Chapter 16: Get In the Back
On a Sunday morning, Yu Fu went to the mall to buy a windbreaker. She no longer cared about how it looked; her priority was protection from mosquitoes and dust, as she had researched this type of photography activity online, which often required lying on the grass, so she needed something convenient to move around in.
She didn’t want Lu Xuezhou to think she was being fussy. After much deliberation, Yu Fu bought a set of oak gray, with black pants. Wearing it, she looked taller and more stylish, which was a side of her that usually didn’t show. She was very satisfied, and her smile was wide all morning, her heart filled with excitement and anticipation.
However, on the way home, she suddenly thought of a crucial problem. As Yu Han was Lu Xuezhou’s girlfriend, would she also be going tonight? Worried, she found the chat with Jiang Kanhui and confirmed: “Who’s all going tonight?”
Jiang Kanhui replied quickly: “You, me, my uncle, and Xuezhou.”
Yu Fu asked: “They won’t bring their girlfriends, will they?”
Jiang Kanhui responded: “My uncle doesn’t seem to have a girlfriend.”
Jiang Kanhui then added: “And our Xuezhou’s girlfriend is delicate and refined, she never participates in this kind of outdoor activity.”
From his replies, it was clear that he didn’t have a high opinion of Yu Han. But Yu Fu didn’t dare to be optimistic; she felt that it wasn’t that Yu Han gave a weak and delicate impression, but rather that Lu Xuezhou thought she couldn’t handle the hardship, so he didn’t let her come. Based on her understanding of Yu Han, if Lu Xuezhou invited her, she would gladly accompany him, no matter if it was climbing a knife mountain or descending into a fiery sea.
Turning this corner, Yu Fu’s lips curled up uncontrollably. It’s best if she doesn’t come, she would only be in the way.
She replied: “Okay, see you tonight.”
Thanks to Jiang Kanhui’s help, Jiang Siwei’s car would pick her up at the pre-arranged meeting point in the evening. They didn’t schedule to meet at home, as she didn’t want her family to know about her plans for tonight. But deceiving Yu Han was easy; as long as she gave the impression that she was not serious, it would be harder to explain to her parents. She had just arrived in the north city and didn’t have any trustworthy friends yet.
At half-past five, Yu Fu was restless, with half an hour to go before the agreed meeting time, and Yu Han was still in the living room, not going upstairs. Luckily, her parents weren’t home. After much hesitation, Yu Fu mustered the courage to speak to Yu Han, but was interrupted by the ringing of a phone.
It was a voice call from Yu Han.
It rang for a long time before being answered.
Her tone was coy: “Why did you take so long to answer the phone?”
There was only one person who could make her so soft. But she didn’t have the call on speaker, so Yu Fu couldn’t hear what Lu Xuezhou was saying. She pretended to casually look at her phone, and Yu Han knelt on the sofa next to her, her voice lingering: “It’s such a faraway place, do you want me to come with you?”
“…”
Whatever the other person said, Yu Han pouted, “Okay, then be careful.”
Yu Fu was playing a game on her phone, but her eyes were unfocused, and her fingers stiffly tapped the screen, making constant mistakes. She then heard Yu Han turn to her and say with a touch of sarcasm, “What are you taking your backpack for?”
“To… to do homework…”
Yu Fu pretended to tremble, looking at her with a nervous expression as if she had lied: “I made an appointment with Jiang Kanhui to have him teach me some problems…”
It was summer, and seven or eight o’clock in the evening wasn’t considered late. Moreover, the person she was meeting was Jiang Kanhui, so it didn’t matter much.
Yu Han’s gaze was ambiguous, “You and him seem to have a good relationship.”
Yu Fu lowered her head, “Just… normal classmates.”
Yu Han had no interest in listening, casually waving her hand, and said generously, “Go ahead, if Mom and Dad ask, I’ll tell them you’re busy studying and have already had dinner.”
“Thank you, sister.”
Yu Fu tightened the grip on her backpack, which didn’t contain any books, but the windbreaker she had bought. She couldn’t wear it at home, or Yu Han would see through her.
Sitting in the family car to the agreed meeting point, Yu Fu didn’t ask the driver to wait, and called him to go back first. As the familiar car disappeared, she finally felt at ease looking around the street, occasionally checking her phone for Jiang Kanhui’s message.
Soon, he sent: “I see you.”
Yu Fu looked up anxiously, and an ultra-tough off-road vehicle came driving towards her, jet black, like a bold stroke of ink in the mist-shrouded street, stirring her feverish heartbeat. She unconsciously took a step back, and the car stopped at the curb in front of her.
The car window rolled down, and Jiang Siwei glanced at her: “Get in the back.”
Yu Fu nodded, instinctively thinking Jiang Kanhui would be in the backseat, but as the door opened, with the faint light from the street, she saw a completely unfamiliar face. There seemed to be some irresistible factor in the air, drawing her to pause and look deeply inside.
The man also looked back at her.
His oily hair was swept back, revealing his cold brow and eyes, a pair of glasses on his nose, but there was no scholarly air, only a frigid chill like the frozen snow on the steep cliffs, keeping people at a distance.
Yu Fu’s heart suddenly raced.
Before seeing Lu Xuezhou, she wanted to seduce him; but now that she had seen him, she was afraid.
