- Episode 15 - Cat Cafe
“Whoa.”
“Wow, this is amazing!”
As we passed through the wooden gate, we were met by a sea of cats—cats everywhere.
On the floor, on the walls, climbing the cat towers—cats filled every corner of the space.
I’d never been to a cat café before, but this was pretty much exactly how I imagined it would be.
“Hey, hey, mister! Look! There are so many cats!”
“Yeah… there really are.”
Haruki’s blue contact-lensed eyes sparkled as she tugged on my sleeve, using her other hand to point around the café.
“You’re not very excited. Don’t tell me… you don’t like cats?”
“No, it’s not like that.”
I quickly corrected the misunderstanding.
It wasn’t that I disliked animals—far from it. I actually liked them a lot.
Someday, I’d even like to have a pet. Though realistically, with work in the future, I might not have the time for it.
Anyway, the truth is—I love cats.
If anything, I was just a bit overwhelmed by this surreal little paradise.
Cats and a cute girl—it’s like heaven on earth.
“Welcome! Please follow me to your seats.”
“Okay~!”
A friendly-looking staff member guided us to a two-person table.
It was a small café, and besides us, there were no other customers—just cats and staff.
I ordered a coffee, and Haruki got an orange juice.
Along with our drinks, they brought over a plastic container filled with some fibrous white stuff.
“What’s this?”
“That, sir, is chicken tenderloin—for the cats.”
“Pfft!”
Haruki burst out laughing from across the table.
“Hahaha! You’re hilarious! You looked so serious staring at that and going, ‘What is this?’”
“You’re laughing way too much.”
I sighed.
Still, it was nice to see her having so much fun. That was part of Haruki’s charm, I supposed.
“Well, for what it’s worth, you looked cool being all serious about it.”
“That can’t be true.”
Even if I hadn’t opened the box, staring intently at shredded chicken like it was some mystery ingredient definitely wasn’t “cool.”
I kept that snarky comment to myself.
“…It’s not a lie though,” she mumbled.
I wasn’t sure if she was talking to me or to herself—it got lost in the sea of meows.
“The session lasts for an hour. Is that okay with you?”
“Yes!” we answered in unison.
“Great! Please enjoy your time. If you need anything, just call using the tablet at your table.”
The staff member gave us a warm smile and returned to the counter.
Maybe working in such a soothing environment like a cat café naturally made people kinder.
“Hehe, we finally made it.”
“Yeah, we did.”
Seeing Haruki smile made me relax too.
Apparently, I wasn’t one to talk about people getting carried away either.
“Aww, they’re so cute…”
The moment we opened the case of food, cats swarmed us all at once.
They split into two groups—some gathered around me, others around Haruki.
Wait a second… didn’t she have way more cats around her?
Oh well. That was probably to be expected.
“Whoa, whoa! There’s so many of them! What do I do, mister?”
“You’re panicking too much. It’s fine, don’t worry.”
I chuckled as I watched Haruki flail slightly in confusion.
Meanwhile, I gently picked up the nearest cat, its fur a snowy white.
“You’re not used to handling cats, are you?”
“You think so?”
I mean, sure—I had done some volunteer work with rescue cats before.
This wasn’t too different.
“I don’t think it’s that hard, honestly. Cats in cafés are usually used to people.”
Any cats that were aggressive toward people probably wouldn’t be allowed in a café in the first place.
That said, Haruki only struggled for a moment before she had a black cat curled up on her lap, stroking it with a big smile.
“Aww, aren’t you just the cutest widdle thing?”
“Yeah… super cute.”
Watching her cuddle the cat with sparkling eyes, I found myself petting the one in my lap too.
A gal and a cat. Or a beautiful girl and a cat.
It was an overload of cuteness.
“Oh, hey, they said we’re allowed to take pictures here.”
“Oh really? That’s great!”
Haruki took out her phone and started snapping pictures of the cats.
I followed suit and took a photo of a cat napping atop a cat tower.
Then, suddenly—
“Say cheese, mister!”
“Huh?”
Caught off guard, I instinctively threw up a peace sign with my left hand.
“See? It turned out great!”
She showed me the photo: a shot of me frozen mid-reaction, eyes wide in surprise.
“Wait, isn’t this photo just of me?”
“Of course it is—I was taking a picture of you.”
“Fair point.”
Now that she mentioned it, there’s no way I was trying to get the cat to pose with a peace sign.
“Alright then. My turn—let me take one of you, Haruki.”
“Sure! Go ahead.”
Through the lens, I saw her smiling, gently teasing the cats as they played around her.
Watching that, I felt a quiet warmth fill my chest.
And then I pressed the shutter.
