- Episode 54 - The Showdown with the Ex-Girlfriend
“Long time no see, sis.”
When I cautiously lifted my head, I saw my little sister standing there, looking down at me with cold, lifeless eyes.
She looked nothing like she did a month ago—when she saw me with Natsuyama-senpai.
Her hair was dyed blonde, she wore colored contact lenses, and her clothes were casual, even a little flashy.
I couldn’t believe it. She used to only wear neat, modest outfits.
What happened to her?
…No, that doesn’t matter.
I don’t care about the reasons.

“W-Why…?”
“Why?”
“Why were you with Kengorou?”
“…That’s what you’re most concerned about, huh.”
________________________________________
Haruki let out a deep sigh and turned to walk toward the house.
________________________________________
“We’ll cause a scene if we talk out here. Come inside. You can manage that, right?”
________________________________________
She tossed that over her shoulder and walked into the house.
Even seeing me struggling with crutches, she made no move to help.
We’re family. I’m injured.
How could she treat me like this?

“Ugh… ngh…”
________________________________________
Grinding my teeth at the sheer cruelty of it all, I pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Apparently, it had been left unlocked.

“I’m home…”
________________________________________
Even though I had finally come back after so long, no one welcomed me.
I made my way down the hallway toward the living room,
where I found two people waiting.
Haruki… and Mom.

“Fuyumi, why are you here?”
“……”
________________________________________
Haruki sat there, her face sullen and silent,
but her sharp eyes were locked on me.
________________________________________
“I-I…”
________________________________________
That’s when I told them everything.
How I had a falling out with Natsuyama-senpai and got kicked out.
How the hospital discharged me.
How I had no money, no one to take me in, and nowhere else to go.
________________________________________
“That’s why… I want to stay here. Please. I can’t survive otherwise.”
________________________________________
I pleaded with them, tears rolling down my cheeks.
But Haruki’s expression remained cold as ice.
________________________________________
“Even now… it’s still just about you, isn’t it? Do you even care what you did to Kengorou?”
“…Well, if you want to stay here, that’s your decision.”
“Mom…?”
“Mom?!”
________________________________________
Haruki and I said the exact same thing at the exact same time.
Though in Haruki’s voice, I could hear a sharp undertone of disapproval.
________________________________________
“But you can’t stay here. Go live at your father’s villa.”
“What?”
“W-Why?!”
________________________________________
Why would she suggest the villa?
The Ayase family owns several villas—technically, my father’s properties, though some predate even him.
As long as he gave permission, there’d be no issue with me living there.
________________________________________
“Listen. Kengorou still comes to this house, right? I don’t want him running into you.
He’s finally starting to heal. I won’t let him fall apart again.”
“What… are you saying he matters more to you than I do?”
“Of course I am. To me, he’s like a son.
And after the way you hurt him, I have no intention of ever forgiving you.”
________________________________________
Even my mother was looking down at me with those same cold eyes.
How can they look at me like that?
I’m their daughter. I’m family.
________________________________________
“That’s awful… That’s so awful!
And why is Kengorou even still coming here?! That’s what doesn’t make sense!”
________________________________________
Kengorou and I broke up.
So why would he still have a reason to come here?
________________________________________
“He’s my boyfriend now.”
“…What?”
________________________________________
For a second, I thought I misheard her.
But the moment I realized I hadn’t, a storm of rage tore through me.
________________________________________
“Y-You’ve got to be kidding me, traitor!
Why… why the hell would he be with you?!”
“Why? You’re seriously asking that?
You cheated on him with some loser and tossed him aside without a second thought—and now you’re acting like you’re the victim?”
“…!”
________________________________________
My body trembled violently.
She used to adore me.
She’d never raised her voice at me like this.
Now, Haruki was glaring at me with such fury,
I thought she might actually try to kill me.
________________________________________
“Kengorou tried to kill himself, you know?”
“…Huh?”
________________________________________
What was that?
No one told me that.
I didn’t know. I never heard anything like that.
________________________________________
“Because,”
“You don’t need to be told to understand how it feels… to be betrayed and abandoned by someone you love.”
“I… I didn’t…”
“It hurts so much to realize your feelings were worthless.
And when it wasn’t even your fault… that kind of betrayal is soul-crushing.”
________________________________________
She was right.
I betrayed Kengorou.
I threw him away… by my own choice.
________________________________________
“What have I done…”
________________________________________
I collapsed into a chair, dazed.
Had I really done something that terrible?
________________________________________
“I…”
________________________________________
Haruki muttered under her breath.
________________________________________
“I’ve loved Kengorou for a long time.”
“……”
________________________________________
I had no words to respond.
Because I already knew.
I always suspected he was her first love.
________________________________________
“But he only ever had eyes for you.
So I figured… I had to give up.
It was complicated, but… I still wanted to be happy for you two.”
________________________________________
Since middle school, Haruki had always used formal language with Kengorou.
It was her way of putting distance between them, of protecting herself from heartbreak, and of showing support for our relationship.
________________________________________
“But now… I’m not giving him up.”
________________________________________
She stared me down with unwavering resolve and declared it.
________________________________________
“AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!”
________________________________________
I screamed.
Because I’d lost everything.
And it was all because of me.
________________________________________
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!”
