- Chapter 15 - Opening
After everyone had picked their cards, the game officially began. The group emerged from the small Western-style house, each heading in different directions.
Judging by the current situation, everyone was highly cautious, unwilling to hastily form alliances or acknowledge any kinship.
Just as Chi Yuan was hesitating over which direction to take, Jiang Ci caught up from behind and casually slung an arm over her shoulder. A faint breath of air brushed past her ear as Jiang Ci whispered, “Want to team up, little witch?”
Having been fooled once before, Chi Yuan was now on guard. Without changing her expression, she retorted, “I’m not the witch—I’m the werewolf. Watch out, or I’ll take you out first.”
Jiang Ci didn’t move, murmuring softly, “A-Yuan, you’re a terrible actress.”
Hearing the intimate nickname “A-Yuan” caught Chi Yuan off guard. The suggestive tone made her cheeks flush crimson, the heat in her ears threatening to combust on the spot.
Jiang Ci watched her reaction and licked her lips. “You looked troubled even before the game started. You must’ve played something similar before but weren’t any good at it.”
“After we came out, everyone else immediately hid their cards and started observing others warily. But you? You kept staring at your card, checking it at least four or five times with this conflicted look.”
Her tone was downright gleeful. “Being this anxious can only mean you drew a difficult card—one that puts you in a dilemma. Neither a villager nor a werewolf would cause this much stress. You must’ve gotten a special role with unique abilities.”
Chi Yuan forced composure, insisting stubbornly, “I’m just a werewolf. Believe it or not.”
“Fine, fine, you’re the werewolf, you’re the werewolf,” Jiang Ci conceded before adding, “We should hurry and find game points for clues. Splitting up will be more efficient.”
With that, the two parted ways on the path.
The cameraman following Jiang Ci asked, “There are three special roles. How did you know Chi Yuan got the witch?”
Jiang Ci grinned at the camera, waving her own black identity card. “What if I said I was bluffing? Would you believe me? Either way, this trick never fails.”
The radiantly beautiful woman flashed a sly, fox-like smile, her calculating eyes brimming with mischief, enticing others to unravel her schemes.
After separating from Jiang Ci, Chi Yuan headed for the highest hill.
Chi Yuan: “The higher you stand, the farther you see.”
But halfway up the slope, a conspicuous blue tent came into view.
Its four poles were planted firmly in the ground, loosely tied with ropes. The blue canopy fluttered slightly in the wind, as if on the verge of collapsing under its own weight—yet it did nothing to dampen the fierce competition beneath it.
In front of a makeshift claw machine stood Gu Ning and Gao Yaohui, their fingers pointing and gesturing at the plush toys behind the glass. Every so often, frustrated groans erupted between them.
Just as Chi Yuan was about to run over, her phone buzzed.
“Night falls. Player Gu Ning has died. Will you use a potion to revive him?”
Gu Ning, looking thoroughly defeated, stood behind Gao Yaohui in line. Spotting Chi Yuan approaching from the hill, he waved a fistful of game tokens. “Sis Chi, this game’s rigged—it’s impossible to win. Gao Yaohui and I have played over a dozen rounds here and still haven’t grabbed a single toy.”
Chi Yuan took a few tokens from him and joined the queue.
At the front, Gao Yaohui kept muttering, “The angle is everything. We need the perfect angle for a one-shot kill.”
Gu Ning complained, “But this claw keeps shaking every time it grabs something. How are we supposed to play like this?”
It’d be more practical to find another game booth at this point.
Gao Yaohui suddenly exclaimed, “Hey! Look, it’s coming out! It’s—”
Gu Ning quickly bent down to look, just in time to see the white bunny plushie with long ears sliding toward the exit edge of the claw machine. Half its head was out, but its body was still stuck inside.
So close.
Gu Ning cheered and immediately pushed aside the disappointed Gao Yaohui. “This one’s mine for sure.”
But the moment he touched the joystick, the island’s broadcast sounded.
“Night falls. Player Gu Ning has been eliminated. No last words permitted. Please leave the area immediately.”
Gu Ning: “…”
He let out a frustrated roar, “Dammit, why kill me?!”
The crew promptly stepped in, covering his mouth as they escorted him away.
Chi Yuan, who had just arrived to queue, silently apologized in her heart. The Witch’s antidote was too valuable—she wanted to save it for later. Besides, wolves faking suicide early to bait the antidote was a common strategy.
After mourning his misfortune for two seconds in her mind, she smoothly maneuvered the claw and successfully grabbed the bunny plushie.
As the plushie dropped with a clunk, a red ribbon-tied note fell out with it.
This must be the clue.
Chi Yuan turned away, avoiding Gao Yaohui’s nosy peeking, and carefully unfolded the note. It read:
“One of the werewolves is female.”
Gu Ning was dragged back to the cottage by two staff members, one on each side. Grumbling, he tossed his identity card back into the voting box. The black card flipped over, revealing a silhouette of a wolf howling under the moonlight.
In ornate script, it read: “Werewolf.”
Storming into the post-game interview room, he demanded, “Who the hell killed me? A werewolf killing another werewolf—what a ruthless move.”
Everyone burst into laughter. No one expected a werewolf to die right at the start, let alone by friendly fire.
The director explained, “You were Werewolf No. 3. The one who killed you was Werewolf No. 1, Wang Wen.”
Gu Ning was baffled. “Why would he suddenly kill me?”
“You kept shouting ‘I’m a good guy’ the moment you got your card—over and over again.”
“Isn’t that how the game works? Was I supposed to admit I’m a werewolf and ask to be voted out?”
The director shrugged. “Guess Wang Wen bought it. We did warn everyone about accidental kills before the game started.”
Gu Ning: “…”
The island broadcast sounded again: “Voting and discussion will now commence. All players must speak in the order of the numbers on their identity cards.”
“Ding-ding-ding—” A chaotic dial tone blared from the speakers.
After three seconds, the call connected.
It was Momo’s voice. “Uh, I’m Player One. Starting my speech now—I’m a good guy, and I’ve got a special role.”
The brief statement ended, and the turn passed to Wang Wen. “Gu Ning’s elimination means the werewolves struck last night, and the Witch didn’t use the antidote. I think the Seer should check Gu Ning’s identity tonight.”
Jiang Wan: “I’m a civilian. Right now, there are no clues at all. Maybe we should skip voting this round.”
Player 4 Gu Ning was eliminated, skipping their speech.
Player 5 Zhao Zhenzhen, “I agree with Jiang Wan. Let’s not vote this round. It’s only the first round with no clear information—we might easily vote out the wrong person.”
Jiang Ci: “Has anyone obtained any werewolf clues so far? Sharing them would give everyone direction. If you’re withholding information after winning, you’ll become a werewolf suspect.”
Gao Yaohui: “Chi Yuan won the claw machine game—she should have a clue.”
Chi Yuan, who hadn’t decided whether to reveal her clue, had no choice but to speak up after hearing Jiang Ci and Gao Yaohui’s remarks.
“I’m a good person. The clue I got from the claw machine is that there’s at least one female among the werewolves. I don’t have any leads—figure it out yourselves.”
Finally, Gu Meng spoke. “I won the water bead-catching game. The clue I got was just two words: glasses. But none of us are wearing glasses, so I don’t know who it refers to.”
After everyone had spoken, there really wasn’t a single suspicious candidate—all the statements seemed normal.
When it came time to vote, most people abstained. In the end, with one vote for Chi Yuan and one for Zhao Zhenzhen, it ended in a tie—no one was eliminated.
The vote against Chi Yuan came from Gao Yaohui. She couldn’t understand why he’d target her—was he the werewolf?
Thinking about it, he had been unusually determined during the game. Even when Gu Ning wanted to give up, he kept going. Maybe he was afraid Gu Ning would get the clue and wanted to secure it first.
Gao Yaohui, now Chi Yuan’s prime suspect, had no idea the witch’s poison was looming over him, ready to strike and eliminate him at any moment.
Meanwhile, Jiang Ci strolled leisurely along the path, showing no intention of looking for game spots. Her cheerful steps made it seem like she was on a picnic.
But as she walked, she suddenly noticed a little tail following her.
She turned around and saw Jiang Wan peeking at her from behind a tree: …
Was she some kind of ghost? Why did she keep appearing out of nowhere?
Realizing she’d been caught, Jiang Wan slowly stepped out. “I overheard your conversation with Sister Chi. Sister Jiang, can I form an alliance with you?”
No matter how innocent her smile looked, Jiang Ci knew she was up to no good.
So she refused outright. “I don’t ally with people of unknown roles. Unless… you reveal your identity card.”
Jiang Wan knew Jiang Ci wasn’t easily fooled. Gritting her teeth, she flipped over her civilian card.
This only made Jiang Ci more wary.
“Aren’t you afraid I’m the werewolf and might kill you next round?”
Jiang Wan: “I trust Sister Jiang wouldn’t hurt me. You’re too kind.”
Jiang Ci looked exasperated. “This is a game, a competition. Playing the friendship card or guilt-tripping won’t work.”
Jiang Wan’s expression stiffened. Her voice grew even more pitiful, eyes glistening with tears. “I really want to ally with you, Sister Jiang. I… I actually know a Sudoku game spot, but I’m too dumb to solve it.”
“Sister Jiang is so smart—you’d definitely pass it.”
Was she dead set on allying?
Watching Jiang Wan’s ability to cry on demand, Jiang Ci thought to herself: If Jiang Wan put even half the effort she spent on scheming into acting, she’d be serious competition for next year’s Best Actress award.
Curious about what tricks Jiang Wan had up her sleeve, Jiang Ci agreed without hesitation.
At the same time, the Save the Villain System in Chi Yuan’s mind sounded another alarm.
“Detected female protagonist in close proximity to villain Jiang Ci. Female protagonist’s malice level has exceeded average and continues to rise.”
“Real-time navigation activated. Host must rush to the scene immediately!”
Chi Yuan: ?!
