- Episode 46: The Summons to the Saintess Identification Ceremony
Perhaps the Hatleston family, feeling the pressure from Gloria’s request, or perhaps the church, realizing they had failed to notice the situation at the academy, took action. One week after Gloria’s conversation with Abram, a “Summons to the Saintess Identification Ceremony” for Melody was prepared.
The Salisbury family, led by Baron Salisbury, does not own a townhouse in the capital.
For such students, the academy provides dormitories, and letters are delivered to the dorms rather than to their homes. Important documents from the royal castle or the church are sent both to the parents at the family estate and to the student at the dormitory.
For highly important documents, like the “Summons to the Saintess Identification Ceremony,” it is required that they be delivered in person.
Normally, the delivery would fall to Cedric, the second son of the church’s Count, but since he had caught a bad cold and was home resting, Gloria forcibly volunteered for the task.
Without such a pretext, she wouldn’t be able to approach Melody, as the crown prince, who disliked her, would chase her away if he saw her. He seemed to hate even the sight of her.
During lunch hour, Gloria stopped Melody in the hallway as she was heading to the cafeteria.
Even though it was right after class, Melody was already surrounded by the crown prince and Bryan, clinging to her like chicks to a mother hen.
Usually, Kate would be with them, making a group of four for lunch, but today, Kate was standing behind Gloria.
“I won’t be eating with you.”
The crown prince, who was the only one of higher rank than Gloria, responded with visible displeasure on Melody’s behalf.
“I have no business with His Highness.”
Gloria brushed off Edward’s attitude and, without hesitation, threw off her usual academy attire to reveal the robe she wore only on special occasions.
Naturally, Edward and Bryan were irritated by her attitude, and Gloria, presenting an envelope bearing the church’s symbol, spoke sharply as she addressed the hidden Melody behind the two.
“Melody von Salisbury, you claim to be the Saintess… no, you self-proclaim it. This is a summons from the church. After your afternoon classes, go directly to the royal capital’s church and undergo the Saintess Identification Ceremony.”
The students around them, who had been eavesdropping, held their breath at Gloria’s stern tone.
Due to the large crowd, Gloria had mistakenly said “self-proclaim” as “fraud,” but if she were the true Saintess, surely she would laugh and forgive such a small slip of the tongue from Gloria.
However, the other students, seeing Gloria in her Guide robe, seemed to take the words more seriously than intended. Many of them looked pale.
In an instant, Melody was subjected to the skeptical gazes of the students.
The crown prince, who had failed the Guide’s ordination ceremony, had reportedly been taught endlessly about the worth of Gloria, with her purple robe and amethyst pendant, and the connection to the church.
He understood the weight of those words and the fact that one of the girls he had been favoring was now being glared at by the church, which unsettled him.
As for Melody, she puffed out her cheeks and took a step forward from behind Edward. With a defiant gesture, she pointed her finger directly at Gloria.
