- Episode 28 - Decision to part ways
At the campus cafeteria, I found myself listening to a story about Natsuyama.
Marco took a huge bite of his shrimp tempura, swallowed, and began his explanation.

“You know Natsuyama’s the captain of the soccer team, right?”
“Yeah, I know.”

The soccer team at J Medical University is strong. They’ve achieved great results in the East Japan Medical Student Tournament (known as the Higashi-I), and most of that success is credited to Natsuyama’s leadership—a well-known fact on campus.

“Well, apparently, Natsuyama’s been dating three girls at the same time within the soccer team.”
“Three…?”

I was speechless. My fork, wrapped in meat sauce pasta, slipped from my hand and clattered onto the tray.
Is that even physically possible?
Though I didn’t want to remember, my thoughts went back to my time with Fuyumi.
Even while juggling studies, I had tried to make as much time as I could for her.
Just loving one woman—only her—had pushed me to my limits.
Not that I ever considered it a burden.
But if you asked me whether I could’ve done that with two or three women at once—well, that’s an entirely different story.

“Yeah, no way that’s doable.”
________________________________________
It’s just not possible.
The only reason I was able to do it at all was because I genuinely loved Fuyumi.
Up until a few days ago, I thought Natsuyama was just “the scumbag who stole someone else’s girlfriend.”
But in reality, it was far worse.
Natsuyama wasn’t just someone who couldn’t stay loyal—he was the worst kind of person who went after anyone and everyone without a second thought. A total piece of trash.

“Seriously, what a garbage human being…”
“Totally scum.”
“He’s not just the enemy of women—he’s the enemy of everyone.”

Marco slurped his soba as he muttered bitterly, and Honoka, chewing her udon, echoed her anger.
Honestly, I didn’t blame them. The story was just that awful.
At this point, I even felt a bit sorry for Fuyumi.
She probably had no idea.
She was always a little absentminded and didn’t tend to overthink things.
In other words, she probably believed Natsuyama only loved her.
But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The fact that someone could be dating three girls at once—within the same club, no less—and it hadn’t come out until now was baffling enough, but it was clear that a guy like that was incapable of loving anyone.
Well, maybe this is just the price she has to pay. Actions have consequences.

“In the end, it just means we should steer clear of people like that.”
“Lesson learned… big time.”
“Exactly. But hey, you’re not going to see them again anyway, so isn’t that good enough? I mean, unless you want to do something about it. If so, I’ll help.”
“Help?”
“Yeah. If you want revenge or something, I’ll totally help you out.”

Despite her soft and dreamy demeanor, Honoka wasn’t someone who could be underestimated.
In reality, she was more stubborn than anyone I knew.
She held her ground when it mattered.
“That’s what makes her so great,” Marco often said.
Whenever the four of us—me, Marco, Honoka, and sometimes Fuyumi—went out drinking, Marco would inevitably end up bragging about her.
Anyway, my answer was already decided.

“Nah, I’m not going to do anything.”
“Hmm.”
“You’re really okay with just letting it go?”
“Yeah. I don’t want anything more to do with them.”

To be honest, after hearing all this from the two of them, I realized something important:
Natsuyama is like a completely different species.
He operates on an entirely different moral code—if he even has one.
There’s no point in asking a beast whether something is right or wrong. It’s meaningless to even try to engage.

“Instead, I’ve decided to focus on things that matter. My own version of revenge, you could say.”
“Revenge?”
“What kind of revenge?”
“To put it simply—I’m going to live a life so happy, so fulfilling, that they won’t even cross my mind anymore.”

Yes, I was cheated on. Betrayed by the person I loved most.
In the end, I was dumped and lost everything—or so I thought.
But the truth is…
I still have my family.
I haven’t told them about Fuyumi yet, but I know they’ll support me when I do.
I have friends.
Marco, Honoka, Koyomi—they’ve all said they’re here for me, and just those words alone have been enough to save me.
And most importantly…
There’s a girl—someone who reached down into the pit I’d sunk into, pulled me up, and helped me stand again.

“That’s why I won’t look back anymore. From now on, I’m only looking forward. I’m moving toward the future. Because I believe that is the best revenge.”
“Yeah… I get that.”
“If that’s what you want, then it’s probably the best way.”

I sprinkled a generous helping of grated parmesan on my remaining pasta and took the final bite.
Yeah—delicious.
Sometimes, a little change in flavor makes all the difference.
Marco and Honoka both nodded in agreement, looking genuinely moved.

“Well then! Since we’re on the topic, how about you tell us your new romantic story, Kengorou-kun?”
“Wait—what?”
“You’ve got one, right? A story like that?”
“Wha—?”

How did they figure that out?

“You’re way too easy to read, you know.”

(And just like that, they saw right through me.)
