- Chapter 12 - Trapped by Her Own Web
Upon arriving at Phoenix Sky Entertainment, Song Cheng headed straight for Hongxia’s office.
Hongxia was currently berating her two assistants, two young women who didn’t dare lift their heads, their hands clenched tightly in front of their stomachs.
Seeing this scene, Zhu Ke, who was following behind Song Cheng, instinctively shifted her feet, hiding behind Song Cheng.
Hongxia’s voice rose when she saw Song Cheng. “You still have the nerve to show your face here?”
Song Cheng walked expressionlessly to Hongxia, pulled out a chair, and sat down. To Zhu Ke, who was right behind her, she said, “Tell me, how has she been bullying you?”
Zhu Ke’s eyes welled up slightly as she nervously tugged at the corner of her dress. Her voice was barely audible. “Sister Song, it’s okay,” she said, glancing at Hongxia before quickly averting her gaze when their eyes met. “Maybe we should just leave?”
Before Song Cheng could respond, Hongxia sneered, “Don’t think those two trending searches make you a big shot. You dare put on airs in front of me? I’ve been too nice to you.”
Hongxia rolled up her sleeves and paced around the room, pointing a finger at Song Cheng. “Your breach of contract has enraged President Liu. He’s threatening to cancel the endorsement deal. You’re coming with me to apologize to him later. We have to get that deal back.”
Song Cheng stared at the finger waving incessantly in front of her face, her lips pressed into a thin line. As she drew closer, she swiftly grabbed the finger and twisted it with a gentle but firm motion. Hongxia’s ear-splitting scream, like that of a slaughtered pig, echoed through the office.
Even as Hongxia’s face contorted in agony, Song Cheng refused to release her grip. “Tell me,” she demanded, “how did she bully you?”
Zhu Ke was frantic, but under Song Cheng’s oppressive aura, she forced herself to speak. “Sister Hongxia told me to persuade you to shoot the endorsement. I knew you didn’t want to, so I…”
With a sharp tug, Song Cheng dragged Hongxia closer and pinched her cheek with her other hand. “What did I say yesterday?”
Hongxia struggled, but her body felt paralyzed, unable to muster even a shred of strength. Every hair on her body stood on end, and her voice trembled. “Y-you said you didn’t… didn’t want to.”
“And what did you do? Hmm?”
The increasing pressure on her cheek made Hongxia cry out in pain. “I-I was wrong! I won’t do it again!”
Song Cheng didn’t release her just because she admitted her mistake. Her eyes remained fixed on Hongxia’s mouth. “If you don’t learn to speak properly, I won’t hesitate to help you remove your tongue.”
Before the words had even finished leaving her lips, a dripping sound spread through the silent office. Then, a dark stain appeared on Hongxia’s crotch.
The two assistants huddled together, trembling uncontrollably, afraid to look at Song Cheng.
Standing behind Song Cheng, Zhu Ke was terrified. She opened her mouth to speak, but just then, Zhu Man, who had only been able to secure minor roles despite her two-year contract, walked by. Seeing the scene, she immediately stopped, first covering her mouth in shock, then raising her phone to record.
Knowing exactly what this footage would mean if it went viral, Zhu Man rushed forward to shield Song Cheng with her body. “Sister Zhu, we’re all colleagues here. Please don’t film this.”
Zhu Man ignored her plea, instead shouting loudly, “Everyone, come quick! Song Cheng is hitting someone!”
Song Cheng couldn’t care less about being filmed. She released Hongxia with a disdainful flick of her wrist, rose from her chair, and walked to the window, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. She glared coldly at Hongxia, who had finally straightened up. “You like to curse people, don’t you? Zhu Ke, time her. She’s not allowed to stop for five hours.”
Zhu Ke glanced at the growing crowd at the door and the sea of phones pointed their way. She frantically spread her arms, trying to block the view, but the effect was minimal. Gritting her teeth, she blurted out, “Sister Song had nothing to do with this! It was Hongxia! She’s always abused her position as manager, bullying junior assistants like me. She even secretly accepted endorsements and commercials for Sister Song without her consent. Sister Song…”
Before she could finish, Hongxia, having regained her composure, interrupted, “Zhu Ke, you’re fired. Get out of Phoenix Sky Entertainment now.” She straightened her back and glared at the crowd gathered at the door. “If this video leaks, none of you will ever get another resource from me.”
Her words had a significant deterrent effect, and the crowd quickly retracted their phones.
“Put your phones down and get out of here now!”
Something in her tone seemed to provoke Zhu Man. With a swift swipe of her finger, she innocently spread her hands. “Sister Xia, I’m so sorry. My hand slipped, and I accidentally sent the video.”
Hongxia flew into a rage, lunging to snatch Zhu Man’s phone, but Zhu Man dodged her.
Knowing Hongxia’s temper, Zhu Man immediately bolted forward. “Sister Xia, I forgot to mention—I sent it to all the group chats. Oh, and Shangtian Entertainment contacted me. They want to sign me as soon as my contract with Phoenix Sky Entertainment expires in two days.”
The unspoken message was clear: Your threats mean nothing to me now.
Hongxia’s teeth clenched in fury. She rushed back to her desk, grabbed her phone, and opened the Phoenix Sky Entertainment artist group chat. There it was—the video of Song Cheng humiliating her. She immediately used her administrator privileges to recall it.
She could retract messages in the group chat, but she had no such power over the video on her Moments.
Panicked, she paced in circles, then glared at Song Cheng, who seemed utterly unconcerned. “Are you genuinely stupid or just pretending? Once this video goes viral, all the buzz you’ve worked so hard to build will vanish in an instant. Even the production team will cancel their collaboration with you due to the negative publicity.”
Song Cheng straightened up, stepping away from the wall. Noticing Zhu Ke’s dazed state, she said, “That suits me just fine. I’ll owe you those five hours for now. I’ll personally supervise you when I have time.” She patted Zhu Ke’s shoulder lightly. “Let’s go.”
Zhu Ke snapped out of her trance and hurried to catch up.
Sensing Hongxia’s attempt to follow, Song Cheng glanced back. Hongxia immediately retracted her outstretched leg, her eyes blazing with fury. “You’ll regret this!”
“If you have so much time to spare, why not focus on salvaging what little dignity you have left?” Song Cheng paused, then added, “Good riddance. At least you won’t be around to cause trouble anymore.”
Hongxia: “……”
Zhu Ke: “……”
She’s got a point, doesn’t she?
Hu Tianyu, sitting in his office upstairs, saw the video circulating online and shot up from his chair. He immediately called the public relations department, desperate to contain the damage.
But he had underestimated Song Cheng’s recent surge in popularity. Within just half an hour, Zhu Man’s video had gone viral on social media, racking up tens of thousands of shares across multiple video platforms.
Left with no other choice, he convened an emergency public relations meeting.
“General Manager Hu, our only option now is to sacrifice the pawn to save the queen,” Zhang Xiaotian, the PR department manager, advised.
The moment the words left his mouth, everyone in the room nodded in agreement.
They could only protect either Hongxia or Song Cheng. Zhu Man’s video only showed the first half of the incident, ending with Zhu Ke’s statement. Once the controversy reached its peak, they would release the remaining footage showing Hongxia abusing her power to threaten the artists. This would swiftly clear Song Cheng’s name, catapulting her popularity to new heights.
Between a rising star with immense potential and a manager with a tarnished reputation, the choice was obvious.
Yet Hu Tianyu remained silent, his expression conflicted. In his eyes, Song Cheng was an untamed wild horse.
Even if such a wild horse became famous, it would bring little value to the company.
In an instant, Hu Tianyu realized that everyone has a weakness. Even if they couldn’t find Song Cheng’s, her rising fame would only benefit Phoenix Sky Entertainment, as she wasn’t their only artist.
With this clarity, Hu Tianyu snapped his fingers. “That’s it! We’ll do it!”
Phoenix Sky Entertainment could elevate Song Cheng to stardom, and they could just as easily plunge her into the mud.
By then, even if Song Cheng had three heads and six arms, she wouldn’t be able to escape the condemnation of public opinion.
Fueled by Phoenix Sky Entertainment’s efforts, Song Cheng once again topped the trending searches.
As before, online opinions remained sharply divided:
“This country bumpkin has no manners. Even if she weren’t her manager, she should show some respect to her elders.”
“Is the person above having a saintly moment? Didn’t you hear what the assistant said? Would Song Cheng have resorted to violence if the manager hadn’t gone too far?”
“No matter what, hitting someone is wrong. I’m waiting for updates on Song Cheng’s detention.”
“I can feel the pain through the screen! This country bumpkin hits way too hard. I strongly recommend kicking this violent hillbilly out of the entertainment industry.”
“I stand with Song Cheng on this. So what if she’s the manager? Does that give her the right to make decisions for Song Cheng without her consent?”
While the internet was in an uproar, Song Cheng sat cross-legged on the sofa, casually eating a banana and watching TV.
She had just discovered that modern television was far more captivating than the shadow plays of the mortal realm.
Song Yu entered to find her lounging on the sofa, looking utterly at ease.
Remembering the judgmental stares he’d endured on the way home, he pressed a hand to his forehead and sat down on the sofa opposite her. “Why did you hit Hongxia? Did you even hold back?”
Song Cheng swallowed her banana before replying slowly, “I just didn’t like her. She’s perfectly fine—no injuries will show.”
She wasn’t stupid. Knowing this era had forensic examinations and jail, she’d never give the police any grounds for arrest.
Song Yu’s breathing quickened, his voice tight with suppressed anger. “Song Cheng, you’re twenty-four! Can’t you act like an adult?” He paused the video on his phone, freezing the frame on Hongxia’s distorted face, then stood up and walked over to Song Cheng, tapping the screen. “If there’s no injury, why is she in so much pain?”
Song Cheng glanced at the screen and crooked a finger at Song Yu.
As he leaned in, she grabbed his face. A bone-chilling pain surged through his body, leaving him unable to scream.
Ignoring his glare, she slowly picked up her phone with her free hand, opened the camera, and snapped a photo of his contorted expression. Then she released him and tossed the phone onto the coffee table. “See for yourself.”
Freed from her grasp, Song Yu bolted away as if fleeing a plague, only stopping when he was certain she wouldn’t follow. He clutched his throbbing cheek, groaning, “Song Cheng, you’re trying to murder your own brother!”
“Why rely on explanations when you can experience the truth firsthand?” Song Cheng retorted.
Song Yu: “……”
If I ever meddle with this monster’s affairs again, I’ll be a dog, he vowed silently.
It hurts like hell.
Ring-ring-ring…
Annoyed by the incessant ringing, Song Cheng grabbed a nearby pillow and hurled it at Song Yu, who was examining his injury with his phone’s camera. “Shut up!” she snapped.
The pillow struck with such force that it knocked Song Yu flat onto the sofa. He finally snapped, scrambling to his feet. “Song Cheng, don’t push your luck! It’s your phone ringing, not mine!”
Song Cheng cleared her throat. “I didn’t hear it. Want to throw it back?”
Wang Guifang returned home to find Song Yu raising a pillow menacingly. She immediately roared, “Song Yu, stop bullying your sister!”
Song Yu: “……”
I suspect Song Cheng is doing this on purpose.
Before he could retaliate, Song Cheng reached for her phone and swiped the green icon. “Who is it?” she asked.
“Liu Zimang.”
Though the call wasn’t on speaker, Song Yu, standing close by, clearly heard the name. He leaned closer, curious about what Liu Zimang wanted with Song Cheng.
