Chapter 11: Now She Would Fight
The tide of passion had ebbed, and the darkness outside was churning like ink.
Yu Fu was awakened by an unfamiliar phone ringtone. It kept ringing, but no one answered. With great difficulty, she opened her weary eyes to find the entire bedroom plunged in darkness, save for the faint glare of light peeking out from the slightly ajar bathroom door, where the sound of running water could be heard.
The phone on the bedside table stopped ringing but then began to vibrate.
Yu Fu stared at it, her mind sluggish. Suddenly, it started ringing again, startling her. Her limbs felt like they had been disassembled and reassembled, aching and weak. Gritting her teeth, she managed to crawl to the edge of the bed and looked at the screen of the insistently ringing phone.
The contact name: Yu Han.
In that moment, Yu Fu felt like a guilty thief, quickly pressing the silence button. The persistent ringing finally stopped, not to resume. But her own agitated emotions refused to settle, her heartbeat pounding furiously, as if it would leap out of her throat.
At the bar, she had vaguely overheard Yu Han and Yuan Yi’s conversation, never imagining they would actually go through with it and ruin her purity. Thinking about it, she felt a prickle in her nose, scrunching it to hold back the welling sense of grievance. Her once-beloved relative had turned out to be so absurd.
Her life was already in shambles, and yet Yu Han was still unsatisfied.
Robbing her of the last shred of dignity.
Yu Fu’s supporting arm gradually grew weak and weary, and she lay back down on the large bed, sensing the lingering pungent smell of sex permeating the room, just like the events of the previous night, entangled in the air, unforgettably haunting her.
The bathroom water stopped running, and after a moment, the door pushed open.
Yu Fu heard the sound of slippers shuffling and frantically huddled under the blanket, her fearful gaze darting like a timid creature, briefly meeting his before hastily looking away.
Seeing her cowering behavior, it irked Yuan Yi. He picked up the phone from the bedside table without a word and left the bedroom.
Yu Fu strained her ears until she heard the muffled sound of the door closing outside, and her wildly beating heart gradually steadied, all the tension transforming into a long, drawn-out sigh. She hated Yuan Yi, but even more so, she hated Yu Han. Yet now that it had happened, any protest would be futile – she needed to make new plans.
Before, she had nothing because she didn’t fight or strive, didn’t she?
Well, now she would fight.
–
The night breeze dispersed the stuffy daytime heat, the coolness ruffling her skirt.
Yu Fu took a taxi home.
The spacious villa was brightly lit, but there was no sign of activity – they had already gone to sleep, without waiting for her return. If she had simply come home late due to other matters, it would have been fine. But the fact that she had been forced into a relationship haunted her, and now, hurrying back home, all she received was the usual indifference, without any warmth.
The tiny shred of hope she had for this family shattered.
Staring blankly at the empty living room, a light footstep sounded on the stairs. Yu Fu’s rigid eyes flickered, following the sound, first spotting the swaying hem of a silk nightgown, then the porcelain-like legs, and finally, a meticulously made-up face asking with concern, “Didn’t you say you’d be staying at the hotel? Why did you come back?”
Yu Fu couldn’t recall what they had discussed before getting drunk, but she was certain she hadn’t agreed to go to the hotel alone. In fact, she clearly remembered that it was Yu Han who had instructed Yuan Yi to carry her out of the bar.
She steadily met that beautiful face, which showed no hint of guilt. After a long pause, Yu Han’s gaze flickered, and a trace of discomfort crossed her features.
“The room was too big, and I felt a bit scared, so I just came back.”
Then, Yu Fu feigned a yawn. “Sister, you should go to bed early too.”
Watching her ascend the stairs, a flicker of suspicion crossed Yu Han’s eyes. She was certain that Liao Guiyun hadn’t come, but Yuan Yi had gone straight to that room, as he had promised her. Yet now, looking at the seemingly unruffled Yu Fu returning at night, there was no sign that she had been forced into a relationship.
Yu Han had stayed up late, worried Yu Fu would come back and cause a commotion.
Could it be that Yuan Yi hadn’t touched her?
Subconsciously, Yu Han wanted to call him to confirm, but then remembered that the bastard had been unreachable all night, neither answering her calls nor returning her messages – like a kite that had lost its string, whereabouts unknown. This hopeless waiting made her feel like she had never really controlled him.
Back in her room, Yu Fu closed the door and collapsed weakly onto the floor. Before leaving the hotel, she had straightened her dress, and there were no visible signs of being torn by a man. Luckily, it was a halter-neck style, fully covering the red marks Yuan Yi had left on her neck and chest, so Yu Han didn’t notice anything amiss.
But while the creases in her clothes had been ironed out, the wounds in her heart were impossible to heal.
Aided by the moonlight from outside, Yu Fu looked toward the open wardrobe, full of beautiful dresses. Gritting her teeth, she stood up and pushed the untagged door shut. Yu Han was right – these clothes didn’t belong to her. If all she wanted was to look pretty, even the most exquisite designs would be meaningless to her. What use were the clothes Liao Guiyun had bought? The ones that mattered were the ones that would allow her to rise above her class, the ones bought by Lu Xuezhou.
Yu Han had plenty of luxurious clothing and delicacies, but what she valued most was the ability to be with a man who could elevate her social status.
Well, Yu Fu would have that too.
This was a debt that Yu Han owed her, line by line.
