Chapter 2: Brother-In-Law
Yu Fu couldn’t remember when the video had ended.
A voice had just said she had a round face. It was true – Yu Han had a melon-seed shaped face, a thin and frail figure that made her look like a carved jade figurine, delicate and translucent.
But Yu Fu, her twin sister, had softer facial features and a plump, blunt appearance.
She was not the tall, slender girl that others saw.
Her adolescence had been a transparent one, with few people noticing her.
Yu Fu’s wandering mind slowly returned, and she looked at her elegantly dressed sister. A smile spread across her face: “Sister, it’s been a while.”
This was their formal greeting.
But Yu Han’s mood was evidently low. She just glanced at Yu Fu, then turned back, leaning on the bed with a weary tone: “I don’t know which room you’re in. Ask Mom when she gets back.”
She then picked up her phone again.
Yu Fu hesitated, but Yu Han’s call was already answered. Before the other person could speak, she yelled: “Yuan Yi, why did you just pick up? I called you three times! What were you doing?”
The shout reverberated, making the doorframe tremble. Yu Fu stood nervously, her heartbeat quickening.
After the other end said something, Yu Han’s fiery anger gradually subsided, and she sighed, her tone calming: “My sister is back. I’ll give her the stuff, and you can come pick her up to go together.”
“…”
Yu Fu looked on with a foreboding feeling.
Yu Han’s call had ended.
“What do you want me to do?” she asked timidly.
Yu Han, still frowning tensely, got up and picked up the beautifully wrapped gift on the table, carefully instructing: “This is the birthday gift I prepared for Xuezhou. My friend will come pick you up, and you’ll personally deliver it to him.”
Yu Fu instinctively refused: “I don’t know them… Why don’t you send it?”
In fact, Yu Han’s call to Lu Xuezhou was to gauge his attitude, hoping he would allow her to visit him again. But Yu Fu’s sudden appearance had disrupted her tentative plan. She disliked the way Lu Xuezhou looked at Yu Fu, not even comparing their beauty, just noting their differences.
So, she made Yu Fu deliver the gift, wanting Lu Xuezhou to see for himself.
He would know who was more beautiful.
Yu Han was determined, leaving no room for refusal. “Anyway, you don’t even know which room you’re staying in. Go deliver the gift, and Mom and Dad might be home by the time you get back, so the timing will be just right.”
“…”
Yu Fu took the heavy box. She didn’t know what it was, but could guess it was a valuable gift.
“Okay, then.” Yu Han sounded tired, waving her hand casually. “Go wait for Yuan Yi downstairs.”
“…”
Yu Fu was forced to wait for the person downstairs.
The living room had a floor-to-ceiling glass window. Standing next to it, she could see a vast green lawn outside the villa, with tall Chinese parasol trees lining the sides, forming a cool canopy overhead. A refreshing breeze was blowing.
She thought she could enjoy the coolness when she had time.
As she was admiring the garden scenery, the sound of the security door unlocking came from behind her. Yu Fu turned her head, involuntarily counting the seconds – one, two – the footsteps stopped, and a tall figure entered her anxious field of vision.
The living room was empty except for her. Seeing the stranger, Yu Fu knew she shouldn’t stare, but her gaze was fixed. His short hair, less than ear-length, was rugged and sharp, exuding a strong sense of aggression. His rolled-up black shirt revealed muscular, tattooed arms, and an aura of danger seemed to emanate from his very bones.
She was scared. “Are… are you Yuan Yi?”
The man suddenly let out a derisive hum, glaring at her disdainfully. “No time for self-introductions. Just hurry up and deliver it. I still have work to do after that.”
“…”
Yu Fu’s heart raced, her embarrassment overriding her fear of him.
The gift was what Yu Han wanted to give to Lu Xuezhou. Knowing its importance, Yuan Yi didn’t let Yu Fu carry it. He picked it up and quickly walked ahead. After placing the gift in the backseat and ensuring its safety, he turned around and noticed Yu Fu quietly standing by the car, still not having got in.
Dawdling, making him irritated.
He furrowed his thick brows. “What, you’re just going to stand there like a doorman?”
“…”
Yu Fu shook her head, the bright sun squinting her eyes to mere slits. With a voice as sticky as rice cake, she asked, “I don’t know where to sit, in the front or the back.”
Yuan Yi’s patience was exhausted. He pressed a hand on her shoulder and pulled open the passenger door, pushing her in.
Stumbling, Yu Fu finally got in the car, but as soon as she fastened the seatbelt, the car shot off like a rocket, frightening her so much that she gripped the interior handle tightly, feeling suffocated.
“I spoil Lu Xuezhou all the time, and he still makes me run around!”
The driver’s profile was severe, his brow furrowed with clouds of discontent. It was clear he was venting his frustrations, not conversing with her. Yu Fu caught a useful piece of information – this Yuan Yi seemed to desire Yu Han’s affection but be completely indulged by her.
Suddenly, she felt a little envious of her sister.
To have so many people like her.
The car sped along, and Yu Fu watched the bustling city scenery flashing by the window, just like her own hazy memories of the past, all receding into the distance. She was back in the northern city now, and would soon have a fresh, bright life like her sister.
The car finally stopped in front of a row of European-style villas. The quiet, clean alley had a Gothic-style Catholic church, adding a touch of romance to the lack of hustle and bustle.
A few black cars were parked by the side of the road, catching her eye.
“Is this… his house?”
Yu Fu didn’t know how to address her sister’s boyfriend, as she didn’t know his full name. She looked expectantly at the man in the driver’s seat, but he was just staring down at his phone, ignoring her.
No one answered, and Yu Fu felt embarrassed, her face flushing slightly.
Then she saw someone coming out of the villa in front of them. Reluctantly, she had to find Yuan Yi and timidly remind him, “Someone’s coming out…”
Yuan Yi glanced up.
Then he simply called out: “Just get out and give him the thing.”
“…”
It was true that Yu Han had told her to deliver the gift. Yuan Yi was only acting as the driver.
Afraid the person might leave, Yu Fu quickly got out of the car, taking the gift box from the backseat and carefully cradling it in her arms. As she got closer, her vision became clearer. The person had stopped, seemingly waiting for her.
Yu Fu hurried a few steps forward.
The man was much taller than her. She had to tilt her head back slightly to speak to him, holding out the box: “Uh… Brother-in-law, this is the birthday gift my sister sent you.”
The man didn’t say anything, taking the box from her hands.
Yu Fu’s anxious heart finally settled.
Then she heard a soft-spoken voice: “Thank you, little sister-in-law.”
Yu Fu’s heart skipped a beat, and she swallowed nervously. Daring to look at his face more closely for the first time since meeting him, she saw his short, tousled hair with a slight curl, falling casually in front of his captivating, amorous eyes. His lips curved in a smirk, the rogue-ish air completely concealed by a veneer of gentleness.
Was this the “brother-in-law” whose voice had sounded so icy over the phone?
