“…………”
What should I do?
That was all I could come up with in the end.
Haruki, who was looking at me now, was undeniably adorable.
But still, that wasn’t a good enough reason for what she was asking.
Obviously, Haruki is a minor. I can’t let her stay over at my place.
And taking her to a hotel? That’s completely out of the question.
Actually, don’t hotels even check IDs?

“Do you even understand what you’re saying, Haruki-chan?”
“I—I do! I’m not a kid, you know.”
“…………”
Even Haruki couldn’t keep her cool this time—her ears had turned red.
Despite the makeup, it was obvious.
That only made it clearer to me how serious she was.
What should I do?
To be honest, the real issue wasn’t that she was underage.
Well, that was a problem, but there was something even more important.

Ah… I see now.
That’s what this was all about.

“Haruki-chan.”
“W-What?”
“Thank you.”
More than anything else, I needed to say that first.
So, I bowed my head.

“W-What are you saying? I… I just—”
“You’re trying to keep me from killing myself, aren’t you? That’s why you’re doing all this.”
________________________________________
“Yeah… you’re right.”
With a slightly sad look, Haruki nodded.

It had been about two days since I broke up with Fuyumi when Haruki came to see me. That in itself wasn’t strange—anyone could see I was a wreck.
Fuyumi cheated on me. Told me she wanted to break up.
My heart had completely shattered.
If Haruki hadn’t come… I probably would’ve taken my own life.
________________________________________
At first, she probably just wanted to check in on me. But when she stepped into my room, she saw it—the open window, and the balcony beyond.
She’s not stupid. She knew exactly what that meant.
________________________________________
She didn’t want to leave me alone. She wanted me to find some kind of hope. That’s why she decided to stay—and cooked for me.
I’m sure that wasn’t part of her original plan.

“Yeah,” Haruki added, “it just happened that your fridge was well-stocked. If not, we might’ve had to go out grocery shopping together.”

She helped fill in the blanks.

“And then, after we ate together, you thought, ‘I still can’t leave him alone.’ So, you invited me out—you called it a date, to get me out of that room.”
If I had been in her position, I would’ve done the same. And if she hadn’t invited me out and I was left alone in that room again…
There’s no guarantee I wouldn’t have ended it.
There’s another reason she tried to get me out of that room—one I haven’t mentioned out loud because I don’t want to think about it.
The furniture. The little bits of trash. Every part of that room was soaked in memories of Fuyumi.
To me, that place had become nothing but a trauma minefield.

“I bet you would’ve forced me to go even if I refused. Something like, ‘What, are you trying to embarrass me?’”
“How do you know that?”
“Just sounds like something you’d say.”
“Well… fair.”

Haruki touched her chin, thought for a second, then seemed to accept it.
________________________________________
“In any case, Haruki-chan, your plan worked perfectly. I spent the whole day with you, had fun, and honestly… I barely thought about Fuyumi.”
“Barely, huh… She’s still strong, isn’t she?”
________________________________________
Her voice turned cold only when she said that woman.
Not the aloof tone she used when playing around. This was different—laced with contempt and hatred.
Or maybe… there were other, deeper emotions in it too. I couldn’t tell.

“So, in the end, you didn’t want to leave me alone in that room, and that’s why you said you wanted to stay the night.”
________________________________________
She said she understood what that meant.
She was willing to give her body, if that’s what it took to stop me from dying.
I still don’t know why she’d go so far.
Because I saved her once when we were kids? Out of guilt over what her sister did?
Either way, it feels like too much.
But maybe… maybe it’s not my place to say that.
There are probably people out there who’d say I overreacted too—that getting dumped isn’t worth dying over.
What matters is that she saved me—and I need to properly thank her for that.
And then—

“But it’s okay now, Haruki-chan. You’ve done more than enough.”
“B-But… that’s not… I-I just… I don’t want to leave you alone again…”
________________________________________
Maybe she was shaken because I saw through her plan. Maybe she thought I’d still try to kill myself.
Whatever the case, she didn’t even try to keep up her usual “gyaru” slang anymore.

“Then… promise me something.”
“A promise?”
“Let’s go on another date next week. Promise me that, and I won’t die.”
“A—”
________________________________________
That’s just how it should be.
If you’ve had your first date, you have to ask for the second.
Otherwise, you can’t call yourself a man.
More than that, I needed to show her—
________________________________________
“I want you to see that I still believe in tomorrow. I’ll show you through my actions. So don’t worry.”
________________________________________
I just wanted Haruki to be at peace.
________________________________________
“Geez… I guess I can’t win, huh?”
________________________________________
Haruki gave a bittersweet smile—
________________________________________
“Okay. I promise.”

And nodded.
