- Episode 14 - A phone call from an ex-girlfriend
“Hey, Fuyumi, why don’t you go back to your parents’ place for a while?”
It had been a week since I moved into Natsuyama-senpai’s apartment when he suddenly said that to me.
“Huh? Why?”
“Well, I just think the timing feels right, you know? Like, your mom must be worried about you and all.”
“That might be true, but…”
The word “timing” stuck with me, but I decided not to press the issue. I knew better than to question him too much—it would just put him in a bad mood. At least that much, I’d learned.
“Anyway, just go home for a bit. I’ve got some things I want to take care of.”
“What kind of things?”
“Things I want to do, that’s all. You don’t need to know the details.”
“R-right…”
With that, I couldn’t argue anymore. I reluctantly picked up my phone to make the call.
I don’t usually talk on the phone much. Or rather, I didn’t used to. Back when I first started dating Kengorou, we’d talk on the phone every night. But with Natsuyama-senpai, we mostly used messaging apps. So, in the end, I didn’t have many reasons to make calls anymore.
“Hello? Fuyumi?”
“Hi, Mom… I was thinking I’d like to come home for a bit.”
“Oh? Did something happen with Kengorou-kun?”
“Huh? N-no, not really. Why do you ask? Did he say something to you?”
“From Kengorou-kun? No, I haven’t heard anything.”
I let out a small sigh of relief.
So, he hadn’t said anything. That meant I was safe… for now.
“I see. Then I’ll come—”
“No, don’t bother.”
“Huh? What do you mean ‘don’t bother’?”
“I mean you have no right to come here.”
Her voice turned cold—frigid, even. I could feel my lips drying up.
She said she hadn’t heard anything from Kengorou. So then… who else?
“Did you hear something from Haruki?”
“I heard everything.”
I felt despair begin to crash down on me.
“M-Mom…?”
“Why on earth would you think I’d be on your side?”
“B-but I’m your daughter—”
“Exactly. I am your mother.”
Her tone was like ice as she spat out the words.
“That’s exactly why I can’t take your side.”
“W-what do you mean?”
“To me, Kengorou-kun is practically a son. Your father feels the same way.”
The mention of him sent a chill through me. When Mom says that man, she means one person only—my father. Her husband.
“D-does Dad know about this?”
“Not yet. I haven’t told him. I didn’t want to cause unnecessary pain to Kengorou-kun. But once he’s recovered, we’ll have to tell your father everything…”
“……”
“Tell me—what were you thinking?”
“W-what do you mean?”
“You and Kengorou-kun had even met each other’s parents. How could you betray someone like that?”
“I… I…”
“Breaking up isn’t the problem, you know. You weren’t engaged. You’re both adults. If you both agreed to end things, that would’ve been fine. Kengorou-kun isn’t the only man out there.”
“Y-yeah…”
“But because of that, I can’t forgive you. Tell me—why did you betray him like that?”
“I… I don’t know…”
I choked on the words. What could I say? What would make this okay? How could I make things right without getting yelled at? I didn’t know. I didn’t know anything anymore.
“Sigh… That’s enough. In any case, don’t come home. Not for a while.”
“O-okay. But for how long?”
“Until Kengorou-kun recovers. Or rather… until you help him recover.”
“Huh?”
“And one last question—just one more. Is that okay?”
“…W-what is it?”
I tensed, not knowing what she would ask next.
“Why did you betray that child, too?”
“…That child?”
Who was she talking about? For a second, I thought she meant Kengorou, but the tone didn’t match. Not my mom or dad either… Then—could she mean Haruki?
No way. Haruki had nothing to do with this. She was just a bystander.
“You don’t even know who I’m talking about, do you?”
“I-I…”
“Whether you’re oblivious or just refusing to see it, there’s someone who was hurt badly by what you did. Remember that. Just… don’t come here anymore.”
“W-wait, Mom. If I can’t come home, I’ve got nowhere to go—”
“Then maybe you can stay with your affair partner.”
And with that, the line went dead.
I sank to the floor, dazed and trembling.
What now? What am I supposed to do?
I’d made my mother furious. And now she said it was only a matter of time before my father found out too.
That would be a disaster.
That couldn’t happen.
“What… what am I going to do…”
No answer came back.
