- Chapter 15 - The Demon Realm Planet Volan
The Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild on the space station has two facilities. One is an administrative facility with a reception counter, and the other is a commercial facility resembling a supermarket.
Having received my new Dragon Slayer Mercenary card, I went shopping with Sario. I was craving a delicious meal.
“Is everything sold here edible?”
“No. The food items are categorized, and you have to choose from those that are edible to your species.”
It seems that Sario and I had some different dietary options. Of course, there are food items that we can both eat, but we still need to be careful in choosing.
I was familiar with my genetic classification code due to the rental medical machine. It seems that food items printed with that genetic classification code are safe for me to consume.
I went around the store, putting items that seemed edible into the cart. The most common items were food tubes with artificial flavors and scents. I wanted to taste test them first, but it seemed there was no such system in place.
When I looked for other preserved items, I found a wide variety of frozen foods. I proceeded to purchase a large quantity of them and arranged for them to be transported to the ship.
“Oh, right. We have no refrigerator.”
Since we had only been consuming food tubes until now, we hadn’t needed a refrigerator. Additionally, I also had to buy cooking utensils and appliances like a microwave, dishes, and spoons. Incidentally, chopsticks were not for sale.
After purchasing various living necessities, we returned to the small spacecraft. Then, we waited for the items we bought to arrive. Until they arrived, we had to rely on the food tubes, so I hoped they would arrive as soon as possible.
I wanted to eat at a restaurant on the space station, but there were no dining establishments inside.
When our purchased items arrived and we set up the refrigerator and other equipment, we finally managed to have a proper meal for the first time in a while.
“It certainly has flavor. But it’s been so long since I had proper food that I can’t tell if it’s good or not.”
In truth, the taste was rather subtle. I was a bit disappointed since my expectations had been pretty high.
Afterward, we finally decided to head out for Chirathea. Naturally, the discussion turned to what to do about the temporal jump field, but it seems that in developed areas such as this one, there is a device called a temporal jump field generator ring.
By paying a fee to use the temporal jump field generator ring, commonly referred to as the “jump ring,” which is installed at a position far from the system’s star, it generates a temporal jump field.
We headed to the jump ring in our small spacecraft. As we approached the donut-shaped structure that seemed to be about three kilometers in diameter, a transmission came through the comms.
“Will you be using the jump ring?”
When Sario replied “yes” through the communicator, we were instructed to transfer money to a specified account. Sario used his interstellar financial account to make the transfer.
“We have confirmed the deposit. Please accelerate to Varch 1 and proceed along the course that passes through the ring.”
Sario adjusted our course slightly and flew through the jump ring. Just as we were about to pass through, a temporal jump field was generated inside the donut-shaped structure.
Our small spacecraft transitioned into temporal jump space. I felt that familiar sensation of my insides twisting again. Apparently, I still wasn’t used to it.
” Sario, how much was the fee?”
“The fee for generating the temporal jump field was about three million Krebits.”
I let out a sigh.
Upon arriving at Chirathea, we got a gander of the system’s native star displayed on the 3D screen. It resembled the Solar System’s sun but seemed to have a slightly stronger reddish hue.
This star is also a yellow dwarf like the sun, and there are people living on the fifth planet. We arrived at that fifth planet in five days. The planet had blue oceans and green land, reminiscent of Earth. As we got closer to the planet, we spotted a massive structure.
“What’s that?”
When I asked, Sario glanced at the planet displayed on the 3D screen.
“That’s a space elevator. The part extending into space is a spaceport.”
The spaceport was about thirty kilometers in diameter. We approached the spaceport and communicated with the control room. The control room then sent us the docking points and flight routes, and we followed those instructions to get closer and dock.
We stored our clothes and equipment in a storage case and entered the Chirathean spaceport through the hatch. There, we underwent an inspection by the security personnel.
They checked for any harmful pathogens and inspected our luggage. The inspectors were androids, but they had cat ears.
It seemed that the creators of these androids were a cat-eared race. I asked Sario about the matter.
“This planet is managed by the Warcat race. Their civilization level is ‘D,’ but since they are subservient to the Aurebasian Celestials, we mustn’t get on their nerves.”
Some members of the Warcat race are subordinate to the Celestials and work for them. But it seems that they are entirely different from the deceased Berta and Liet, who were also Warcats.
The interior of the spaceport was basically weightless. Since they didn’t know what kind of races would visit, it seemed they had disabled artificial gravity. The air was composed of the standard air components said to be used by the Space Alliance. It was breathable for me as well.
We decided to descend to the surface using the space elevator. I was surprised that it cost two hundred fifty thousand Krebits per person, but it seemed this price was already considered cheap. We discussed our plans inside the elevator.
“If I hunt monsters here, I can obtain Space Alliance citizenship, right?”
“That’s right. However, you need to reach Dragon Slayer Mercenary Rank D first.”
“Huh? Is that how it goes?”
The Dragon Slayer Mercenaries have ranks, and if you just registered, you start at Rank G. I knew that defeating monsters would raise your rank in the order of G, F, E, D, C, B, A, S, but I didn’t know that one needed to reach Rank D to get granted Space Alliance citizenship.
“What level of monsters do you have to defeat to reach Rank D?”
“You need to be able to defeat Threat Level 3 monsters.”
Since Space Clione and Space Jellyfish have a threat level of 1, the path to Space Alliance citizenship still seems far away. However, Sario seems confident that I can quickly reach Rank D. It seems he is overestimating the “Higher Dimension Access Method” I received from Zorofiene.
“Are you going to hunt monsters too, Sario?”
“Of course not. I have neither Bosol sensitivity nor any other sort of special power. I plan to obtain a second-class pilot’s license instead.”
It seems that races without Bosol sensitivity or unique powers fight using armored suits equipped with weapons, like those used by mobile heavy soldiers, when hunting on the surface.
These armored suits are equipped with powerful weapons that amplify the user’s strength several times, allowing them to fight rather effectively with the built-in weapons.
“Then why don’t we buy one of those and aim for Rank D together?”
“Even the cheapest armored suits cost at least three hundred million Krebits.”
With our total assets slightly reduced to forty million Krebits, we couldn’t afford one at all. And so, it was decided that I would hunt monsters alone.
When the elevator arrived at the surface, we finally set foot on the Demon Realm Planet Volan. The base of the space elevator had developed into a bustling urban elevator district. In one corner of that area was the training center of the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild, and we headed straight for the registration counter after entering.
By registering for the training program at this counter, one would be able to use the accommodation facility called the “Guest Tower” provided by the Dragon Slayer Mercenary Guild, and would be lent an achievement collection badge as well.
The achievement collection badge is a round badge about five centimeters in diameter. It tallies all the monsters I defeat and has a function to report them as achievements.
At this counter, there were not only robots but also several female staff members from the Warcat race. It seems that some Dragon Slayer Mercenaries dislike dealing with robots. The person in charge was a female Warcat race staff member named Adelina. Her cat ears twitched adorably from time to time.
“These are the card keys for your Guest Tower room. Please make sure not to lose them.”
Adelina handed me two card keys. They were for a room on the second floor of the Guest Tower, located next to the space elevator. The reason for the two keys is that some people come with family, so it’s become customary to provide two.
As your rank increases, you will be able to use rooms on higher floors. This Guest Tower is enormous, equipped with rooms that can accommodate about ten thousand Dragon Slayer Mercenaries.
Upon entering the room, I found that it was about the size of eight tatami mats, with a toilet and shower. Salio decided to live with me to save on hotel costs.
The registration counter’s robot mentioned that there was a dining hall and a store similar to a supermarket in the Tower as well.
“By the way, don’t I need to buy equipment first?”
Thinking about hunting monsters on the surface, I somehow recalled fantasy novels and wondered if I needed to purchase armor or swords. No, perhaps I needed to prioritize buying guns instead.
