Failed to Transmigrate, I’m Back Again - Chapter 16
“Why are you still here?” Tang Wuyun didn’t bother to hide the suspicion in her eyes.
She surreptitiously glanced at Shi Shuwu, and doubt immediately resurfaced. Could she really be waiting for me?
What’s Shi Shuwu thinking?
Shi Shuwu, sensing she might have deciphered Tang Wuyun’s gaze, fell silent.
“What nonsense are you thinking about now?”
Shi Shuwu, genuinely afraid Tang Wuyun would lapse into narcissism again, quickly replied, “I dropped my watch. I came back to get it.”
Tang Wuyun cleared her throat, scratched her cheek, and began backing away.
“Oh, I have a mission to do. I’ll be going now.”
She tossed out a casual farewell and fled.
Shi Shuwu watched Tang Wuyun’s hasty retreat, speechless. She then turned to Ji Mingyin, her eyes equally suspicious.
“You…” Shi Shuwu hesitated, stroking her chin.
Ji Mingyin panicked. “I swear, I’m not!”
These two are ridiculous! I haven’t even suspected them yet!
Shi Shuwu considered this for a moment and nodded, deciding to trust Ji Mingyin for now. “Okay, okay. Calm down.”
She walked over to the living room sofa and sat down, gesturing for Ji Mingyin to join her.
Ji Mingyin: “……”
Suddenly, she felt a strong urge to leave.
But after hesitating for two seconds, she sat down anyway. “Aren’t you leaving?”
Shi Shuwu smiled sweetly and pulled a card from her pocket. “I found a card for free accommodation, so there’s no rush to do the mission.”
“And I have an extra one here.”
Ji Mingyin’s eyes lit up as Shi Shuwu produced another card. She wasn’t stupid; this extra card was clearly meant for a trade with her!
Without waiting for Shi Shuwu to say anything, she nodded eagerly. “Yes! I’m in!”
Shi Shuwu: “……”
Not even a token protest?
Shi Shuwu felt her carefully planned rhythm being thrown off.
“Aren’t you going to ask what I want you to do?”
Ji Mingyin raised her eyebrows and grinned. “Getting a free accommodation card for one mission versus doing several missions for a hundred points to pay for accommodation? I know which one to choose.”
As evening approached, the sky outside gradually darkened.
Tang Wuyun emerged from the house but didn’t leave immediately. She waited nearby for a long time, but the two inside never came out.
Driven by curiosity, Tang Wuyun hesitated before turning back.
She crept to the living room window, crouched down, and peered through the crack.
What she saw was a clandestine transaction: Ji Mingyin taking a card from Shi Shuwu’s hand.
Tang Wuyun: “!”
Something’s fishy!
These two are definitely up to something!
Afraid of making a sound, Tang Wuyun covered her mouth with her hand and waved at the cameraman to stay back.
But when she turned back, she found herself face-to-face with Shi Shuwu.
!!!
Tang Wuyun’s eyes widened, her heart skipping a beat in terror. She spun around and fled.
Shi Shuwu froze, utterly bewildered.
“Why is she running?” she asked Ji Mingyin, who stood beside her. “Am I that scary?”
She had noticed Tang Wuyun spying earlier and had simply wanted to say hello. Why was Tang Wuyun reacting so dramatically?
Ji Mingyin paused. “…Probably saw a ghost.”
Shi Shuwu turned to look at her. “?”
Tang Wuyun ran like the wind, frantically opening her smartwatch to contact Shi Zhimiao.
“Miaomiao! Help me! Help!”
Hearing the frantic voice, Shi Zhimiao thought, “…?”
What’s all the screaming about?
Sensing the urgency in Tang Wuyun’s voice, she immediately called back. Tang Wuyun answered almost instantly.
“What’s wrong?” Shi Zhimiao asked.
Tang Wuyun’s voice had already calmed down. “Oh, it’s nothing now.”
Shi Shuwu hadn’t even chased her.
She glanced back several times, but the two remained motionless.
Had she misjudged the situation?
Shi Zhimiao, still confused, retorted, “Then why were you yelling like that earlier?”
Tang Wuyun answered truthfully, “I saw some shady dealings they were trying to keep secret, and they caught me.”
She added a warning, “Be careful around Shi Shuwu and Ji Mingyin.”
“Especially Shi Shuwu. She’s sharp as a tack—don’t let her trick you.”
Shi Zhimiao raised an eyebrow. “You think they’re up to something?”
She added dryly, “Well, they’re definitely smarter than you.”
Tang Wuyun pouted. Why the unnecessary dig?
She huffed, “Probably. Not sure. Gotta go.”
With that, she immediately hung up the call.
Since Shi Shuwu didn’t pursue her, Tang Wuyun decided not to meet up with Shi Zhimiao either.
Instead, she planned to check on the Red Team members who had just committed their misdeeds.
All afternoon, she had only encountered Pei Yinxi and Bai Jin twice, giving them two false leads and then losing sight of them completely.
Under the warm yellow glow of a streetlamp, Pei Yinxi had just finished assimilating Bai Jin, who had been her companion for so long.
Before Bai Jin could even voice a complaint, Tang Wuyun came jogging toward them, her face beaming with excitement.
“Sister Pei! Jinjin! I finally found you!”
Bai Jin: “……”
This clueless girl.
Unfortunately, having just switched allegiances, she couldn’t warn Tang Wuyun about anything.
Pei Yinxi glanced at Tang Wuyun with surprise. “How did you know we were here?”
Tang Wuyun caught her breath as she stood beside them, pausing before replying, “I ran into Tan Hao on the way. He told me he saw you here.”
Pei Yinxi nodded thoughtfully, wondering if Tan Hao had witnessed anything earlier. Today, she could only assimilate people to become her teammates; killing was reserved for tomorrow. When tomorrow comes, he’ll be my first target.
“What do you want?”
She looked at Tang Wuyun with a hint of regret. Having just used her assimilation ability, she needed to wait two hours before using it again.
Tang Wuyun blinked innocently and replied, “Oh, Miaomiao’s been giving me the cold shoulder, and my other two teammates are acting weird, so I thought I’d come hang out with you guys.”
And maybe observe if these two are acting strange too.
Bai Jin retorted, “So you think we’re happy to see you?”
Was she being too lenient with Tang Wuyun today?
It seems Tang Wuyun’s getting the wrong idea.
When Shi Zhimiao’s name came up, Pei Yinxi couldn’t help but ponder.
“What exactly did you say to A’Miao that day?”
On the day Tang Wuyun went berserk and blocked them all, Shi Zhimiao had been the quietest. Pei Yinxi remembered having to call her repeatedly before she finally answered.
Even now, she still didn’t know what Tang Wuyun had said to Shi Zhimiao, but it must have been words that stabbed right into her heart.
They all knew each other well enough to know exactly which words would strike at each other’s most vulnerable spots.
Tang Wuyun had done exactly that.
She had gone to great lengths to push them all away.
Among the five of them, Lu Ya was the youngest, having debuted at just sixteen. As the only minor in the group, she was the most sensitive, constantly fearing that her four older sisters disliked her and resented her youth.
Tang Wuyun’s words that day—that she had never truly liked Lu Ya—had deeply wounded her. Even now, though Lu Ya had matured and grown more resilient, she remained vulnerable.
The thought of Lu Ya crying on the phone to her for hours filled Pei Yinxi with anger, and her gaze toward Tang Wuyun grew resentful.
She took a deep breath and waved her hand. “Forget it. If A’Miao doesn’t want to talk about it, she probably doesn’t want us to know. You shouldn’t say anything either.”
Tang Wuyun gave Pei Yinxi, who was clearly clueless, a long, pitying look, silently mourning for Shi Zhimiao for two seconds.
She pressed her lips tightly together, determined not to speak. If she did, Shi Zhimiao and Pei Yinxi’s relationship might be over.
