The warmth from her toes was soothing.
The soft, white belly rose and fell with the woman’s light breathing, incredibly soft.
The heat flowed upward, and Nan Xue felt a peculiar sensation that was hard to describe.
Shu Yubai’s eyes were gentle as water, her black hair softly cascading over her shoulders. Her elegant red lips remained silent, holding a faint, almost imperceptible smile. She watched Nan Xue quietly with a clean, pure gaze.
Nan Xue’s cheeks warmed as she said, “Sister…”
Shu Yubai looked up, startled, and stared at her blankly.
How long had it been since Nan Xue called her that?
The soft feeling grew slowly, filling her heart. Shu Yubai felt a bit overwhelmed, as if she were unexpectedly cherished.
Nan Xue turned her head away in the blanket, somewhat unwilling to look at her. Her ears were flushed, and she tried to retract her feet, saying, “Don’t, or You catch a cold.”
“I’ll just sleep like this.”
Nan Xue stubbornly withdrew, feeling embarrassed. She didn’t look at Shu Yubai and turned to make the blanket even tighter.
The light in Shu Yubai’s eyes suddenly dimmed. She paused, stood up, and said, “Then… you should sleep.”
“I won’t disturb you.”
Shu Yubai sighed softly, and as she left, she lowered her head by Nan Xue’s bed and carefully adjusted the blanket. Nan Xue seemed to be startled, turning her gaze from the soft pillow to look at her.
The girl’s black hair was spread out, and her porcelain face had a rosy tint.
Her eyes were very dark, slightly moist, and glimmering with a cold light.
Shu Yubai blinked and touched her forehead with the back of her hand.
“Still a bit warm.”
“Is it?”
Nan Xue mumbled, “I feel a bit better.”
She had a fever, like a little hedgehog exposing its belly, soft and warm. Her eyes were filled with affection, her cherry-like lips slightly parted, and her cheeks seemed like flower petals.
Soft and slightly tempting.
“Let’s take another measurement.”
Shu Yubai’s heartbeat quickened slightly as she barely pulled her gaze away.
She picked up the thermometer from the bedside, removed the cap, and handed it to Nan Xue. Nan Xue was wearing a thin, loose cotton nightgown that hung loosely on her slender shoulders.
Shu Yubai touched her bare collarbone, making Nan Xue shiver from the coolness.
“Here, take your own temperature.”
Nan Xue placed the thermometer under her arm to measure her temperature. Shu Yubai wandered around the room, found the remote, turned on the heating, and went downstairs to get a hot water bottle from Aunt Zhang, charging it and placing it in the blanket.
Nan Xue’s skin was very white, her cheeks covered with a faint, light pink hue that seemed soft and warm.
Her eyes followed Shu Yubai around.
Wherever Shu Yubai went, Nan Xue watched.
After finishing, Shu Yubai sat by her bedside.
“What’s the temperature?”
Shu Yubai asked.
“36.9.”
Nan Xue checked and replied.
It had decreased a bit.
It was already night, and outside the window, there were distant, faint lights. The room was quiet with no sound, creating a peaceful atmosphere. A bedside lamp cast a dim light on Nan Xue’s eyes.
For a moment, Shu Yubai wanted to lean down and kiss her forehead or between her brows.
But the sudden departure years ago might still not be forgiven.
She was also unsure of Nan Xue’s feelings.
Shu Yubai sighed softly to herself, glanced at her, and said, “I’m leaving.”
Nan Xue looked at her without answering, seeming to want to say something. Shu Yubai had to lean down again and gently ask, “What’s wrong?”
“I want some throat lozenges.”
Nan Xue pointed to the desk in the distance and said, “They’re on the desk. Thank you.”
Can she eat mint candy?
Shu Yubai thought for a moment, but seeing Nan Xue’s eager eyes, she decided not to worry about whether it was appropriate and turned to get it.
— She just indulges people.
— She has no principles.
“Just one piece, okay?”
Shu Yubai took a throat lozenge from a small box, which had a faint, fresh scent.
“Okay.”
Nan Xue watched her quietly.
Shu Yubai: “?”
They stared at each other for a moment, speechless.
Realizing that Nan Xue was waiting for her to feed her, Shu Yubai felt a bit flustered, her cheeks slightly flushed. She unwrapped the aluminum foil with her fingertips and held the mint-flavored lozenge to Nan Xue’s lips.
Nan Xue’s tongue lightly brushed against it.
But it touched a bit of her index finger.
Warm, moist.
Shu Yubai felt a jolt, immediately standing up with her long lashes lowered, “I’m leaving.”
Nan Xue watched her leave quietly from under the covers.
The fever made her feel weak, as if her previous stubborn indifference had disappeared.
Her eyes remained open, the thick blanket covering her, her body covered in sweat. The heating was on, making it very warm. Perhaps because of the foot soak, she felt a bit fuzzy.
For a moment, she really wanted to say:
“Sister, I want to sleep with you. Is that okay?”
But others can’t read minds, and despite her gaze, Shu Yubai left.
As she turned to go, she gently closed Nan Xue’s room door. Going downstairs, the steps creaked with each step, and her fingers seemed to still have warmth. She lightly touched her side.
It was the index finger that had just touched her lips.
There was a slight tingle.
