Everyone Loves the Alpha, But He’s Not Interested [Transmigration] - Chapter 2
The warm midday sunlight streamed through the window, casting a golden glow over Ning Xi’s body. The soft light wrapped around her like a dream, and her dazed black eyes gave her the look of a lost, innocent fawn wandering through a forest.
Dr. Zhen Qiuyun was momentarily distracted by the sight before she quickly returned to the matter at hand.
“We found your student ID in your jacket pocket and have already notified your school. Since we can’t predict exactly when your differentiation will occur, and to avoid affecting other undifferentiated students at Beihua Academy, you’ll need to remain in the hospital until the process is complete.”
“You’ll most likely finish differentiating within a week, so don’t overthink it,” she said gently to reassure her.
“Thank you, Dr. Zhen,” Ning Xi replied weakly.
“You’re welcome. Just rest well here at the hospital for the next few days. Don’t worry about school,” Dr. Zhen said as she turned to leave.
Ning Xi watched her back as she walked away, feeling like she had forgotten something important.
What was it?
“Dr. Zhen, wait.”
Just before Dr. Zhen disappeared behind the door, Ning Xi finally remembered.
Dr. Zhen paused and turned around, reopening the door. Standing in the doorway, she asked, “Yes, Miss Ning? Is there something else?”
Ning Xi had regained a little strength. She used her right hand to prop herself up, but even that small movement left her breathless, her pale cheeks flushed with strain.
“I forgot to ask who brought me to the hospital.”
She remembered collapsing in front of a woman. Though she hadn’t seen the woman’s face clearly, she remembered her cool, soft body and how, in her feverish state, she had nearly done something inappropriate.
It was very likely that woman had brought her here, and Ning Xi wanted to find her to thank her in person.
Dr. Zhen shook her head.
Ning Xi looked slightly disappointed. “You don’t know either?”
Dr. Zhen replied, “That lady has a special identity. I signed a confidentiality agreement and can’t disclose anything.”
After Dr. Zhen left and the door closed behind her, Ning Xi lay back on the bed, her dark eyes filled with curiosity.
Who exactly was this mysterious person who saved her?
She tried to recall the ABO novel she had read. In the story, Ning Xi was the charismatic, irresistible female Alpha protagonist who had a horde of admirers. No one had ever done a good deed without trying to impress her or win her favor.
Forget it. If she couldn’t figure it out now, she’d wait. If fate allowed, they’d meet again—surely she’d recognize her then… right?
Ning Xi wasn’t sure.
Still, she adapted quickly to her new reality. Unlike other transmigrators who were forced to follow plots under some system’s control, she had nothing binding her. Thankfully, she wasn’t required to stick to a script. Ning Xi had always been emotionally detached and had no interest in romance.
In the novel, after the female lead differentiated into an Alpha, her pheromones often leaked unintentionally. Any Omega who smelled them would fall helplessly in love and throw themselves at her.
Once an Alpha and Omega bonded, the Omega would grow dependent on that Alpha and instinctively reject others. But Alphas didn’t experience the same exclusivity.
An Omega only had one Alpha for life. If that Alpha died, the Omega would live out their days alone.
But Alphas could have multiple Omega partners at once.
Due to unique circumstances, the novel’s protagonist had nearly unlimited stamina and rarely refused anyone. Ning Xi had only read halfway through the book, but by then, the protagonist already had at least eleven Omega lovers.
Thinking too much made Ning Xi drowsy again. Her eyelids fluttered shut, and under the sunlight, the delicate blue veins beneath her thin skin could be faintly seen.
An hour later, a nurse came in to change the IV. Ning Xi stirred groggily, blinking open her eyes. Her dark pupils looked both clear and lost. Her thick lashes drooped slightly like the tired wings of a butterfly.
The nurse met Ning Xi’s gaze and felt her heart skip. Her face flushed slightly.
“You’re awake. How do you feel?”
“A little tired,” Ning Xi replied.
Even in her sleep, her mind hadn’t rested. Memories from the original Ning Xi’s life had replayed at lightning speed in her dreams. Now, she could access any of them with ease.
The nurse noticed her blanket had slipped, leaving her shoulder exposed. She gently covered her back up, speaking with warmth.
“You’ll feel more exhausted during differentiation. Just sleep as much as you can.”
Ning Xi thanked her softly and quickly fell asleep again.
For three consecutive days, she remained trapped in an overwhelming drowsiness. Her waking hours totaled less than two per day.
On the fourth day, just before dawn, Ning Xi suddenly woke up.
The room was completely dark, save for a faint sliver of light coming from the hallway through the small window in the door.
Her entire body felt abnormally alert, as if her bl00d vessels were pulsing with fire. The energy crackled and surged through her, leaving a tingling ache in its wake. She had an uncontrollable urge to destroy something just to let it out.
She was probably about to differentiate.
In the novel, the protagonist had already completed her differentiation when she returned to school. There was no detailed description of the process, so Ning Xi had no idea it would be this painful.
A wave of irritation rose within her. She clenched her fists tightly, trying to contain the beast rampaging inside her.
The air grew hotter around her. Her breathing was ragged and searing. Sweat poured from her body, soaking through her hospital gown and clinging to her skin.
She had no time to care about discomfort. A sharp, sudden pain tore through her head. Ning Xi gritted her teeth and stifled a groan. Her cheeks flushed, and sweat streamed down her face like a waterfall.
Each second crawled by in agony. Again and again, she was tempted to smash her head against the wall just to escape the torment. But each time, she snapped back to reason.
She had fought so hard to live again. She refused to die young all over again.
As the sky began to brighten with the first light of morning, the pain disappeared as abruptly as it had come. Her entire body went limp, and she collapsed into the bed.
The sheets and her gown were drenched. Ning Xi licked her lips and felt a cluster of scabs. The moment her saliva touched them, sharp stings shot through her mouth.
Compared to the differentiation pain, this was nothing.
She had lost too much fluid through sweat. Her mouth was dry, her tongue thick, and her eyes burned with dryness. She had only one thought in her mind.
Water.
She didn’t have the strength to call a nurse. Nor could she get up and get water herself. Her gaze slowly shifted until it landed on the red emergency button near the bed.
Last time, she had accidentally pressed it and gotten a response from the nurses’ station.
Using every ounce of strength she had left, she moved her hand toward it and let it fall onto the button.
“Bed Eight, do you need assistance?” a soft female voice asked, sounding like an angel to Ning Xi’s ears.
I…
Ning Xi opened her mouth, but her throat was so dry she couldn’t make a single sound.
“Bed Eight?”
There was no response.
“Dr. Zhen, I think something’s wrong with the patient in Bed Eight.”
The voice cut off.
Ning Xi let out a sigh of relief.
The sharp click of footsteps echoed outside the room. The door to the hospital room opened from the outside. Dr. Zhen Qiuyun entered quickly when she saw Ning Xi lying weakly on the bed, completely soaked with sweat.
This private room was specially designed for patients undergoing differentiation. The walls were coated with a material that could absorb pheromones released into the air. If it absorbed Alpha pheromones, the walls would turn blue. If it absorbed Omega pheromones, they would turn pink.
“You really did differentiate into an Alpha,” Dr. Zhen said as she glanced at the now deep indigo-colored wall. She stepped forward and gently touched Ning Xi’s wrist. Her pulse was strong and steady. With a calm tone, she added, “Alpha differentiation often causes extreme sweating, which can lead to dehydration. The IV we gave you earlier was meant to prevent death from dehydration during the process.”
A nurse came in just a moment later, holding a pouch of pale pink liquid. She inserted a soft straw into the pouch and knelt beside the bed, placing the other end of the straw gently between Ning Xi’s lips.
As Ning Xi began to slowly drink, Dr. Zhen explained, “This is a rapid-recovery fluid designed to treat dehydration in Alphas. A single drop can break down into the equivalent of ten drops of water in the body. You should feel it working within three minutes.”
Ning Xi gradually finished half the pouch. She could clearly feel her body recovering quickly. Her mouth was no longer dry, and even her eyes no longer felt rough when she blinked.
After finishing the entire pouch, her strength returned steadily. As her energy came back, Ning Xi easily pushed herself up into a sitting position with one hand on the bed.
Dr. Zhen noticed the surprise in her eyes and smiled.
“This kind of fluid is essential for Alphas. Your pheromone levels are extremely high, so you might need to use it regularly.”
“My pheromone levels are high? I thought differentiation only happened once,” Ning Xi asked in confusion.
Dr. Zhen patiently explained, “The wall absorbed your pheromones during your differentiation. The deeper the color, the stronger the concentration. I have worked at this hospital for five years, and this is the first time I have seen the walls turn such a dark indigo. But such a high pheromone level is not necessarily a good thing. We will need to do a full-body exam to make sure everything is normal.”
“As for the recovery fluid, it is true that differentiation only happens once. However, Alphas have a susceptibility period every month. If you ever find your Omega and want to get through three days and nights together without any problems, you will definitely need this fluid.”
“I probably will not need it,” Ning Xi said quietly. She had no plans to find an Omega.
In the original Ning Xi’s memories, she recalled a biology class where they explained that Alphas used to either endure their susceptibility periods alone or rely on Omegas. That was before scientists developed pheromone suppressants about fifty years ago. Since then, it had become much easier to manage.
However, suppressants were expensive. The original Ning Xi was an orphan, and her university tuition was covered entirely by state welfare.
It was time to start thinking seriously about how to earn money.
Afterward, Ning Xi followed a nurse to take a shower. She changed into her own clothes, had six vials of bl00d drawn, and went through a series of medical exams.
Half an hour later, all the results were ready. Ning Xi sat across from Dr. Zhen once again.
Dr. Zhen flipped through the reports one by one. Her brows furrowed more tightly with each page. Ning Xi felt increasingly anxious.
Could something really be wrong? In the novel, the only unusual thing about the female lead was how casually she handled relationships. There had been no mention of any serious medical issues.
Dr. Zhen sighed quietly and put the stack of reports down. She rested her elbows on the table and adjusted her glasses, her fingers interlocked.
“Ning Xi, remember earlier I mentioned that having very high pheromone levels might not be a good thing?”
Ning Xi nodded. She was listening closely now, her heart tightening with unease.
“I reviewed your results. A normal Alpha’s pheromone concentration usually falls between thirty and fifty percent. Yours is at ninety percent. That leads to a serious issue. Your susceptibility period will be much longer than average. Instead of three days, yours will last about ten days every month.”
Dr. Zhen paused briefly and then continued, her voice lowering.
“Omegas have more delicate bodies. They might not be able to handle ten days of bonding. So, well…”
She cleared her throat, slightly uncomfortable.
“You may need to have more than three Omega partners.”
Dr. Zhen already knew from Ning Xi’s records that she was an orphan, currently in her second year of university, and relying on government aid for her education.
Omegas were rare and highly valued. Most married into wealth and power. For someone like Ning Xi, who had no family background, finding even one lifelong Omega partner would be difficult. But she might need three or more.
Behind her glasses, Dr. Zhen’s eyes showed a trace of sympathy.
“Pheromone suppressants can be used up to three times a month. Using more than that can cause serious harm to your body. You probably already know that each suppressant only works for one day. That means for the other seven days, you will need to rely on your Omega partners or endure it alone. I am an Alpha myself. Enduring it alone is nearly impossible. Three days is my limit. Seven days is unimaginable. I really recommend that you start looking for suitable Omega partners soon.”
Ning Xi sat there silently, completely stunned.
No wonder the female lead in the novel was so energetic and open with everyone.
Her body made it necessary.
This kind of physical condition that forces a person to be flirtatious… It really was the classic setup for a romance novel heroine.
Tears formed in her heart.
