After that night, Yang Jiu calmed down for a few days.

Shu Nanxuan didn’t see her outside of work hours, and the frequent chance encounters from before completely stopped.

When they interacted at work, Yang Jiu was respectful, sticking strictly to business without overstepping.

Shu Nanxuan left the office, walking to the parking lot while wondering if Yang Jiu had truly given up.

She left work late, and the parking lot had few cars left.

From a distance, she saw someone standing there.

As she got closer, she realized it was Yang Jiu, standing by her own car, pulling the handle but unable to open the door.

“What’s wrong?”

It was a casual question out of habit.

After asking, Shu Nanxuan regretted it but thought it was normal to ask a colleague.

“The car seems broken; the door won’t open,” Yang Jiu’s muffled voice came through.

Shu Nanxuan hummed, with no intention of continuing the conversation.

She figured Yang Jiu wouldn’t be stumped by such a small issue.

She opened her car door, got in, and closed it.

As she started the engine, Yang Jiu knocked on her window.

Shu Nanxuan lowered the window, saying nothing, just looking at her silently.

Yang Jiu looked awkward. She cleared her throat before speaking, “I can’t open the door. Can you give me a ride home?”

In Shu Nanxuan’s memory, Yang Jiu was always proud, aloof, and self-assured.

Even when they dated, Yang Jiu rarely showed vulnerability.

But since meeting again, Yang Jiu had shown weakness too many times, sometimes making Shu Nanxuan wonder if this was still the same Yang Jiu.

She paused before saying, “Get in.”

Their paths were too close, living across from each other.

Refusing didn’t feel right.

Yang Jiu responded quickly, hurrying to the passenger side.

“Thank you, President Shu.”

Lately, Yang Jiu had been proper, never calling her Nanxuan again, just addressing her as President Shu like everyone else.

Though everyone called her that, and she had told Yang Jiu to do the same, when Yang Jiu actually did, Shu Nanxuan felt a slight discomfort.

She knew what that feeling was but deliberately ignored it.

The atmosphere in the car was far from harmonious.

Shu Nanxuan focused on driving without speaking, and Yang Jiu stayed silent.

Since learning Shu Nanxuan had no engagement plans, Yang Jiu stopped being as impatient as before.

Being pushy was useless and would only backfire.

Things are good now.

She could see Shu Nanxuan every day, unlike the thousand-plus days and nights before, when longing drove her mad with no way to ease it.

They drove home in silence.

As they stepped out of the elevator, Yang Jiu finally spoke her first words of the night, “President Shu, thank you for tonight.”

Shu Nanxuan waved her hand.

At work, she could be polite with Yang Jiu, but after the silent ride, she had no desire to be courteous.

Yang Jiu keenly noticed the change in Shu Nanxuan’s attitude.

She asked nervously, “Are you feeling unwell?”

Shu Nanxuan shook her head, denying it, and turned to walk to her door.

Yang Jiu grabbed her wrist but, fearing anger, quickly let go.

“Sorry, I’m just worried about you.”

“If you’re unwell, please tell me, okay?”

Yang Jiu’s attitude irritated Shu Nanxuan further.

She didn’t even bother with a perfunctory response and went straight into her apartment.

Left behind, Yang Jiu knew Shu Nanxuan was upset but didn’t know why.

Her heart raced as she repeatedly thought about what she might have done wrong on the ride home.

She thought all night but couldn’t figure out what she did.

Sleepless for half the night, she still didn’t know what went wrong.
