- Chapter 3 - Willing to Bet and Accept Defeat
After the second class in the morning, the students closed their eyes to do eye exercises to protect their vision. When homeroom teacher Wang Piaopiao wasn’t around, not a single student did the exercises properly. The mischievous boys in class would glance around instead of doing the exercises—some would pat their classmates’ shoulders or pull girls’ pigtails to cause trouble. Only when they spotted Wang Piaopiao entering did these little rascals pretend to be diligently performing the eye exercises.
After class, homeroom teacher Wang Piaopiao called the class monitor, Ma Xue, who was also the prettiest girl in class, to her office. Wang Piaopiao informed Ma Xue that Children’s Day was approaching and asked her to organize the class to rehearse a dance performance with the music teacher.
Yue Ran remembered that in her past life, Children’s Day in elementary school was the only time she had ever worn a princess dress. After that, she never wore a skirt again.
Now, with the mental age of a 30-year-old, the thought of wearing a frilly princess dress and acting cute like a little girl was mortifying—she’d rather die than go through that embarrassment!
On the day of the rehearsal, Yue Ran looked around at the delicate little girls dressed in fluffy white princess dresses. Their parents had even carefully powdered their faces, painted their lips bright red, and some had a small red dot in the middle of their foreheads. Yue Ran thought, It’s just a rehearsal—do they really need to go all out like this?
Among the crowd, Yue Ran stood out like a sore thumb—she wasn’t wearing a princess dress, nor had she bothered with any fancy makeup.
The class monitor, a prim little girl, noticed Yue Ran’s lack of a skirt and questioned her like a strict adult.
Yue Ran made up an excuse on the spot, claiming she was allergic to the fabric of the dress and would break out in rashes if she wore one.
The class monitor was skeptical—she had never heard of anyone being allergic to skirts.
Having grown accustomed to her authority, Ma Xue still carried some weight as the class monitor. She threatened Yue Ran, “Yue Ran, if you don’t wear a skirt next time, I’m telling Teacher Wang!”
Oh please! Yue Ran thought. This little girl really thinks she can boss me around with empty threats. The classic elementary school tactic—”If you don’t do this, I’ll tell the teacher!”—was so overused it lacked any originality.
As if a 30-year-old mind would be intimidated by a little girl! Yue Ran shot back, “Go ahead and tell whoever you want. I’m allergic to skirts—if I break out in rashes, you’ll be responsible!”
Yue Ran’s sharp retort left the class monitor speechless. The little girl’s eyes welled up with tears—no student had ever dared to talk back to her so boldly before! The boys in class, smitten by the pretty monitor, always tried to impress her, while the girls all flocked around Ma Xue. Suddenly faced with a troublemaker like Yue Ran, the class monitor didn’t know how to react.
In the end, since the boys’ group was short one person, Yue Ran was assigned to join them, sparing her the embarrassment of wearing a dress.
The weekly test was over, and Yue Ran was confident she would rank first—the questions on the paper were ridiculously easy for her.
Sure enough, when the exam results were announced the following week, Yue Ran surpassed the class beauty and monitor to take first place in the class. The class beauty monitor finally couldn’t hold back her tears and burst into loud sobs. She absolutely couldn’t fathom how she’d not only lost her top position but also the bet to Yue Ran, who had always ranked at the bottom. How could she possibly accept this defeat?
Yue Ran thought to herself how overly dramatic the class beauty was—it’s just second place, was it really worth crying so bitterly over? Was she afraid people wouldn’t notice her distress? From now on, as long as Yue Ran remained in this class, second place would likely be the best achievement anyone else could hope for.
Yue Ran’s deskmate Cao Yu stared at her in shock, as if looking at some terrifying monster. Cao Yu knew better than anyone that Yue Ran couldn’t have cheated to get such high scores—after all, he sat right beside her and would have noticed if she’d copied from his paper. But how could someone’s grades improve so rapidly? Could Yue Ran’s tutoring really have made such a difference? Cao Yu couldn’t wrap his head around it—which was exactly as it should be. If a 30-year-old reborn adult couldn’t outperform these kids, Yue Ran might as well have stayed dead.
In her previous life, Yue Ran had been terrible at English and math in elementary school, with only average Chinese grades. It wasn’t until later when she encountered a good English teacher that her English improved significantly, though math remained a persistent weakness.
Cao Yu had already decided to thoroughly examine Yue Ran’s test papers once they were returned. When he got his own paper, he realized he’d lost points on two questions due to carelessness.
Using the excuse of checking answers, Cao Yu borrowed Yue Ran’s papers. First was the English exam—Yue Ran’s handwriting was remarkably neat, and she’d scored an impressive 99. The composition contained several words Cao Yu didn’t even recognize. After all, in her past life Yue Ran had passed the College English Test Band 6, though she’d deliberately avoided using too many advanced vocabulary words to avoid suspicion.
After class, the unhappy class beauty lay face down on her desk, surrounded by a crowd of concerned classmates. Many came to comfort her while subtly suggesting Yue Ran must have cheated to get first place. But who could she have copied from? Her deskmate Cao Yu had only ranked fourth—why would the top scorer copy from someone in fourth place?
Even from behind, Yue Ran could tell the class beauty was crying bitterly, her shoulders occasionally trembling with sobs.
Meanwhile, Cao Yu asked Yue Ran about the unfamiliar words on her English paper. After Yue Ran explained their meanings, Cao Yu checked them in a dictionary and confirmed they matched Yue Ran’s explanations—proving her score was indeed legitimate.
The class beauty resolved to reclaim her rightful first place next time. What she didn’t know was that as long as she shared a classroom with Yue Ran, that top spot would remain forever out of reach. Of course, she also hadn’t forgotten about the bet she’d lost to Yue Ran.
During the break, the class belle and monitor reluctantly walked over to Yue Ran’s seat. She saw Yue Ran and her deskmate Cao Yu huddled together discussing a math problem, with Yue Ran carefully explaining something while Cao Yu nodded occasionally.
Yue Ran and Cao Yu shared a desk, with Yue Ran sitting against the wall by the window and Cao Yu by the aisle. As Yue Ran focused on explaining the problem, neither noticed someone standing by their desk until they finished. Both looked up puzzled at the flustered class belle monitor standing there.
“Can I help you, Monitor?” Yue Ran asked.
Monitor Ma Xue looked at the smug Yue Ran and said reluctantly, “Yue Ran, a bet’s a bet. If you’ve forgotten, just forget it!”
Yue Ran suddenly remembered their previous wager and quickly replied, “I haven’t forgotten at all! I was just waiting to see if you’d honor it voluntarily.”
The class belle monitor pouted angrily, her face turning red with frustration. Yue Ran found her angry expression rather amusing.
“Just tell me what you want, Yue Ran,” the monitor demanded.
Yue Ran recalled how in her past life, she’d only received 5 yuan for Children’s Day snacks – substantial back then but still limited. Inspiration struck: “I want all your Children’s Day snacks.”
The 30-year-old mentally-aged Yue Ran never imagined she’d one day scheme to get snacks from a child.
Clearly surprised by this odd request, the monitor readily agreed since it wasn’t particularly burdensome.
Cao Yu beside Yue Ran found her food-loving nature endearing. Yue Ran thought to herself: These kids don’t realize how authentic and delicious snacks are nowadays – especially maltose candies, chicken leg bread, fried chicken cutlets, bear-shaped cookies, and cola-flavored instant noodles… But what if the monitor bought snacks she disliked? She needed to provide a shopping list.
Yue Ran immediately wrote out the list and passed it to a nearby classmate, gesturing toward the monitor’s back.
Back at her seat, the monitor felt a tap on her shoulder. Turning around, she saw the classmate behind her pointing at Yue Ran and then at a small note.
Taking the note, the monitor unfolded it to find Yue Ran’s neat handwriting listing an extensive variety of snacks: Want Want milk, Want Want jelly candies, etc. Most infuriating was the final line: “Buy exactly what I’ve listed – no mistakes.”
The monitor turned around and shot Yue Ran a fierce glare.
