- Chapter 14 - Removal of the Conditioning Terminal
Sario connected to Planet Joel’s planetary information network through the space station. It was a more advanced information network than Earth’s internet.
What he was looking for was a medical machine capable of removing the conditioning terminals located at the back of our necks. It seemed that rental medical machines were readily available in developed countries like this, and there was a service that lent them to visiting spacecraft for a fee.
However, the rental fee was pretty high. Upon investigation, the daily rental fee was about 1.5 million Krebits. Still, it was a necessary expense, so Sario applied for the rental in the end.
The medical machine was delivered to our small spacecraft the following day. Maintenance robots received it and installed it in the ship’s multipurpose space.
Seeing the medical machine, which resembled an oxygen capsule, made me worry if it truly was safe to use.
“There’s really no chance of it exploding in our faces, right?”
“Don’t worry. The Dwarf civilization level has reached ‘D’, so it’s pretty reliable.”
Sario was the first to try it out. After entering various information, he took off his upper clothing and entered the medical machine. Once the capsule door closed, the medical machine began its examination.
After the examination was complete, the surgery to remove the conditioning terminal embedded in the back of Sario’s neck began. Inside the medical machine, several robotic arms moved, cutting into Sario’s body, who was rendered asleep through anesthesia, to extract the terminal.
Once the surgery was successfully completed, Sario emerged from the medical machine. Since he had heard about the existence of this medical machine, he hadn’t mentioned the terminal’s removal as a wish to Zorofiene of the Celestial race.
“You’re up next, Zen.”
I also took off my upper clothing and entered the medical machine. After about fifteen minutes of examination, I quickly lost consciousness. It seemed I had been anesthetized. When I regained consciousness, the surgery was over, and I crawled out of the medical machine.
When I placed my hand on my neck, I felt something like a band-aid was applied. However, the bulge of the conditioning terminal was gone. I sighed in relief and looked over at Sario, who was intently examining the test results.
“Is something wrong?”
“It seems that the antibody immunity nanomachines and body adjustment nanomachines used by the Goblin tribe were quite low performance.”
Even though he said that, I didn’t quite grasp what exactly he meant by it.
“How low of a performance are we talking about?”
“If they aren’t replaced within three years, they might have a negative impact on your body.”
“That’s… not good. Can’t we exchange them for new ones here?”
“It seems that only those specifically for the Dwarf race are available on Joel. I think it would be better to exchange them in a civilization area where medical technology is more advanced.”
I felt anxious, but since Sario said so, I decided to trust him.
“Next, you need to obtain official Space Alliance citizenship, Zen.”
“Are there any inconveniences without official citizenship?”
According to Sario, without citizenship, one cannot create an interstellar financial account, which is certainly inconvenient. There are planets where accounts can be created without identification, but if left unattended, they tended to get confiscated.
Moreover, it seems that various licenses cannot be obtained either. For instance, one cannot acquire the second-class pilot’s license necessary to operate a small spacecraft without citizenship.
“So, how do I obtain citizenship?”
The method to obtain citizenship involves being formally employed by a corporate entity of a nation belonging to the Space Alliance and working properly for six months to receive provisional citizenship, after which one can take an exam to obtain full citizenship. There also seems to be a system where working for a certain period on a newly colonized planet or space colony that is recruiting new citizens allows one to obtain citizenship.
“Additionally, you can also gain citizenship if you register with the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild and hunt monsters on the Chirathea Star System.”
That planet seemed to be one where the biological weapons referred to as monsters are running rampant. There is a system where hunting monsters and improving one’s skills can lead to obtaining citizenship.
This is something the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild does to acquire excellent personnel and monster materials.
“Wait a minute. Is identification not required to join the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild?”
“You take a test to confirm your abilities, and if you pass, identification is not necessary. However, a guarantor is required.”
You won’t get issued a citizen’s ID through simply joining the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild, so one still cannot create an interstellar financial account.
“Since I was able to defeat Space Jellyfish, I should be fine. What do you think we should do first?”
“Let’s go to Chirathea.”
“Don’t you want to go to your home planet first, Sario?”
Sario sighed in response.
“I would like to, but it’s impossible to make a long-distance journey with this ship.”
It seems that to reach Sario’s home planet, one would need to travel 270 light-years. The small spacecraft will already require an overhaul after traveling 60 light-years.
The small spacecraft was designed and built for interplanetary operations, so it was practically impossible to use it for interstellar travel.
“That means we either need to acquire a proper interstellar spacecraft or buy a ticket from a travel agency. I wonder how many Krebits an interstellar spacecraft would cost.”
“If it’s a spacecraft equipped with a temporal jump field generator, even a used small one would cost several hundred billion Krebits, while a junker without a temporal jump field generator would cost several billion Krebits.”
“That’s a huge difference in price.”
“The temporal jump field generator is extremely expensive after all.”
I became curious about how much the temporal jump field generator brought onto this small spacecraft would cost. When I asked Sario, he estimated it would be around 600 billion Krebits if it could be repaired properly.
“It seems selling it might be a good idea.”
“That’s not allowed. We might never come across another temporal jump field generator again.”
Even if one has the money, it’s apparently uncertain whether or not one can purchase a temporal jump field generator. Therefore, Sario wanted to keep the option of selling it off as a last resort.
In the end, we decided to go to Chirathea. Before that, I thought I would register with the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild first. There was a branch of the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild inside the space station, and Sario said he had registered there.
And so, Sario and I went to the branch of the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild. When registering without identification, a guarantor is required, so Sario would be that guarantor.
The branch only had a robot and a bearded Dwarf sitting lazily in a chair at the reception. The robot was the one who assisted us.
“What can I help you with?”
“I would like to register as a Dragon Slayer Mercenary.”
“Do you have any identification to prove your identity?”
“I don’t have any, so Sario will be my guarantor.”
“Understood. We will now test whether you have the skills to join the Dragon Slayer Mercenaries. Do you have any preferred equipment or vessels?”
I had defeated monsters using powered armor and a space machine gun. Since my particle gun was still immature, I mentioned the powered armor and space machine gun, and they said they would check my abilities using a simulator.
I was guided to the simulator machine and boarded it. It resembled the simulator I trained on within the Goblin ship, but it was a more advanced model.
After defeating Space Clione and Space Jellyfish in the simulator, the reception robot approved my abilities.
“Now, please familiarize yourself with the rules of the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild. What learning method would you prefer?”
Being unfamiliar with the matter, I turned to Sario.
“Please use the information transfer-type nanomachines.”
“That will be 10,000 Krebits, please. Is this acceptable?”
After Sario agreed, the information transfer-type nanomachines containing the rules of the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild and general knowledge of the Space Alliance were injected into my body. Then, my head began to spin, but after about five minutes, it settled down, and I confirmed that I had memorized everything.
