- Episode 27 - College Friends
I went back to university for the first time in a while.
I’d been out sick, but honestly, my attendance was starting to get dangerously low.
More than anything, though—I’d finally started to feel like myself again.

“Yo, Akishima! Long time no see!”
“Ahaha, Enomoto. Yeah, it’s been a while.”
A well-built guy plopped down next to me and gave my shoulder a few hard slaps.
His name is Enomoto Marco—a bit of a close-talker type.
He’s not mixed or anything; apparently, his parents just liked Italian culture and gave him that name.
We’ve known each other since the start of university, so it’s been four years now.

“Heyyy, I was worried about you too, y’know~”
“Thanks, Takane.”
The girl with the soft, wavy hair next to Enomoto looked genuinely relieved as she spoke.
Her name is Takane Honoka.
She’s our classmate—and Marco’s girlfriend.

“Still, man, I was shocked. I never thought you would skip lectures because of being sick.”
“Even I get sick sometimes, you know.”
To be fair, it was more of a mental health thing than a physical one. But I wasn’t about to start splitting hairs.

“Right? I mean, you’re nothing like me or Marco. We skip class all the time, but you?”
“You two skip too much. Just so you know, you’re both on the edge attendance-wise. One more missed class, and it’s straight to repeating the year. Kidneys or not.”
I jabbed a finger at them—throwing in a little warning while I was at it.
At our university, if you don’t attend at least two-thirds of your classes, you’re not allowed to take the exam.
And without exams, you can’t earn credits—which means repeating the year.

“A-Ahaha… o-of course we’ll make it to the rest of the classes.”
“I hope so.”
“By the way, Akishima-kun, I have a favor to ask~”
“What is it?”
“I kind of fell asleep during yesterday’s class… so could you teach it to me? Me and Marco?”
“That’s definitely not something you should be asking me!”
I missed the class too! If anything, I should be the one asking!

“But hey—where’s Fuyumi-chan?”
“……”
The air froze.
No, that’s not right.
I froze the air.

“Ah—no, I mean… sorry.”
“U-Um, anyway… why don’t we grab lunch?”
The two of them paused for a moment, then awkwardly forced the conversation in another direction.
I wonder—what kind of expression was I making just now, standing there in front of them?

“…Actually, if you don’t mind, I’d like you to hear me out.”
“You sure? You want to talk about it?”
“Yeah. Please.”
Say what you will, Marco’s always had my back.
Even though I’ve spent four years cleaning up after his constant antics, I’ve never once thought about cutting ties with him—and it’s moments like this that remind me why.

“Okay, I’m in. But since we’re out, let’s eat something while we talk.”
“Yeah. That sounds good.”

“So yeah, that’s what happened. In short, Fuyumi and I broke up.”
I told them everything—how I’d walked in on her cheating and how she ended things on the spot.

“I see…”
“……”
Both Marco and Honoka looked like they didn’t know what to say.

“Don’t worry about me. Honestly, taking those two weeks off helped me clear my head. I’m at a point now where I can talk about it like this.”
“…Got it. Makes sense.”
“……”
Marco nodded solemnly.
Honoka, looking a bit pale, nodded too.

“But man… that was Natsuyama-senpai, right?”
“Yeah… it was.”
“What?”
Marco and Honoka exchanged glances and gave each other tight-lipped, uncomfortable smiles.
I really wish they wouldn’t drift into their little world like that. It’s super awkward for me.
