- Chapter 11 - Personal Maid: Just a Tale from the Past
I was born in a back alley of the royal capital, and I lived there with my mother. By the time I became self-aware, she had already passed away. I didn’t want to leave her body abandoned, so I secretly buried her in a large flower bed at some mansion, doing it in the dead of night. I don’t remember whose house it was.
After that, I had to survive alone in the alleys. The royal capital was huge, with many people and shops, so I was able to get by simply by scavenging through trash. But there were a lot of people living in the alleys, so there were constant fights over the scraps. To survive, I had to get stronger and faster. I even cut my hair short using shards of glass I found, so no one could grab it.
Some of the people in the alleys were utterly heartless. They would harm others, including those from the surface, just to make their own lives easier, or target the weaker ones in the alleys. I was born in a horrible place, but I made sure I didn’t let it turn me into someone like them. I drew a line, avoided copying their ways, and instead went after those who were rotten—stealing from them or attacking them.
I know the language is harsh, but there’s no better way to describe it.
One day, I saw two lowlifes grab a noblewoman walking alone in the street and drag her into the alley. As expected, they were after her ransom. I decided to help her, hoping to earn a reward from the noble family. I quickly attacked the back of one of the men, who was discussing how much money they could extort, and snapped his neck. I was planning to deal with the other man while he was still in shock—but before I could move, he collapsed. When I looked at him, bl00d was pouring from his neck, and he was already dead.
“You saved me. With my current abilities, dealing with two of them at once would have been too risky.”
“What did you do to this bastard?”
“I used wind magic to slice him.”
“Magic, huh. I don’t understand that. But whatever, I’ll take my reward.”
“A reward, huh… Do you have any family?”
“They’re gone.”
“I see. Well then, here’s what I’ll offer. Become my personal maid. I’ll guarantee your food and living expenses.”
“Are you serious? Normally, no one would make someone from the alleys a maid.”
“I’m serious. You’re strong, and you have potential.”
She extended her hand, waiting for a handshake. I reached out… but hesitated. Her hand was so beautiful, and I didn’t want to soil it with my dirty hands. But then, she grabbed my hand firmly. That’s when I knew—I was hooked. Not in a romantic way, though.
Becoming her maid wasn’t about doing menial tasks—it was about studying and training together. I only studied what I needed to, but I could never be as intelligent as she was.
The physical training, however, was intense. We pushed ourselves beyond the limit. With an elixir that could heal and even resurrect us right after death, we did things that were almost reckless. It was painful, but the progress was satisfying. I even found joy in sparring with Lady Lilia.
You might not believe it, but Lady Lilia is stronger than me. It’s hard to explain, but she uses techniques she must have read about in books. Those techniques were the basis for our training methods. As for me, since I don’t have magic, I didn’t undergo any magic training.
But honestly, being a maid is a wonderful life. I get to sleep in a soft, clean bed—far better than the cold, hard ground I used to sleep on. I can eat delicious food, savoring both its taste and texture, and I can cook whatever I want. I could never go back to stuffing my mouth with rotten food just to survive.
And I don’t have to worry about my hair being grabbed, so I was able to grow it long.
…Oh, right. The reason I grew my hair to waist-length was because I was copying Lady Lilia. Don’t tell her, though. It’s a little embarrassing. In exchange, I’ll keep quiet about the fact that you’re looking at her in a way you shouldn’t.
