- Episode 52 - Report of the Incident
“As for Fuyumi, you won’t be seeing her again.”
“…Well, yes. I suppose not.”
I nodded without needing Tokishirou-san to tell me that.
“Fuyumi’s finished her hospital training. All that’s left is graduation. She has no reason to return to campus anymore.”
“Exactly. And to add to that, even after she starts working, you won’t be seeing her again.”
“Really?”
As far as I knew, Fuyumi had secured a job at the university hospital after graduation.
Since I’d be starting my own hospital rotation next year, I had assumed we’d inevitably cross paths again.
“Ah, I pulled some strings. She’ll be working at a hospital in another prefecture. Depending on where you end up, the two of you likely won’t meet again.”
According to Tokishirou-san, the hospital he placed her at was chronically understaffed. He himself works there part-time, apparently.
He forcibly arranged for Fuyumi to be assigned there.
He said it was a toxic workplace, with constant interpersonal issues causing newcomers to quit almost immediately.
She’s being thrown into that mess, and under his watchful eye, she won’t be able to quit.
Fuyumi is about to experience hell.
…In another prefecture, far away from me and Haruki, there would be no more contact. That much was clear.
“Um… may I ask something?”
“What is it?”
I turned my gaze to both Tokishirou-san and Setsuko-san.
“I just… I don’t understand why you’re going this far with Fuyumi. Also, where is she now and what is she doing?”
Unconsciously, I called her “Fuyumi-san.”
That in itself made me realize just how little she meant to me now.
Well, that’s fine.
What matters more is the question lingering in my mind.
To me, Fuyumi is just someone from the past.
Could it be… did something happen between her and Haruki?
“The other day, while you and Haruki were together, Fuyumi tried to approach you.”
“…What?”
I couldn’t make sense of it.
Why?
She was the one who threw me away.
Why now?
I turned to Haruki, who simply nodded in silence.
It made no sense, but it had really happened.
“After that, Haruki and Setsuko managed to restrain her, so things didn’t escalate. But after hearing what she said, I realized we had a serious problem on our hands.”
“May I ask what exactly she said?”
“Mostly insults—directed at you and Haruki. She called you a traitor and Haruki a homewrecker.”
“What!?”
I shot to my feet before I even realized it.
Who did she think she was to say something like that?
At the very least, she had no right to speak that way about Haruki—the person who helped me, pulled me out of the darkness, and brought me back to life.
Sure, I’ve heard that sometimes the one who cheats ends up crawling back to the one they betrayed.
But where’s Natsuyama in all this?
Did she dump him too? Or was it the other way around?
Either way—it’s unforgivable.
Not just for what she did to me, but for involving Haruki too—
Suddenly, I felt a tug on my sleeve.
I looked down and saw Haruki, still seated politely, gently holding onto me.
“Onii-san, I’m okay. Really.”
“…Sorry. And thank you.”
I was overwhelmed with gratitude for everything.
Even though Haruki had taken the brunt of the abuse, she was smiling, trying not to let the pain show.
“So, where is Fuyumi now?”
“For now, she’s staying at one of the Ayase family’s villas. It would be problematic if something happened after we simply cut her loose.”
Apparently, they had no choice.
The risks of letting her roam free outweighed the complications of confining her.
I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for them.
It’s not like they’d done anything wrong.
As I was thinking that, my silence must’ve been taken the wrong way.
Tokishirou-san spoke again.
“If you think we’re going too easy on her, we can do more—like cancel her job offer, or even expel her from the university altogether.”
“No, it’s fine.”
Honestly, what I felt toward Fuyumi now wasn’t anger or hatred—it was indifference.
Of course, I haven’t forgiven her betrayal.
Those memories are still painful and bitter.
But I don’t want revenge, and I have no intention of getting it.
My reach is limited—my time, my capabilities, everything.
Through all this, I’ve come to truly understand just how small and powerless I am.
And that’s exactly why I want to use whatever strength I do have to help someone… to share happiness instead of spreading pain.
“As long as Fuyumi-san stays away from me and Haruki, I have nothing more to say.”
“…I see.”
“Besides, if she were to be expelled or lose her job again, she might come back with resentment and try something worse.”
Fuyumi’s not exactly someone who thinks things through.
Once she starts working, she’ll be too busy to bother with us anyway.
“That’s true. I understand.”
“Just one last thing—may I ask for a condition?”
“What is it?”
“Please, never let Fuyumi-san into this house again. This is a precious place for Haruki-chan.”
“…Thank you. And I’m sorry.”
Tokishirou-san nodded solemnly and bowed in agreement.
