Chapter 17: Warm Fingertips
Yu Fu didn’t expect Lu Xuezhou to be sitting in the back. When she saw him, she instinctively glanced at the two people in front. Jiang Kanhui, who was taking care of her, turned around and explained, “Xuezhou seems a bit unwell, so he’s resting in the back.”
But he had seemed fine when talking on the phone with Yu Han.
Yu Fu averted her gaze, politely nodding to Lu Xuezhou, but just a quick glance, then she looked away, quietly saying, “Excuse me… excuse me, could you move in a bit?”
She opened the car door, getting close to where he was seated.
The car was filled with dangerous people in front of her, and the neon-lit streets behind her, leaving Yu Fu feeling extremely insecure in the middle. Especially, she could feel Lu Xuezhou’s deep gaze constantly on her.
It went on long enough to make her heart pound thunderously.
“Why is it a girl?”
That chilling voice she remembered suddenly resurfaced, immediately reviving Yu Fu’s suppressed memories. It was the day she returned from the small county to her big city home, when she timidly went to greet her sister, only to be mocked and have her embarrassment and dishevelment immediately shared with her beloved boyfriend – the Lu Xuezhou sitting in front of her, cold as a mountain stream.
Yu Fu couldn’t help but feel a bit flustered, looking at the driver’s seat where Jiang Siwei was, her gaze conveying that he had not properly explained things to Lu Xuezhou in advance. Yet, Jiang Siwei had an indifferent attitude, “Who said she was a man?”
Jiang Kanhui also didn’t understand where the misunderstanding for Lu Xuezhou came from.
Only Yu Fu realized it belatedly.
Her ears flushed red with embarrassment as she looked at the impassive man, timidly explaining, “I… I had my WeChat profile set to male, because in the past some classmates would constantly harass me, so I forgot to change it back…”
When she was just starting high school, she had encountered perverts randomly adding her to groups and harassing her. Later, she had the brilliant idea to change her avatar and gender, and her phone instantly became peaceful. She had gotten used to this comfortable arrangement and never had the awareness to change it back.
Hearing the explanation, Jiang Siwei in the front seat gave a light chuckle.
Lu Xuezhou showed no reaction at all.
Yu Fu was very concerned about his attitude, but didn’t dare to stare at him, her wandering gaze flicking across his face, waiting in vain for his final verdict. She was so afraid, afraid that he would suddenly dismiss her due to the gender information discrepancy.
She was so nervous that the fingers clasped in front of her had turned red from gripping.
“Xuezhou, she…”
“You won’t be convenient in a dress.”
Jiang Kanhui’s attempt to help was interrupted by Lu Xuezhou.
His ebony gaze fell directly on her legs. The golden streetlight behind her illuminated her legs, making them look even finer and whiter, clearly not suitable for accompanying them up the mountain and down the grass.
Yu Fu understood his meaning, urgently saying, “I brought clothes, I’ll just change later. Don’t worry, I definitely won’t hold you guys back.”
Her desire to go was written plainly on her face.
Lu Xuezhou’s gaze flickered, and through the cold glass lens, he saw the scorching heat in her eyes. The two extreme temperatures collided silently, causing his overly tranquil eyes to take on a faint blue hue. After looking at her for two seconds, he moved over in his seat.
Yu Fu secretly let out a sigh of relief, carefully sitting down in the car.
“Thank you… Xuezhou…”
She hugged her backpack, timidly leaning on the right side, not daring to touch him at all.
Lu Xuezhou had already closed his eyes, his voice barely concealing weariness, “I’ll sleep for a bit.”
It was clear he wasn’t speaking to her. Yu Fu was aware of this. She instinctively looked towards the people in the front, and sure enough, she saw Jiang Siwei glance back, and once he saw that Lu Xuezhou was really going to rest, he turned his gaze away, not looking at this outsider the entire time.
Yu Fu couldn’t tell if this was good or bad.
The East suburb airport was not in the north city, and the navigation said it would take two hours to drive there from here. During the trip, perhaps because Lu Xuezhou was resting, no one spoke. Watching the play of light and shadow through the window, Yu Fu saw Jiang Siwei put on his headphones, likely listening to music to pass the time.
Quietly observing the dim car interior, Yu Fu’s phone suddenly vibrated in her hand. She lowered her head to unlock it, seeing a message from an unknown number.
: “Have you taken birth control pills?”
The moment she read it, Yu Fu’s heart rate spiked sharply, frightening her into hastily turning off the screen, clutching the phone, but not gripping it tightly enough, feeling it slip from her palm and fall to the floor, without even the sound of it hitting the ground.
She instinctively felt along the side of her leg, slowly searching, and unexpectedly, her fingertip encountered cold metal, then the warmth of skin, startling her heart to plummet, her fingertips reflexively curling up.
The phone that had fallen between them lit up with another message.
In the faint light, Yu Fu saw that she had touched Lu Xuezhou’s hand, feeling the coolness of his ring, and the most presumptuous thing was that her fingers had hooked onto his, as if their relationship was intimate and entangled.
In an instant, she felt as if she had touched a raging fire, fearfully retracting her hand, a tense and trembling voice coming from her throat: “I… I’m looking for my phone…”
The fingertips that had briefly touched him felt scorched.
It was like an electric current, finely but forcefully seeping into every inch of her flesh.
