zi, flattery won’t get you anywhere.”
“I’m telling the truth!”
“Alright, alright, you’ve got a sweet tongue. I won’t keep you two—don’t know when Chuxie’s coming to pick you up.”
“See you, Yuanxun-jie!”
The two said goodbye to Gao Yuanxun, and Zhao Zi linked arms with Gu Lingjun as they left. Gao Yuanxun watched their retreating figures, her eyes narrowing slightly.
They were heading toward the therapy department, confirming the information she’d received.
How interesting. Not only was Jiang Chuxie far different from what she’d known, but even Gu Lingjun… She still couldn’t forget the shock this woman had caused her, that conversation that had upended her worldview.
Unfortunately, this time, Gu Lingjun seemed to remember nothing.
Gao Yuanxun took a deep breath—things weren’t as smooth as she’d imagined. Even with a fresh start, some changes had occurred beyond her knowledge.
But that’s what made it fun, right?
This time, she absolutely wouldn’t…
“Yuanxun…”
The consultation room door opened, and a petite woman stepped out. She wore a hat and mask, revealing only a pair of almond-shaped eyes. Her bare skin suggested she wore no makeup.
She seemed to be a Beta, as she carried no Omega pheromone scent, but her demeanor was closer to an Omega’s than a Beta’s.
“I’m here,” Gao Yuanxun said, wrapping an arm around the woman’s shoulders with concern. “How’s everything?”
The woman clung tightly to her arm, her voice trembling.
“One month…”
Gao Yuanxun gently pulled her into an embrace, a faint smile on her lips. “Jingyuan, what do you want to do?”
“I—” Zhuang Jingyuan’s mind was in chaos. “I don’t know…”
“I’ll take you home first, and we can think it over slowly, okay?”
Zhuang Jingyuan nodded, and Gao Yuanxun let out a soft breath. “Don’t overthink it. Some things might be fated. Instead of running from it, we should face it.”
By the time Zhao Zi and Gu Lingjun arrived, Jiang Chuxie was already out of the therapy session. For a therapy visit, it was surprisingly short.
“Lingjun,” Jiang Chuxie looked relaxed, smiling as she greeted them. “Zhao Zi, thank you.”
“No need to thank me,” Zhao Zi waved it off. “So… how’d it go?”
Jiang Chuxie didn’t mind her asking about her therapy, saying casually, “It’s fine. The doctor said I have prenatal anxiety.”
“Pfft, the doctor actually said that?”
Zhao Zi looked at Jiang Chuxie in surprise, but Jiang Chuxie just smiled without answering.
“Don’t listen to her nonsense,” Gu Lingjun shook her head. “Shall we head home now?”
Zhao Zi rolled her eyes at Jiang Chuxie. “Fine, fine. Joking around means you’re in good spirits. You two drop me off at school first.”
“You’re not going to Zhuang Qi’s?”
“Go for what? The ball game’s tomorrow, and I need to double-check the schedule, make sure there’s no conflict with other colleges, and confirm the class venue assignments. Zhuang Qi’s probably busy too. We’re just a pair of star-crossed lovers.”
“Alright, we’ll take you back to school first.”
“Oh, there’s one thing I think I should mention to you guys.”
Zhao Zi recalled something. Though it was a family matter, it was somewhat related to them, and she felt they should know.
“What’s that?”
“Dean Xu… Xu Wen, because of what happened, his reputation’s completely ruined. My grandpa didn’t want the Zhao family dragged down with him, so he had my little uncle divorce him recently.”
Gu Lingjun looked surprised—she never thought she’d hear that name again. But come to think of it, he was indeed Zhao Zi’s uncle’s husband.
Jiang Chuxie’s eye twitched, and she instinctively lowered her voice.
“I remember the follow-up investigation linked him to the person who drugged me. Didn’t the police detain him for further investigation?”
“Yeah, but they didn’t find anything conclusive. Basically, as a scholar, he’s done for, but his crimes weren’t enough to make him a criminal. After posting bail, the police let him go.”
Whether Zhao Zi’s grandfather had pulled strings was unclear, but Jiang Chuxie understood this was Xu Wen’s outcome.
“You think he’s a threat to us?”
“I haven’t seen what Xu Wen’s become, but my dad was there. He said Xu Wen’s like a beaten dog now, dangerously unstable, and told me to be careful. I figure he resents you two as much as he does me, so I’m giving you a heads-up.”
Zhao Zi’s father was the only Alpha among Zhao Zi’s grandfather’s sons, but he was born to a stepmother who died early. As a child, he was bullied relentlessly by his two older brothers. Later, when his brothers didn’t differentiate before adulthood and he became an Alpha, he became the most likely to inherit the family business, sparking major family conflicts.
The two brothers ganged up to ostracize Zhao Zi’s family, using every trick to gain leverage. Naturally, Zhao Zi wasn’t close to them.
Now, her eldest uncle’s son was in jail because of Gu Lingjun, her second uncle’s husband was ruined because of Jiang Chuxie, and Zhao Zi was friends with both. This had caused a storm in the Zhao family. Even Zhao Zi’s grandfather believed her family was “colluding with outsiders” to frame his two older sons and clear the way.
Zhao Zi hadn’t told them any of this, but her father was clear-headed.
“Thanks, Zhao Zi.”
“No big deal. Honestly, we’re the ones who should apologize. Xu Wen and Zhao Gang are my relatives, and you guys not blaming me is already generous. My dad’s let it go. The Zhao family’s stuff is more trouble than it’s worth—if it comes to it, we’ll walk away. He just wants me and Zhuang Qi to be happy and to value our friendship with you.”
It wasn’t a hard choice. Zhao Zi’s father and his brothers were, if not mortal enemies, at least irreconcilable. In contrast, Zhuang Qi, the second child of the Zhuang family—not the eldest or heir but the only Alpha in her generation—and Gu Lingjun, the Gu family’s only daughter with a powerful background, were far more promising. Jiang Chuxie, though lacking family backing, was co-running a thriving startup with Zhuang Qi, with a bright future.
Compared to the Zhao family’s century-old restaurant chain, steeped in tradition but poisoned by arrogance, corruption, and outdated ways, these young people were clearly more valuable.
