For The Sake Of Your Smile - Chapter 11
“I hate to say it, but… it looks like Koji-san has reached his limit.”
Saying that, Suzuka took a scalpel in her hand.
It was at that moment.
“W-wait, Suzuka… can you leave it to me…?”
With his consciousness fading, Koji gathered his strength and spoke.
“Suzuka… could you get the katana…?”
Nodding, Suzuka picked up the blade from the shelf.
“What do you want to do with this…?”
“You can just watch from here… maybe sip on some wine… this kind of show is a once-in-a-lifetime event…”
Unable to grasp Koji’s intentions, Suzuka wore a confused expression.
“C-can you… free my hands…?”
“…Alright.”
Suzuka untied the ropes around his arms. Then, following his instructions, she placed a chair in front of Koji and sat down, holding a glass.
Seeing her like that, Koji weakly smiled and exhaled deeply.
“Please watch, Suzuka…”
Saying that, Koji swiftly drove the sword into his ribs.
“Gaaaahhhhh!”
Koji’s scream reverberated loudly in the room.
“Aaaaahhh!”
With bl00d-soaked hands, he gripped the sword and pressed forward with every ounce of his strength.
This pain is the punishment he deserves.
At least this is a small atonement for the countless lives he’s stolen through his selfishness.
As those thoughts filled his mind, he steeled himself, despite feeling his consciousness slipping away.
With one swift cut, he slashed his abdomen and pulled out the sword.
And then, in one swift motion, he plunged the sword deep into his solar plexus.
Suzuka’s eyes sparkled and her fist quivered with excitement.
“…I-I’ll do it… I’m doing it, Suzuka!”
“Yes, yes! Do it! Do it, Koji-san!”
“Uoooooohhh!”
With a shout, the sword was swung down in one swift motion, reaching his groin.
“…Guh… gah… urgh…”
The sound of clattering rang out as the katana fell to the floor.
Seppuku, the cross-cut strike.
Koji collapsed, bl00d spilling from his mouth.
“Did… did you like it, Suzuka? Was it… fun?”
Tears sparkled in Suzuka’s eyes.
“Yes, yes! Koji, I love you so much!”
A smile appeared on Koji’s face as he placed his hand inside his body.
He felt around his ribs, searching. Then, upon finding it, he pulled it out.
His heart.
“…This, this is… this is my love!”
His last cry.
And then. Eventually.
Koji hunched over, his body going limp.
Suzuka stood up and rushed over to Koji.
She caressed his cheek and took his heart in her hands.
—The heart was still beating.
Suzuka couldn’t hide her shock at his sudden actions. She was confused, wondering if a human could really do something like this.
However.
After a moment, she nodded in satisfaction and gazed at Koji.
“Koji, you’re still alive… I love you… more than anyone else in this world, I love you…”
She kissed the heart and smiled.
In his dying moments, Koji witnessed the last thing he would ever see.
It was the beautiful, beautiful smile of Suzuka, the one he loved.
Koji thought.
For the sake of your smile, I could die. I made that vow.
That vow has now been fulfilled.
I’m happy. Truly happy.
I am happy.
This. This.
This is it. This is my love.
Koji smiled blissfully and quietly passed away.
Silence took over the moment.
Koji’s corpse hung limp from the crucifix.
With a glass in hand, Suzuka smiled.
There was a trace of sorrow in her smile.
“Koji-san… the pebble has finally reached the bottom…”
She murmured this and continued to gaze at his corpse.
Until the morning light arrived.
At the break of dawn.
A woman emerged from Koji’s house.
The woman was Suzuka.
There was something in the delivery box. Opening it, she found a sample of Hazaki Soichiro’s latest work.
As she turned the pages, the following words appeared at the beginning.
——To my beloved Suzuka——
Closing the book, she slipped it into her bag.
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
“Goodbye, Sensei…”
She turned and glanced back after leaving the gate. Then…
“Thank you… for your love…”
Saying that, she quietly closed the gate and began walking.
She never looked back again.
A beautiful woman walked along the quiet, empty street.
Eventually, her figure disappeared into the morning mist.
