- Episode 21 - A New Part-Time Job
After that, we kept on singing.
I’ll spare you the details.
If I had to say something, it’d be this: out of the three of us, I was definitely the worst singer.
I was bad, Koyomi was average, and Haruki was actually really good.
I hadn’t really noticed it before, but she has a beautiful voice.
When she sings, it feels a little different—soothing, even.
Who knows how many rounds we went through.
There was a soft clink—the sound of ice clashing inside a glass.
I only realized a moment later that it came from Koyomi putting her drink down on the table.

“By the way, Koyomi-chan, what are you going to do about your part-time job?”
That’s when it clicked.
This was what Koyomi had really wanted to ask me today.

“I’m quitting.”
“Figured. I mean, with that guy around, who wouldn’t? I’ve been thinking of quitting myself.”

“The pay’s good, and the head instructor’s a decent guy…” she continued, trailing off.
Yeah, it’s not like I hated the place either.
I got along well with a lot of people there—especially Koyomi.
But I just can’t forgive Natsuyama.
I don’t want anything to do with him, or with any place connected to him.

“Sorry about this. Could you let the head instructor know I feel bad about leaving?”
“I doubt he holds anything against you. But sure, I’ll tell him.”

Koyomi let out a sigh, one that sounded a little resigned.

“So, what now? You planning to get a new job?”
“No, I’m quitting for good.”
“I mean, aren’t you going to start another job or something?”
“Nah, there’s no real reason to.”

I hate to sound conceited, but my family’s pretty well-off.
They cover my tuition and living expenses.
So why did I have a part-time job in the first place?
Simple: spending money—basically all of which went toward Fuyumi.
Date expenses, gifts, travel—the usual.
Relationships cost money.
But Fuyumi and I are done.
Which means… there’s no real need for me to work anymore.

“Wait, don’t you live alone?”
“Oh, right. Yeah, I still need to pay rent.”

I moved out in the first place to spend more time with Fuyumi.
She brought over her things, and before long, we were basically living together.
But now that’s all over.
Technically, I could move back home, no problem.
Though, I still need to cover this month’s rent.

“Um…”
“Hm? What’s up, Haruki-chan?”
“Well, actually, there’s this one part-time job I know of…”
“A job?”

A high school girl offering job leads?
What would it be—cleaning or something?
There were jobs like that at my old school.
But somehow this didn’t seem like that.

“Me.”
“Huh?”

For a second, I didn’t understand what she meant.

“I mean, would you be my tutor?”
“…Huh!?”
“Oh, that’s a great idea!”

I couldn’t help blurting out a weird noise.

“No, hold on. I’d feel awful taking money from you like that.”
“I’m not going to cram school anymore. And with exams coming up, I think it’d be good to have some kind of support outside of school.”
“I appreciate the thought, but I can’t let you go that far for me…”
“You’ve got it all wrong. I’m not doing this for you. I just want someone to help me study. My dream school is J Medical University, just like yours.”
________________________________________
Well, technically, I am a student at J Medical University, so I guess this isn’t completely out of line.

“And also… I just feel like, if you were the one helping me, I’d be able to work a lot harder.”
“Well… if that’s how you feel…”

I found myself at a loss for words.
