- Chapter 13 - "Just arrived? Come in! What are you standing there for? We're all friends here. Lucky you're only two minutes late instead of an hour..."
The supposedly unwelcoming team leader Hu Yigui, whom Lu Jiguang had mentioned, walked over enthusiastically and pulled Xu Mifei inside from the doorway.
Small scene, stay composed. After surviving a plane jump a few days ago, was she really going to be intimidated by this?
Xu Mifei wore a smile on her face. The seating arrangement here was too awkward, so instead of rushing to sit down, she politely greeted everyone present first.
Jiang Lingyu’s gaze lingered on Xu Mifei. When their eyes met, there was only a brief moment of contact with Xu Mifei’s smiling eyes before Jiang Lingyu’s gaze slowly drifted down to Xu Mifei’s abdomen and the hand hanging by her side.
The emotions hidden within were inscrutable.
Xu Mifei pretended not to notice anything. Honestly, she didn’t really want to sit next to Xu Wanzhi.
But if she sat between Lin Su and He Yanzhen, she’d be the filling in a sandwich. If she sat beside Xu Wanzhi, she’d be making Xu Wanzhi the filling between herself and Jiang Lingyu.
She chose the latter.
“Little Xu, come sit here! We saved you a spot!” Just as Xu Mifei was about to walk over, director Jin Chiyu, seated beside Lin Su, waved at her. He Yanzhen obligingly shifted to make room, and Hu Yigui guided her to the seat.
When she looked up, Jiang Lingyu was sitting directly across from her.
“Director, no need to be so formal. I’m here to learn—just call me Xiao Xu. Really sorry for being late; traffic was terrible.” Xu Mifei had no objections and simply went along with the arrangement.
Jin Chiyu was surprised Xu Mifei didn’t throw a tantrum. After a pause, she whispered, “I’m really sorry we didn’t seat you next to Lingyu…”
“It’s fine,” Xu Mifei said. “We can sit together at home. No need to fuss about it outside.”
Jin Chiyu smiled and proceeded with introductions. Most of them had crossed paths before. Lin Su and He Yanzhen, married for nearly twenty years, were the show’s resident guests, acting like the group’s parental figures.
The four additional guests were Jiang Lingyu, Xu Wanzhi, Wen Yue, and Shen Wansui. Wen Yue and Shen Wansui had just publicly announced their relationship three months ago and were still in the honeymoon phase, with a sizable fanbase shipping them.
When Jin Chiyu initially approached Jiang Lingyu and Xu Wanzhi, it was because of their strong shipping appeal. But soon after, news of Jiang Lingyu’s engagement to Xu Mifei flooded the media.
Now, the alpha lead hadn’t even been seated next to her omega fiancée, while said fiancée was about to appear on a newlywed reality show with her sister—
Hah. The sheer volume of drama was almost too much for Jin Chiyu to handle.
As Xu Mifei took her seat, the room filled with unspoken thoughts and a subtle silence.
Jin Chiyu: The awkwardness wasn’t in the trio—it was in her, the one who orchestrated this mess. She really was the worst!
Just as Xu Mifei was about to take a sip of tea, Xu Wanzhi, sitting diagonally across from her, smirked and said, “A-Fei, you must still be upset. Otherwise, why would you arrive so late? I already told you about this—it’s work we agreed on long ago.”
“Even if you’re unhappy, don’t do it like this. Are you trying to make me quit the show this way?” Xu Wanzhi said. “Do you know how terrified Mom, Dad, and I were when we saw the video of you jumping down…”
Seeing her like this, Xu Mifei couldn’t help but wonder why Xu Wanzhi’s pheromones had to be that sophisticated, steady wormwood scent. Couldn’t they just be top-tier green tea instead?
“I didn’t jump because of your work.” Xu Mifei couldn’t reveal the real reason, but the sight of Jiang Lingyu’s face made her falter for a moment.
“Really? If you’re not blaming me, then you must drink this toast, A-Fei.” Xu Wanzhi raised her glass. “You were late, so you should apologize to everyone. Let me accompany you, okay?”
Xu Mifei raised a brow slightly, glancing at the hot tea in her cup. Before she could move, Jiang Lingyu, who had been silent until now, spoke coolly: “She can’t drink.”
Even though Jiang Lingyu was seated across the entire table, the moment she spoke, Xu Mifei felt her ears tingle as if the words had been whispered right into them.
“It’s true, I can’t. I was bitten by a dog here, and the doctor said I have to avoid alcohol for a while.” Xu Mifei patted her abdomen apologetically. “Besides, Lingyu doesn’t like the smell of alcohol on me.”
Xu Wanzhi gritted her teeth at the mention of being bitten by a dog, gripping her wine glass tightly.
The atmosphere grew tense.
“No wonder Xiao Jiang always dislikes my pheromones,” Lin Su interjected with a laugh, breaking the tension before turning to Xu Mifei. “We were just talking about your jump from the flyer earlier. If it weren’t for Xiao Jiang explaining that you were testing equipment, Team Leader Hu would never have found such a promising talent like you.”
Suddenly, Xu Mifei’s mind cleared. Jiang Lingyu had already given her a perfect excuse for her reckless jump in front of everyone before she arrived, even helping her integrate smoothly into the props team.
“Exactly! Xiao Xu, do you know how amazing that video was? I thought you were just here for fun, but you really have skills!” Hu Yigui’s eyes shone with admiration. “It’s rare to see someone willing to improve like this. Keep it up. Our props team needs brave testers like you.”
Jin Chiyu asked, “The props team had already tried several interns before, but none of them could complete the first high-altitude parachute test smoothly. How did you manage to jump without hesitation?”
“Right! At first glance, I didn’t realize it was you, Xiao Xu. I even told my baby, ‘Does this person have a death wish, jumping so decisively…'” Wen Yue couldn’t help but praise Xu Mifei. “What were you thinking at that moment, Xiao Xu… I mean, Xiao Xu-zong?”
Jiang Lingyu’s lips pressed into a tight line.
Huh? It was just a coincidence, really. At the time, she had already felt utterly hopeless.
Xu Mifei inadvertently met Jiang Lingyu’s gaze—Jiang Lingyu was watching her. For a moment, Xu Mifei had the illusion that Jiang Lingyu seemed eager to hear her answer.
“Because, like everyone else, I take my work seriously.” Xu Mifei chose the safest possible answer. “Director Jin, is this the reason for today’s meeting?”
“Yes. Starting next episode, we’re launching a new series, filming on a remote island for four days per episode. The environment and tasks will be much harsher than before, and we’ll need close coordination with the props team. That’s why we’re informing you in advance—all seemingly dangerous activities will first be tested by the props safety team.”
Jin Chiyu turned serious. “During filming, please comply with any instructions from the props team. This is also to ensure your safety.”
The guests all fell into contemplation, but no one mentioned withdrawing.
Everyone wanted the show’s popularity, and contracts were signed episode by episode. If this episode was too demanding, they could simply opt out of the next one.
“Excuse me, I have a question.” Amid the silence, only Xu Mifei spoke up curiously. “Director Jin, what were the usual themes of your previous shows?”
“This?” Director Jin smiled sheepishly. “We specialize in newlywed wives coexisting in extreme environments, testing whether their love is devout enough to endure trials—like intimacy in confined spaces, novelty tests for wives, or life-and-death situations where the culprit turns out to be someone with higher compatibility…”
The two couples who left earlier had failed the novelty test, becoming infatuated with other guests’ wives due to the thrill of switching partners.
She hadn’t finished speaking when she suddenly faltered upon seeing Xu Mifei and mumbled, “Of course, these are just part of the actors’ work. And this time, we’ve revised the format to be more like an adventure survival show! I hope you won’t mind, President Xu. If you do—if you mind—”
“No need to worry. My wife is an excellent actress,” Xu Mifei said. “I understand. She’s very professional. I won’t interfere.”
Jin Chiyu exhaled in relief and seized the moment to raise her glass. “That’s fine! I believe everyone here trusts that their love can withstand the test. Cheers to all—we’re colleagues now.”
Wen Yue smiled and lifted her glass. “Exactly. We believe our love can endure any trial. We’re not afraid of your show’s challenges.”
“Cheers!” “Cheers!”
Everyone raised their glasses—except Xu Mifei, who held up a cup of tea. Across from her, Jiang Lingyu raised her glass in silent acknowledgment, their gazes meeting in the air.
Xu Mifei saw Jiang Lingyu’s lips part slightly, enunciating Director Jin’s words deliberately, “Believe our love can withstand the test.”
Soundless, yet crystal clear. Her tongue lightly pressed against her teeth, lingering only on Xu Mifei’s name.
Damp. Warm. As if whispered against her ear.
“Cheers, Xu Mifei.”
