- Chapter 2 - Is Your Shoulder Warm?
“Is Sana here?”
Wakana casually appeared in my class, her expression as nonchalant as ever.
The classmates, who had noticed an unexpected visitor in Wakana, buzzed with excitement, as if they were caught up in a whirlwind.
One of them came over to call me. At this point, I couldn’t ignore it. Truly, this was a wicked woman’s wicked ploy.
“It’s rare for you to come see me, Wakana! I’m kind of happy…”
I subtly signaled to those around us that we were already friends. I wanted to avoid any strange inquiries.
“If you feel that way, I’m happy too. Next time, you could come to my class, you know? I’d welcome you.”
Huh? This woman is getting a bit too full of herself now that she has me at a disadvantage.
“Sure! So, what brings you here today?”
“Actually, I need your help with something for the student council.”
…Huh?
“Uh, why me?”
“It’s about the cleanup after the cultural festival. It seems that a chair that doesn’t belong to the equipment room got mixed in. I heard you helped out, so I wanted to confirm a few things.”
“…Oh, I see! But you could have just asked me here, you know?”
Hurry up, this is annoying. I really don’t want to think about that day any longer.
“It might take some time, so could we talk after school? That would be smoother.”
“…I see. Okay, got it. Sounds good!”
In a place where many eyes were watching, it was common knowledge that I had helped with the cultural festival. With her saying this, I had no choice but to agree.
She really has a nasty personality. It’s laughable that she can act so prim and proper. Though I guess I can be like that too.

After school. I gently declined an invitation from a classmate from another class who was unaware of anything, and hurried straight to the student council room.
“…What do you intend to do?”
“We have tea, coffee, and cocoa too.”
“I don’t want any. I’m asking what your purpose is in getting involved with me.”
Wakana leisurely sat down at the desk in the student council room, as if to flaunt her composure.
“I won’t tell anyone about Sana. I just wanted to talk, just the two of us.”
“What does that mean…? Are you talking about the promise you mentioned before? You want me to believe that you’ll keep something like that?”
“You know my secret too, don’t you? I understand that it can be unsettling if only one of us has the upper hand, but this is our secret. I won’t spill it.”
Step by step, she was blocking my escape routes. If she exposed me, I could expose her too. That intention was clear. It was a strength I couldn’t have imagined from the outwardly composed Wakana.
“…Also, stop calling me by my first name.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Why not?”
“Because I like it.”
“…Huh?”
Wakana slowly lifted one leg from the edge of the desk, cradling it against her chest.
The way she held just one leg was incredibly alluring. The shape of her thigh peeking out from her skirt caught my eye.
“I like you, Sana.”
The slight upward curve of her lips seemed to test me. Her large eyes were fixed on me, as if to capture and never let go. Wakana’s words echoed within me.
“What are you saying—”
I started to speak but stopped. I knew this wasn’t a joke from Wakana.
I had been confessed to many times before. Through those experiences, I had come to understand more. She must genuinely be saying she likes me, not in a friendly way, but romantically.
“…Why me?”
I had already decided to reject any confessions from boys. If I were to date someone specific, the chances of my true self being revealed would increase significantly, and besides, it was clear that anyone who liked the surface version of me had their own issues.
So, I was curious. Knowing my true self, why me? Did Wakana like girls?
“Who knows? Are you curious?”
“…Not really.”
Wakana lowered her leg to the floor and closed the distance between us with that leg.
It felt just like that time. The moment she suddenly pulled me close.
But she stopped just short of touching me.
“Hey, come over here.”
“…Why?”
“Come over here. Or is being near me making you nervous?”
That same look again. A seductive smile that seemed to test me.
I slowly took a step closer to Wakana. She remained smiling, not making any move to come to me. It felt as if she was saying, “Come closer,” with an air of confidence.
That irritated me, and I took another step forward.
In the student council room, just the two of us, my footsteps echoed. With each step, silence enveloped us.
Since Wakana was taller than me, my gaze fell upon her softly curved shoulders.
Did she sense my gaze? Wakana pulled my head toward her, cradling it.
“Is your shoulder warm?”
I didn’t answer that question. My face, resting on her shoulder, was probably flushed.
“Are you not excited?”
“…”
“Hey, answer me.”
“…Not really. I was just surprised.”
As I said that, I felt her grip on the back of my head tighten. My face was drawn deeper into Wakana’s shoulder.
“Sana, you’re lying.”
“…I’m not lying.”
“Because your heart is racing.”
“…!”
Still holding me close, Wakana whispered in my ear.
“About earlier, your answer. The ‘why Sana?'”
She spoke slowly, as if to let the words seep into me.
“Because you were just like me now.”
Wakana didn’t say anything more, falling silent as if giving me time to think.
Just like me now. Cradled in Wakana’s shoulder, feeling the intense beating of my heart, just like me now.
Did Wakana feel that as love…? But I—
“Oh, you don’t have to answer.”
“…Huh?”
“I don’t know if Sana likes girls, and if we suddenly move forward, it would just confuse you.”
Saying that, Wakana removed her hand from my head, creating distance between us. Just like that, her warmth slipped away from me.
“So, if you ever want to date me, confess again, this time from your side.”
“W-What is that…?”
Since she had already made her confession, she wouldn’t say she liked me again. If I had come to like her, then it was my turn to say it.
It seemed reasonable, yet it felt unreasonable. Wakana wanted me to desire her of my own volition.
Even now, I could still feel the warmth and sensation of Wakana’s shoulder on my cheek. It felt insufficient. Yes, I was made to feel that way. Was this also part of Wakana’s scheme?
“…That future will never come. Don’t get your hopes up.”
I think I was pushed to the limit, just managing to say that.
