- Chapter 2 - Is It Okay To Call the Boss by Her First Name?
The HR handling Yang Jiu’s onboarding felt that Yang Jiu seemed overly excited about joining Nanhe.
It was as if joining Nanhe was some great bargain.
Despite Yang Jiu’s efforts to suppress her emotions during the onboarding process, the HR keenly sensed Yang Jiu’s joy.
“Director Yang, you seem very happy,” the HR said.
“Yes, I’m thrilled to join Nanhe,” Yang Jiu replied with a beaming smile.
She was genuinely overjoyed.
Shu Nanxuan’s reaction that day made her think she had no chance, but then she received a message from Nanhe’s HR.
After brief communication, they confirmed her start date for the following week.
The HR’s current impression was doubt: Did Shu really believe this person was fit for the legal director role?
Yang Jiu’s behavior seemed like that of someone incompetent who lucked into a position beyond their ability.
Could Shu have been deceived?
But Shu Nanxuan’s decisions weren’t for her to question.
In the two years since Shu Nanxuan took over Nanhe, she increased sales by twenty percent, and the company’s atmosphere noticeably improved—a fact everyone recognized.
After completing the onboarding procedures, the HR led Yang Jiu to her office door and opened it.
“Director Yang, this is your office,” she said.
“If you don’t need anything else, I’ll head out. Feel free to familiarize yourself, and call me if you need anything,” the HR added.
“Okay, thank you,” Yang Jiu replied.
“You’re welcome,” the HR responded.
“Wait, um… where is Shu’s office?” Yang Jiu asked, as if the question just occurred to her.
Though the question had been circling in her mind for a while, she pretended it was casual.
Her acting was convincing.
The HR didn’t notice the slight nervousness in Yang Jiu’s question, assuming she just needed to find Shu Nanxuan.
“It’s on the fifteenth floor,” the HR answered.
Yang Jiu thanked her, and the HR left.
The fifteenth floor was less than four meters from where she stood.
Without much thought, Yang Jiu set down her bag and headed up.
Shu Nanxuan’s office was easy to find.
The fifteenth floor had only her office, a secretary’s room, and the rest were meeting rooms.
As it was her first time there, the secretary looked puzzled.
“May I help you?” the secretary asked.
“Hello, I’m the new legal director. I have something to discuss with Shu,” Yang Jiu said, introducing herself briefly.
The secretary nodded in understanding, said, “One moment,” knocked on Shu Nanxuan’s office door, went in, and returned in less than thirty seconds.
“Director Yang, please go in,” the secretary said.
As Yang Jiu stepped inside, Shu Nanxuan’s voice rang out, formal and devoid of emotion.
“Close the door,” she said.
“Nanxuan,” Yang Jiu said, her voice carrying a cheerful tone.
Shu Nanxuan frowned instinctively but quickly relaxed.
Her voice remained steady, with a hint of displeasure.
“Director Yang, is it appropriate to call your boss by her first name during work hours?”
Before Yang Jiu could respond, Shu Nanxuan continued, “What’s the matter?”
The cold words dampened Yang Jiu’s initially cheerful mood, but the expected attitude didn’t affect her too deeply.
“Shu, I… I don’t have anything specific. I just wanted to come say hello,” Yang Jiu said.
“If there’s nothing, you can get back to work. I didn’t hire you to cozy up to your boss. Understood?”
Shu Nanxuan lowered her head to continue reviewing documents without sparing Yang Jiu a glance.
Yang Jiu nodded, still smiling.
“Alright, Shu, I’ll head back then,” she said.
Shu Nanxuan didn’t say another word, only letting out a faint sound of acknowledgment.
