A Moment Too Late (GL) - Chapter 59
“Senior sister, are you also participating in the competition?”
Shu Yubai asked her.
Outside the tall glass window, a snow-covered plain stretched out, giving off a cold feeling. A plane landed at the adjacent boarding gate, the black runway clean and slightly damp.
People hurried to board the plane.
“Yes.” You Fu placed her bag on the seat next to her, adjusted the hair at her temple with her little finger, and looked at Shu Yubai with a curved red lip: “We’re on the same flight.”
“What a coincidence.”
Shu Yubai couldn’t help but smile.
Going to the competition alone made her feel uneasy.
Although she wasn’t exactly alone, as she had a senior brother with her, he barely interacted with her, sitting quietly in the front, seemingly preoccupied.
Thankfully, You Fu was there too.
The two sat and chatted.
“How’s your preparation going?”
You Fu tilted her head to look at her, a wisp of curly hair falling onto her shoulder as she asked.
“I didn’t really prepare,” Shu Yubai shook her head slightly, smiling as she explained, “I’m just here to broaden my horizons.”
“That’s good.”
You Fu reached out and ruffled her hair.
Shu Yubai laughed and dodged.
Sitting next to her, Shu Yubai felt a sense of ease. Despite her senior sister’s laid-back personality, You Fu was much more experienced in many aspects, both professionally and socially.
“Did you have breakfast?”
You Fu looked at her, “There’s still some time before boarding. Let me get you something.”
Nan Xue sat there, her long legs crossed, with the breakfast she had just bought on her lap. The brown paper bag was still warm. She opened the bag with her pale finger, glanced at the breakfast inside, and then looked up casually to see the two people in front of her.
Shu Yubai and You Fu were chatting happily.
They talked for a long time.
You Fu reached out and put her arm around Shu Yubai’s shoulder, occasionally glancing at her. Shu Yubai seemed shy, her face slightly red, nodding repeatedly at whatever You Fu was saying.
Nan Xue felt a pang of jealousy, wondering why Shu Yubai had never shown her that expression.
You Fu glanced at the time, her white, slender arm resting on the back of the bench, looking relaxed. From behind, it looked like she was hugging Shu Yubai’s shoulder.
“There’s still half an hour left. I haven’t had breakfast either. Let’s get something together. I’ll go; you wait here,” You Fu said.
“No need, thank you, senior sister.”
“Aren’t you going to eat breakfast?” You Fu raised an eyebrow.
“Huh?”
Shu Yubai said, “I’m not hungry.”
You Fu stood up, ignoring her protests, and walked straight to a nearby shop.
Meanwhile, Nan Xue watched You Fu leave, her eyes cold and filled with hostility.
Was she also buying breakfast? For Shu Yubai?
Nan Xue stood up abruptly, her small bag slung over her shoulder, holding two paper bags in her hand. Her long, straight legs moved quickly as she hurried over.
“Sister.”
A soft, cool voice.
Who was calling her?
Shu Yubai vaguely heard a familiar voice, soft and gentle. For a moment, she thought she was hallucinating.
Following the sound, she saw a familiar figure, tall and slender, wearing a loose white sweater. Her legs were slender and beautiful, like a deer’s, as she walked quickly towards her.
Shu Yubai: “…”
She maintained a surprised expression, frozen in place.
She had the feeling that no matter where she went, Nan Xue would always appear in ways she couldn’t anticipate.
Nan Xue sat down, holding two paper bags, her head lowered, dark hair falling over her thin shoulders. She placed her small bag on the seat to her right, while Shu Yubai was on her left, her long legs stretched out, revealing delicate, pale ankles.
“Here.”
Nan Xue handed her a brown paper bag.
Shu Yubai: “What’s this?”
The paper bag was warm, emitting a faint aroma, indicating that it contained freshly heated food.
“Guess.”
Shu Yubai glanced at the logo on the bag and asked Nan Xue, “Did you buy breakfast?”
Nan Xue nodded.
Both had the same breakfast, and as Nan Xue opened her bag, the baked aroma filled the air.
“Have some.”
She said it naturally.
Shu Yubai held the breakfast, her slender fingers moved to open the bag, revealing a croissant and a cup of coffee, bought by Nan Xue.
Her heart warmed slightly as she turned to Nan Xue and smiled softly, “Thank you.”
“Sister, you’re welcome.”
Nan Xue rested her chin on her hand, watching her.
She said it so seriously that Shu Yubai couldn’t help but laugh. She picked up her phone and called You Fu.
It didn’t take long for the call to connect, Shu Yubai tilted her head, hair falling below her chest, and looking at the slender figure in the distance, she said, “Hello? Senior sister.”
You Fu was paying at the counter and instinctively looked back when she answered. The breakfast shop was not far from the boarding gate, just a few meters away, through a few passengers, she saw Nan Xue next to Shu Yubai.
An unexpected guest sitting in her place.
“…”
Not bad, indeed, Nan Xue followed Shu Yubai wherever she went.
“What’s up?”
You Fu, holding the phone, asked with a mix of exasperation and amusement.
“About the breakfast… there’s no need to buy it, sorry for the trouble, senior sister.” Shu Yubai’s voice was apologetic. She was very independent and always worried about inconveniencing others, even for something as simple as bringing breakfast.
She was used to it.
“Oh.” You Fu chuckled and asked, “Someone bought it for you already?”
Shu Yubai’s cheeks heated up, and she hummed in response.
It wasn’t hard to guess who had bought it.
That someone must be Nan Xue.
You Fu said, “It’s okay,” and ended the call.
Shu Yubai lowered her head, putting her phone into the side pocket of her small bag, a lock of soft hair falling down.
Nan Xue sat quietly beside her.
With this cover, Shu Yubai looked at her, thinking quietly, why was she here?
“Sister.”
Nan Xue leaned in closely, asking, “Were you just looking at me?”
In that instant, the faint light fell on her skin, illuminating her dark, long eyelashes, her eyes clear and bright, like the dazzling snow under sunlight, cold yet striking.
Her gaze was deep and focused.
Shu Yubai’s heart skipped a beat, and a flood of thoughts surged through her mind.
“No.”
Her heart pounding, Shu Yubai shook her head and asked, “Why are you here?”
She opened the bag casually as she spoke.
Previously, she hadn’t wanted Nan Xue to come, mainly because she was worried about wasting her time, with three days away from work. She feared Nan Xue couldn’t finish her tasks at the company. Other than that… she actually looked forward to having Nan Xue with her.
She just liked being with her, without any reason.
Nan Xue glanced at her: “Aren’t you happy that I’m here?”
Shu Yubai shook her head repeatedly: “No.”
“Of course, I’m here to accompany you for the competition, sister.”
Nan Xue boldly moved closer, affectionately linking her arm with Shu Yubai’s, resting her head on her shoulder.
Shu Yubai’s shoulder was warm, the soft, cream-colored cardigan emitted a gentle warmth and fragrance from her hair and body.
In the distance, You Fu was walking towards them.
Seeing their position, You Fu raised an eyebrow slightly.
At this time, the airport was noisy. Checking the time, boarding was imminent. Shu Yubai opened the paper bag and took a small bite of the croissant, the crisp sound filling the air.
She was careful not to drop crumbs on the floor, her long black hair cascading down to her waist, her red lips moist and warm, taking another gentle bite.
She looked down quietly, behaving very obediently.
Nan Xue watched her closely.
“What are you doing?”
Shu Yubai asked, her voice somewhat unclear.
“Watching you eat.”
Nan Xue replied.
She hadn’t eaten herself, quietly watching Shu Yubai, her eyes slightly bright, as if she was very satisfied.
Shu Yubai: “…”
“Why don’t you eat too?” she suggested.
“It’s time to go, we need to board.”
You Fu came over from that side and gently tapped Shu Yubai on the shoulder.
The time had come.
Shu Yubai hurriedly packed up the breakfast and picked up her bag.
At the boarding gate, a long line had formed. The crowd was in a hurry. Shu Yubai stood up, and Nan Xue stood beside her, her bag slung over her shoulder, lightly touching Shu Yubai’s hand with her pinky.
Shu Yubai turned around: “Hmm?”
The nasal tone of the word carried a hint of affection.
Taking advantage of her “long-time friend” status, Nan Xue moved closer, wrapping her arms around Shu Yubai’s waist from behind.
They were close together, the morning sunlight shining through the glass, highlighting Shu Yubai’s smooth shoulder and neck. Nan Xue gently lowered her head, her red lips brushing quietly against Shu Yubai’s skin.
A sudden tickling sensation.
Shu Yubai felt a tingle on the back of her neck, her body shivered, and she turned around.
