Bai Qingyan closed her eyes. After a long while, she calmed herself, then picked up a chess piece from the chess box.
Chuntao and Chen Qingsheng bought the dough figurines. After talking downstairs for a while, they hurried upstairs to attend to their Eldest Miss.
“Eldest Miss, this servant bought many dough figurines, and there’s one for Eldest Miss! Look…” Chuntao bent down, holding a small figurine in front of Bai Qingyan, her smile bright, “Eldest Miss, look at this general on horseback. Doesn’t it look like Eldest Miss? So majestic!”
Bai Qingyan looked at the little figurine in Chuntao’s hand with its sword raised and felt a myriad of emotions.
With her current physical condition, it would be years before she could fight again.
As night fell over the city, the bell tower lit up with bright lights and the shops along the streets followed suit, illuminating the snow-covered capital with a warm red glow.
Tea houses and restaurants were brightly lit and prosperous with crowds of people. The long street was bustling with people coming and going. It was noisy and lively.
Chen Qingsheng spotted a carriage made of elm wood bearing the Zhenguo Duke residence’s Bai family’s emblem entering the city gates. After passing inspection, it drove slowly towards along the street, heading towards Manjiang Restaurant.
Chen Qingsheng rushed upstairs with his robes gathered in his hands, and said to Bai Qingyan who was eating wontons, “Eldest Miss, the carriage has entered the city!”
“Understood, you may go now!” she said. She pulled herself together and pressed a handkerchief to her lips, instructing, “Chuntao, open all the sliding panels.”
Chuntao responded and pushed open all the carved sliding panels that separated the corridor on the second floor.
Although she never met this cousin in person in the previous life, she had heard a lot about him. The reputation that the Bai family had painstakingly built was completely destroyed by his actions.
Bai Qingyan picked up her teacup and gripped it tightly, her eyes cold and sharp.
In this life, her cousin had not yet fallen under Prince Liang’s influence, so she was unsure of his character.
If he had a naturally good character, then… She would guide him carefully onto the right path.
If he was malevolent by nature, then she would seize this opportunity to use him to bolster the Bai family’s reputation, adding fuel to the fire. It could be considered that he would have contributed to the Bai family.
“Miss, your cloak!” Chunyan brought over the cloak to Bai Qingyan and helped her put it on.
Chuntao replaced the charcoal in the delicate silver plum-blossom hand warmer and handed it to Bai Qingyan.
Standing under the bright red lanterns in the corridor while holding the hand warmer, Bai Qingyan noticed Chen Qingsheng talking with Lu Ping downstairs. She turned her gaze towards the approaching carriage from the Zhenguo Duke’s residence, her expression calm and clear.
Inside the carriage, a beautiful woman lifted the curtain. She looked at the brightly lit capital city outside and was dazzled by the prosperous scene. Her heart pounded with excitement.
“Son, we’ve finally… entered the capital city!” The woman looked back at the young man lounging on the long seat inside the carriage, chewing on a piece of straw with his head propped up by one hand, “Once we’re in the Zhenguo Duke’s residence, your name will be recorded under the Second Madam. You’ll be a son of the Zhenguo Duke’s residence in the future! They say the mansion has 17 remarkable sons. From now on… There will be 18!”
Bai Qingxuan pulled the straw from his mouth and propped himself up with one hand, squinting his eyes, “I don’t want to go to any battlefield or whatever, or become the 18th son! I just like beautiful women. Mother, do you think the maids in the mansion are all beautiful?”
“Shut your mouth, you little kid!” The woman hastily dropped the curtain, her face pale as she glared at Bai Qingxuan, “Once you’re in the Duke’s residence, you must change your bad habits! The mansion isn’t like our village. Even if you tortured the tenant’s daughter to death, we could just give them money and let the matter drop! But if your grandmother, the Princess Dowager, and the Duke knew you were harming the maids in the mansion, you’d definitely lose your legs!”
Hearing this, Bai Qingxuan chewed on the straw. He lay back down with his hands behind his head and crossed his legs. “What’s the fun in going to the Duke’s residence then? I was freer in the village!”
“Can’t you just be a bit…”
Before the woman could finish, the carriage suddenly stopped. She stumbled and hit her head inside the carriage, crying out in pain.
Jolted in pain, Bai Qingxuan spat out the straw. His eyes were vicious. Not bothering to help his mother, he flung open the carved wooden door and grabbed the coachman’s hair, slamming his head against the rail and shouting fiercely, “What kind of blind dog are you to drive like this? Are you trying to kill this master?!”
The coachman’s head began bleeding instantly. Seeing Bai Qingxuan’s menacing and ferocious expression like a devil who wanted to devour people, the coachman collapsed to his knees, pleading for mercy, “Spare me, Young Master! Spare me, Young Master! It’s not that I’m blind, it’s just… A child suddenly ran out, and I was afraid I would hurt him!”
Standing on the upper floor, Bai Qingyan’s grip on the hand warmer turned her knuckles white. She was furious. Second Uncle… How could you have such a vile thing for a son?
Even if human nature was evil, even though she knew what Bai Qingxuan did in her previous life, she had not expected Bai Qingxuan to be this vicious and cruel at such a young age.
Bai Qingyan immediately regretted the decision to bring him back to the Zhenguo Duke’s residence. She should have ordered Shen Qingzhu to eliminate him the day she was reborn to prevent any future troubles.
Bai Qingyan’s murderous aura was unexpectedly released, startling Chuntao, “Eldest Miss?”
“We’re going downstairs,” Bai Qingyan said, taking a deep look at Bai Qingxuan before turning away.
Bai Qingxuan, who was crouching on the carriage, glanced at the crying child in the arms of an elderly woman in front of the carriage. He squinted his eyes and leaped off the carriage.
The coachman clutched his bleeding head and quickly moved aside on his knees for Bai Qingxuan, terrified of further repercussions.
Bai Qingxuan approached the old woman and child, towering over them with a sinister smile.
“The child… cough cough cough… The child was picking medicinal herbs for me, cough cough cough… Afraid the carriage wheel would crush the herbs wrapped in cowhide paper and that they won’t be usable anymore, he must have startled Young Master! Please, show mercy Young Master…”
The frail old woman was about to walk away with her grandson, but Bai Qingxuan kicked her down as soon as she got up. The child fell out of her arms and rolled on the ground. The old woman, panicked, called out the child’s name but was unable to get up before Bai Qingxuan stomped on her back, pressing down hard. The old woman could not withstand it and spat out a mouthful of blood, coughing violently.
The dirt-covered child clutched the herbs in his arms and cried out, “Grandma! Grandma!”
Bai Qingxuan applied all his weight on his right foot, stepping on the old woman. He bent down with a demonic expression, “Do I, a Young Master, have to get hurt for the sake of your medicine? Who gave you the guts to offend me?! I’m the young master of the Zhenguo Duke’s residence. If I get hurt, you, a lowly person… Even the lives of your entire family through nine generations up and down wouldn’t be enough compensation!”
Bai Qingxuan’s eyes were red and violent, scaring away the onlookers who had come to watch the scene.
By now, Bai Qingyan had descended the stairs. Hearing Bai Qingxuan’s words, her anger surged. She really had been possessed by the devil to have considered guiding this monster onto the right path.
Reaching the bottom step, Bai Qingyan’s face darkened as she called out, “Chen Qingsheng!”
Chen Qingsheng had some martial skills. Seeing Bai Qingyan’s stern expression, he immediately understood and stepped forward. With a few moves, he subdued Bai Qingxuan and pinned him against the carriage.
