- Chapter 1 - Picking a Fight
Unit 099, are you certain you wish to relinquish all your duties within the Quick Transmigration Bureau and become an unregistered entity?
A clear, gentle voice echoed above her, rippling through the empty air.
It was Ning Xue’s first time stepping into the Bureau’s vast beyond imagination, steeped in a cold, desolate stillness. Even that pleasant voice seemed tinged with loneliness.
The floor shimmered with multicolored light, and a single beam from the domed ceiling illuminated the hall, scattering radiance like flowing water.
After staring too long, Ning Xue felt herself dissolving into that light, her lower body numb, almost unreal.
She knew this was just one of the Bureau’s illusions. So she looked straight ahead and said calmly, I’ve made up my mind. You don’t need to persuade me anymore. I’ve completed every mission faithfully over the years. Now I just want to retire early. Surely you have no objections.
She had been forced into these missions, back then because of her looks.
Originally, she was supposed to stay behind the scenes, uploading data, maintaining the servers that connected the small worlds. Just another quiet office worker, a salted fish content with minimal effort, waiting out her ten years before she could finally live in peace.
But one day, during a routine meeting, the Big Boss had “chosen” her and from then on, she’d been thrown from world to world, never knowing when or where she might die.
Every mission was dangerous beyond measure. For someone with no field experience, survival was a miracle each time.
And that went on for three hundred years.
Today marked exactly three centuries since she’d been selected. She’d long grown weary of living on the edge of death. Now all she wanted was a quiet world where she could grow old and enjoy her “retirement.”
The entity before her had no form yet filled the air. This was the very same Boss who’d chosen her long ago.
This was supposed to be a debriefing, but it felt more like a negotiation. Because someone like that… would never let her go easily.
“Very well,” the voice finally said. “If you’re that determined, I’ll let you go.”
Ning Xue blinked. Eh? That easy?
She’d spent days preparing for this confrontation mental rehearsals, emotional readiness and now she didn’t even get to use her speech?
“If you’re retiring,” the voice continued, “choose a world for yourself to settle in. I’ll even gift you a system as a bonus for your years of service.
For my years of being exploited, you mean.
Ning Xue pouted. Not even a single word of praise before sending her off? Every mission she took was completed beyond expectations! Losing an employee like her he should be secretly crying.
Some “Boss.” Petty, stingy, no sense of grandeur at all.
A low laugh echoed in the void, and Ning Xue froze.
Wait could she hear my thoughts?!
Surely the great Lord of the Bureau wouldn’t stoop that low… right?
A golden beam enveloped her. The white marks on her neck and wrists shimmered, then vanished.
In that instant, the invisible chains that had bound her for centuries melted away. For the first time in forever, she felt light free.
Finally!
She’d done it she was free from this cursed place!
But then, three glowing, fuzzy orbs floated into her mind, and the brief joy in her heart tightened again.
What now?
These systems are newly developed, the voice explained, almost soothing.
Once bound, they’ll obey you completely. No restrictions, no restraints. You have my word.
Ning Xue’s suspicion lingered. “Really?”
Old systems had claimed to “assist” her before only to spy on her, forcing her into impossible tasks. Even giving up was an ordeal.
These new ones looked harmless, but… maybe it was another trap.
After all, she’d always acted on impulse doing whatever pleased her, regardless of others’ consequences.
How heartbreaking, the voice sighed softly. “After all I’ve done for you, you still don’t trust me?
Ning Xue:
Maybe try doing something trustworthy first?
Ning Xue,” the voice continued, warmer now, almost gentle. “Don’t doubt me. I truly want you to be happy. The marks are gone. The systems can no longer control you.
She touched her neck, then her wrist smooth skin, no trace of the old sigils.
It was true. The marks were gone. She belonged to no one now.
She was simply herself.
“Choose one,” the voice said, closer this time almost whispering in her ear. “Whichever you pick, I’ll cut it free from the Bureau’s network. It will answer to you alone.”
The breath against her skin made her flinch.
“Why…” she began carefully, “are you suddenly being so kind to me?”
After three hundred years of torment, the sudden change was… suspicious.
Had guilt finally struck that old heart?
“What was that?”
The voice leaned closer so close it brushed her neck with a teasing breath. Shivering, Ning Xue quickly picked the one that looked most harmless.
The “Unearned Gains System.”
Just from the name, it sounded perfect for a professional slacker like her. Getting everything she wanted without lifting a finger, what could be better?
A soft laugh brushed her ear, and the light beneath her feet flared brightly, surrounding her.
“Good luck, my…”
The rest of the words were lost as darkness swallowed her. The world flipped, and she fell headlong into the time
space corridor.
High above the dome, particles of light condensed into a faint humanoid shape. It watched the vortex where Ning Xue had vanished, humming quietly.
The Bureau’s mark may be gone,” it murmured, “but my mark isn’t. Someday, I’ll carve it into you myself.
The light dimmed, and as the last glow faded, the figure followed the path she’d taken.
“My poor daughter, please don’t scare me like that! Mommy’s taking you to the hospital right now!”
The wailing pierced through Ning Xue’s returning consciousness. She tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt like they were weighed down with lead.
Stop crying already… you’re giving me a headache.
Something cold pressed over her eyes, easing the burning pain. She managed to open them a sliver.
“M-Mom…”
Her voice was hoarse and scratchy, barely human but the woman clutching her heard it immediately.
“Xiaoxue! You’re awake!”
Before the sentence was finished, the woman burst into tears again. Exhausted, Ning Xue squeezed her mother’s hand weakly.
“Don’t cry, Mom. I’m fine.”
Thank heaven you’re all right! Otherwise, I’d go fight that useless Fang Jianbo myself.
Ning Xue sighed. A bit dramatic, aren’t we?
The side effects of spatial transfer are nothing more. It will pass soon.
Her eyelids grew heavy again, and she drifted off. When she woke the next day and took in her surroundings, she realized her mother hadn’t been exaggerating at all.
A cramped, moldy two-room apartment. Damp air, peeling walls, the smell of mildew. Piles of cardboard and plastic bottles filled every corner barely enough space to walk.
On the couch lay a scruffy man, upside down with his legs over the backrest, face flushed from lack of circulation.
Her father, apparently.
“Did Dad go drinking again last night? Honestly, he’ll never learn!”
A door creaked open, and a boy in floral shorts and a gray tank top stepped out, barefoot, crushing bottles underfoot as he walked to the bathroom.
Her brother, apparently, is the one who skipped school to buy lottery tickets, starving himself to keep gambling.
This family… was there anyone normal here?
Suppressing a sigh, Ning Xue summoned her system.
A small, fluffy creature appeared round, soft, and utterly adorable. Just looking at it made her mood a little better.
Who could resist something so fluffy?
“I’ve reviewed the story,” she said. “Now it’s your turn to be useful.”
【Of course, Host! But before I can activate, you’ll need to earn the target’s affection first 】
Ning Xue: “…What?”
Would you like me to continue with the next part
“Finding Trouble”
You’re a system, aren’t you? Why do you even need to be activated?
In theory, yes. But without enough favorability points, I can’t provide you with any services.
You need to find the key to unlock the door before you can open it.
The little system was clearly proud of how poetic that sounded. Its fluffy white body trembled with excitement, and its fur spread out like a puff of cloud, forming golden words in midair.
Target: Jing Ling
Seventeen years old, currently a junior in Class Six of Yun City No. 1 High School.
Exceptionally intelligent, consistently ranking first in the grade.
Due to her past experiences, she’s emotionally distant, highly suspicious, and carries a cold, unapproachable aura.
Prefers solitude, has no friends.
Your task is very simple: earn the target’s favor. Each time favorability increases by ten points, something good will happen. When it reaches one hundred, your life in this world will undergo a complete transformation, achieving true “effortless gain.
“Simple?” Ning Xue raised an eyebrow, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
“You’re telling me it’s simple to win over someone with trust issues who doesn’t even have a single friend?”
The little system’s white fur quivered nervously, shrinking into a tiny ball.
But you’re the legendary Tasker 099 a gold-ranked veteran! This kind of mission should be nothing for you.
Before she could respond, it quickly uploaded Jing Ling’s detailed profile into her mind and darted away, its fluffy body vanishing like mist.
Ning Xue had no choice but to accept the data. Once she finished reading through it, her expression darkened even more.
Same school, same class and they hadn’t spoken a single word to each other in two years. In Jing Ling’s eyes, she was practically invisible. This was going to be far more difficult than she’d thought.
No wonder the boss let her “retire” so easily. Turns out, she’d just walked into another trap.
Damn it she’d been played again!
Suppressing her irritation, Ning Xue turned to wake the man whose face was now purple from sleeping upside down on the couch.
Dad, go to sleep in your room.
The man blinked groggily, his puffy eyes slowly focusing on her before he broke into a sloppy grin.
Ah, my sweet girl! Daddy bought you your favorite candy. Let me find it.
He wobbled to his feet, rummaged through his pocket, and proudly produced a small box of white peach-flavored fruit drops.
Daddy’s going to get a job today and buy my girl a pretty new dress.
Looking at the candy in her hand, Ning Xue felt a small pang in her chest.
Fang Jianbo might not be a good husband, but he’d always been a good father. After the car accident that left his leg crippled, his company found an excuse to fire him.
Life had gone downhill from there alcohol, depression, hopelessness but his love for his children never wavered.
She unwrapped one of the candies and popped it into her mouth, the crunch echoing softly.
“I’ll take the mission.”
The little furball trembled, and a golden progress bar appeared above its head the current progress: 0%.
Checking the time, she saw the bus would arrive in ten minutes. If she left now, she’d be right on time.
Fang Ningcheng, I’m heading out first. Move it.
“Brat! No manners at all!” her brother shouted from inside.
She ignored him, pulling the door open and froze.
Because right at that moment, the person stepping out of the neighboring apartment was Jing Ling.
Her heart skipped two beats, Jing Ling lives next door.
